Empowering teams through participative leadership leads to increased team morale, acceptance, creativity, and retention. Studies have been conducted about including teams in organizational decisions and the effects on team performance. An overview of some of the various styles of leadership and the behaviors associated with them will be provided in this paper. However the focus will be on participative leadership and empowering teams. There is an entire business built upon providing executive coaching, team building and organizational development to organizations. Additionally, they help organizations with leadership development, culture change, conflict resolution and team building. But what is leadership? According to Merriam-Webster.com (2015) “leadership is the power or ability to lead other people.” While this definition is succinct, there is more to leadership than simply leading others. Leadership is building relationships and trust, as well as motivating and coaching others. The management functions such as planning, budgeting, evaluating and facilitating are a part of being a leader, however; those are not the characteristics or style of a leader. There are many different leadership theories and styles as proven by simply doing an internet search. The vast results include the following examples: directive leadership, transactional leadership, transformational leadership and participative (empowering) leadership.
