Love is a fragile emotion that can cause destruction when it is not handled with proper care and rationality. In the Shakespearean play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, a feud between two families, the Montagues and Capulets forbids star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, from falling in love. Despite the feud, the two lovers continue their forbidden relationship and with that choice, their love eventually leads to their downfall. The theme of passionate love among couples sometimes serves as a healthy aspect of relationships, but in Romeo and Juliet’s case, it brought out their worst traits. When Romeo was banished from Verona, he chose to grieve and express emotions of self-pity instead of taking action and acting like a sensible person. For advice on his situation, Romeo confided in Friar Lawrence to discuss his options. Since Friar served as an important influence in Romeo’s life, he made Romeo aware of how his actions were affecting him and his ability to think rationally. Friar explains this to Romeo by saying, “A pack of blessings light upon thy back;/ Happiness courts thee in her best array;/ But like a misbehaved and sullen wench,/ Thou put up thy fortune and thy love/ Take heed, take heed, for such die miserable,” (3.3. 141-145).
