I want to be a pediatric nurse. I absolutely adore children. I have been a preschool teacher for 4 years while I am continuing my education at Lonestar college to finish my prerequisite and get into nursing school. I desire to not only learn but achieve excellence. I go above and beyond what is required of me. I graduated from Lonestar College Cyfair with honors. I graduated cum laude and proud member of the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa honor society. I also graduated from Lonestar honors college. This is college allowed me to go beyond what I am capable of and set the standard for my academic excellence. Neither of my parents attended college, but my sister became a nurse and created a glass ceiling that I never thought I would be able to shatter. As I was pushed towards a nursing degree and told that it was “good enough” I failed and blundered through my first few years of college. I didn’t want to be a nurse and I knew that in my heart I wouldn’t be happy with the profession, so I took a break and became a nanny for a child with autism. I traveled the world with this little boy and after two years had passed I became more confident and ready to fight for my dreams.

Completing my bachelor’s degree in Nursing has been a personal goal of mine since I graduated with my associate’s degree in nursing. Having my BSN degree is essential for my career and personal development. Initially after graduating with my ASN, I enrolled in a BSN program and started my first class, when life happened. I was a single mother raising my 5 year old daughter, working the night shifts at Miami Children’s Hospital. I was dating my now husband and became pregnant with my second child. I ended up having to quit my job as a pediatric nurse which was my goal, to be a pediatric nurse, get my BSN and climb the ladder there. After the birth of my daughter my personal goals changed, and my academic and career goals were put on hold.

Since I was in the 10th grade, I knew I wanted to pursue my education at Mount Vernon Nazarene University for nursing. Furthermore, my first college visit on MVNYOU day confirmed my decision. I greatly treasure the close knit community and the Christian based morals. To get a head start on my journey, my sophomore year I applied and was accepted into the Career and Technology Education Center of Licking County for Clinical Care (C-TEC), a nursing based program. In the duration of my last two years of high school, instead of simply graduating with my diploma, I graduated with my STNA, CET, CPT, CPCT, and my CPhT. Let’s start off by saying I knew it. I have learned, I am meant to be in the health field. I scored very high in the health area of the career questionnaire. I made a choice in my high school years, to pursue a career in the medical field. In 2013 I became a Certified Nursing Assistant, then in 2015 I started to work at Pocola Health and Rehab, and I love every moment that I am there. Nonetheless, I want to become a Registered Nurse. During my questionnaire, I learned that it is a very well paying career. That’s important, but in my heart, it is very awarding to help people. I strive to do better, for me and my family and that is my goal.

I come from a small military family where neither of my parents graduated high school. My parents divorced when I was two and left my mother as the sole provider for three children. Over the next few years I experienced severe personal trauma that would change the course of my life. At the age of 15 I dropped out of school, left home, and began working to support myself. The highest level of education I completed at that time was the eighth grade. In my early twenties I became a single mother of two girls. Because of the financial struggles that I endured due to not continuing my education I clearly emphasized the importance of getting a college education to both of my children. One particular discussion that I was having at the dinner table where I was enforcing the “requirement” of college for my children; my youngest daughter questioned me in the most innocent way, “ Mommy? Why is it so important for us to go to college when you didn’t even finish high school?” at that moment my life

When I visit the Children’s Hospital, I see children who have hope. Barely every 30 seconds a child dies of malaria and so many children are suffering from different health problems. I would like to be there for these children and be part of the reason for them getting better in their health. My short term goal is gaining my Bachelor’s degree in nursing and my long term goal is becoming a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner someday. I know getting this degree will help me move a step further to reaching and fulfilling my goals. At the moment, I am taking some of the general education requirements and elective classes for the university I would like to transfer to. To be a nurse in general, I know there are so many requirements one has to undertake, but some of the most important ones are biology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and psychology. All these courses helps to prepare me more for the nursing program and career ahead of me. Biology is a prerequisite that helps in understanding many of the fundamental courses in health related courses and it is a required course for almost all sciences. After I graduate, I am trying to get into the RIBN Program through Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College and Western Carolina University. I know becoming a nurse is the right job for me because no matter what I am going through in life someone else’s life matters more than mine. I have an Associate Degree in nursing from Queensborough Community College. I had a Bachelor in Environmental Engineering already and I was looking for the fastest and most inexpensive way to become a nurse when I started the nursing program at Queensborough Community College. When I graduated from the nursing school, I thought that ADN would be enough to be a nurse and I could start working as soon as I got the license. Soon after passing the board, I started realized that it was very hard to find any job as a newly graduated nurse with ADN. I got pieces of advice from professors and decided to go to Molloy College to study Family Nurse Practitioner. After three courses there, even though it would be the fastest way to be an FNP with other Bachelor degree, I realized that I had no experience to share in as a nurse. I sat down and seriously thought about what I like to do.

My name is Alexis Leann Guthrie and I am 21 years old. Recently, I completed my associates of arts degree at Jones County Junior College. I am currently enrolled in my first semester of nursing school at the University of Southern Mississippi. As a transfer student, I have experienced many changes in this past month.
