PRINCIPLE A: COMPETENCE
Counselors, Pastoral care givers, and help givers should acquire the requisite education, which will equip them to practice the profession of their calling. Counselors should take on clients who fall within the area of their competence- areas in which they have acquired qualifying training techniques, experience and education; otherwise the case should be referred to other competent professionals. Counselors/helpers should seek to maintain competence by assessing and making use of current professional information, techniques, literature, administrative resources or other services and institutional facilities that can improve intervention efficiency and maximum comfort for help seekers.

PRINCIPLE C: RESPECT FOR RIGHTS AND DIGNITY
Pastoral Counselors should respect help-seeker’s self-determination, confidentiality, autonomy and privacy. Counselors should be cognizant of the diversities of culture, nationality, race, denomination, sex, gender, age and individual differences, socio- economic and language differences and make a conscious effort to avoid bias. Counselors do not put help seekers at a disadvantage on issues of aging, gender, sex, gender, race, religion, physical and mental limitations, degree of participation in parish life, and language- since people’s background on these things affect how the message of the Gospel is received and interpreted.

PRINCIPLE D: RESPONSIBILITY TO SELF
Pastoral Counselors shall be aware or their competence and offer services in their areas of training and expertise. Counselors shall refrain from undertaking any activity where his personal limitations are likely to result in professional services which may harm to the counselee. Counselors shall be aware of their own personality dynamics, which may bias his appraisal of the counselee in any way.
