According to Maslow’s hierarchy, the basic needs that the Patagonia culture meet is the Esteem because it allows the employees to be confident, self-esteem, allow them to achieve their goals by coaching its managers, and by training the managers to define expectations, communicate deadlines, and then let employees figure out the best way to meet those after being well trained. Also the respect of others, and respect by others is very important for an organization

2. Use the expectancy theory and/or the equity theory of motivation to explain how feeling underpaid might affect the work of a Patagonia associate and what a manager can do to increase the employee's motivation.

Expectancy theory proposes that an individual will decide to behave or act in a certain way because they are motivated to select a specific behavior over other behaviors due to what they expect the result of that selected behavior will be. And the equity theory attempts to explain relational satisfaction in terms of perceptions of fair/unfair distributions of resources within interpersonal relationships. It depends on each individual, some people want to have a job where they can get paid good not matter how the environment is and others would rather choose the environment in Patagonia, they have child care, food, and some time to spend at the beach whenever they feel exhausted. If an employee is there just for the money and does not care for all the benefits it provides then he or she is going to feel very demotivated and would not be as productive as someone that is there enjoying the benefits.
