Growing up in The Bronx has impacted my views, desires, and goals towards furthering my education in Speech & Language Pathology. Coming from this area, the population consists of many people that hold a low- socioeconomic status (SES). Experiencing on a daily basis the lack of resources provided to such urban areas has aided to my ambitions to find ways to provide to these types of low SES populations. I believe that one major outlet that many areas of low SES lack, is that of centers and/or professionals in Speech Pathology. This lack in the field conveys to my intentions in wanting to attend Howard University and become a Speech Pathologist. As a current teacher and overall someone who has paid close attention to the education system in my community, there is an absence of professionals who can help improve the living of many in such areas. Now I would not say that resources that pertain to aiding the development of people in mental health areas, or even language development are not available, however, there is a gap in the resources provided when you compare it to populations with higher economic backgrounds. Attending Howard will give me assess to resources, that will aid with all of the research necessary to work towards making an impact in the field of Speech therapy and that in the lives of many minorities. Once the degree is fulfilled, I want to implement myself into working in areas low SES, where there is a shortage of speech therapists. The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind serves as an educational resource for individuals who are deaf, blind, deaf-blind, and multi-disabled. I chose this agency because it has been mentioned in my communicative disorders classes. As a future speech language pathologist I want to learn about this agency and discover the programs it offers to help me with my future clients. The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind is relative to this course because as mentioned in the textbook and other course material, resources and programs that offer assistance to individuals with disabilities are essential to their successful futures. On Friday, March 31st I observed Northside Elementary School in the Brookville school district. I watched in a separate speech therapy classroom for students who also require special education. There was only one student who attended each session and the only professional in the classroom was the speech language pathologist, Miss. Haag.
It has been my goal since beginning in the field of social work to begin addressing some of the disparities surrounding mental health that exist within varying communities. It is common knowledge that communities with a high rates of poverty are not considered a priority when receiving the help that is needed when addressing the mind's health. This is evidenced by the state of the healthcare system that exists within this country. Though healthcare has seen drastic changes over the past few years under the Obama administration, there still remains a gap in care to people who need it.
There are many requirements that involve education and training, as well as personal requirements and aptitude. To be a Speech Language Pathologist, one must have a sincere interest in helping people, sensitivity, resourcefulness, and imagination. One must also be able to communicate orally and in writing. Michigan Works, an agency that assists with employment, posts jobs that display education and background requirements for obtaining a job as a Speech Language Pathologist. Some requirements include a master’s degree from a speech and hearing program certified by the ASHA, American Speech and Hearing Association, post-certification experience in an institutional setting. Home health experience is also desirable. One must graduate from high school and pass courses in biology, physics, social sciences, English, mathematics, public speaking, language, and psychology. In school, they are generally subjected to overcrowded facilities in areas with limited access to cultural institutions, libraries, afterschool programs and the like. In said facilities, a lack of dedicated and effective teachers and school leaders coupled with poorly-fitted curricula can only aid in widening the opportunity gap.

I found out that my uncle Danny had been diagnosed with lung cancer. The chemo originally worked and he went into remission. After a few months of remission, the doctors said he would have a few months to live. After he passed away, I couldn't talk to him. I couldn't see him anymore. He was just gone. Cancer ended the life of someone very precious to me and his death sparked the beginning of my desire to battle this disease.
