Growing up in The Bronx has impacted my views, desires, and goals towards furthering my education in Speech & Language Pathology. Coming from this area, the population consists of many people that hold a low- socioeconomic status (SES). Experiencing on a daily basis the lack of resources provided to such urban areas has aided to my ambitions to find ways to provide to these types of low SES populations. I believe that one major outlet that many areas of low SES lack, is that of centers and/or professionals in Speech Pathology. This lack in the field conveys to my intentions in wanting to attend Howard University and become a Speech Pathologist. As a current teacher and overall someone who has paid close attention to the education system in my community, there is an absence of professionals who can help improve the living of many in such areas. Now I would not say that resources that pertain to aiding the development of people in mental health areas, or even language development are not available, however, there is a gap in the resources provided when you compare it to populations with higher economic backgrounds. Attending Howard will give me assess to resources, that will aid with all of the research necessary to work towards making an impact in the field of Speech therapy and that in the lives of many minorities. Once the degree is fulfilled, I want to implement myself into working in areas low SES, where there is a shortage of speech therapists. I want to hopefully get involved with clinics or public schools where I can offer my services. As I go on attaining more practice within the field, I envision opening a center in such low SES areas specifically to the diversely growing bilingual
