There are many different pathways a registered nurse can follow. Education requirements are anywhere from a diploma to bachelor’s degree. Diploma programs last three years. Associate’s degree takes two maybe three years depending if one is a full time student. One can obtain an associate’s degree at a community college. Diploma programs and associate degree programs provide graduates with the knowledge for and entry-level nursing position. Nurses that only have a diploma or associates degree will later get their bachelor’s degree. A bachelor’s degree is a four to five year program and is offered at colleges and universities. Neonatal nurses like registered nurses are required to do clinical training during school. Neonatal nurses also have to do skill labs and intensive training. Neonatal nurses need a lot of clinical experience, mentorships, and preceptor programs. Training might take anywhere from six weeks to three month to complete depending on how much prior work experience. Before one becomes a neonatal nurse you should work as an advanced practice nurse (APRNs). APRNs can work as neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs) and neonatal clinical nurse specialists (CNSs).
