Patient safety and care should be the top priority of all healthcare provider’s agendas. Safe practices can play a significant role when hospitals, health care facilities and well-known medical centers can follow specific rules to protect their patients from injuries, infections, accidents and preventing errors.
Many hospitals aren’t good at keeping their patients safe, while others are trying to improve and implement their safety policies every single day. Many people die every year from mistakes and errors that could have been prevented in hospital practices in the United States. Hospitals must not overwork employees and should create a balance between staff and their patients so that some of the errors can be minimized from happening. Tired and overworked employees with a stressful job is a common reason that mistakes occur. I am a firm believer that performing daily quality checks of the patient safety guidelines can help resolve some of the errors from happening.
I attended a one-week, FEMA’s first responder class in a vacated Noble Army Hospital in Fort McClellan, Alabama. While I was there, the trainer told us about a pregnant woman named Charlotte and two other patients that received argon gas used in welding instead of pure oxygen. The tank was faintly labeled “Organ,” which can be mistaken for oxygen, and was administered mistakenly to Charlotte and two others in 1983. They were suffocated by this gas and died not long after, including the baby. It is rumored that employees can hear Charlotte walking along the OB department’s hallways. This is a clear example of health care, negligence that could have been prevented if the tank labels were updated accordingly and the worker had paid more attention when switching the
