Easy Drive Camping Destinations

Camping is a great recreation for the whole family and a wonderful way to spend a week or a weekend. There are plenty of great camping within an easy drive from where you live. These easy drive camping destinations offer many options for hikers and bikers, horseback riders and boaters. There are also many events throughout the camping season, so be sure to check those out while planning your trip.

PATOKA LAKE AREA
Patoka Lake is a popular camping destination and offers many activities for campers. Patoka is the second largest reservoirs in Indiana and with 8,800 acres it provides anglers and boaters a great place to play. The park is situated within Harrison Crawford State Forest, which provides plenty of trails for horse riding, hiking, biking, birdwatching and more for visitors. O’Bannon Woods and the surrounding area is well known for its caves and hiking trails but the park also offers many historical sites as well as an aquatic center to cool your heels after a day of hiking.
One historical site to note in the area is the first Indiana capital building located in Corydon. A territorial capital was located in Vincennes before moving in 1813. Also be sure to visit the nature center and pioneer farmstead while your there. O’Bannon Woods State Park offers 281 electric campsites, 47 horse riders campsites with provisions for horses. O’Bannon also has 25 primitive non-electric campsites as well as structures for group camps. There are many options to choose in the Lake Monroe area with boating, fishing and water skiing at the top of the list. While water sports may be at the top of the to do list for Lake Monroe visitors there is much more to do in the Lake Monroe area. Historical sites, hiking, museums, live entertainment and farmers markets abound around the lake and into nearby towns like Nashville and Bloomington Indiana. There is no shortage of things to do and see and there are plenty of campgrounds available as well as some wilderness camping in the Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area which is first up on our list of easy drive camping destinations for the Lake Monroe area.

Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area consists of nearly 13,000 acres of “Wilderness” a special designation that places it under the wilderness act of 1964. This wilderness area is managed to protect the area and provide solitude for its visitors. There is more than 35 miles of backpacking, hiking and horseback riding trails. There is camping in the Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area but many restrictions are in place to help preserve the land and natural beauty, so please check the forest service website for more information about camping before heading out.
