Patricia C. Wrede's Dealing With Dragons

In the article “In Defense of Princes Culture,” Crystal Liechty presents an argument detailing her opinion on why women should not be disappointed about children who like and idolize the princess culture. She expresses her dismay at a woman who changed the Princess story when reading it to the kindergarten to suit her values. Liechty believes that although she did not grow up believing in the Princess culture, she does not mind bringing up a daughter who believes in the culture. She also reckons that she would have enjoyed wearing the princesses’ dresses even though she had come to believe that it was a bad thing. Liechty believes that it is the best option that a parent can use to instill values to her daughter compared to other available options. Liechty points out that the princess culture presents a highly effective tool for instilling values to a girl child. Despite the essay being valid, there are some arguments presented in the essay that I do not agree with.

Source 2 says,”...the life of a Medieval princess was not detached from the turbulent political affairs of the time. Instead, more often than not, she actively participated in the politics and the affairs of the state.” This quote shows that princesses must be part of the political affairs of their kingdom. Princess Cimorene walks out on this important duty, and therefore the court has one person missing from the court. This could manipulate the outcome of anything the council does or votes on. Princesses in the Medieval times also had the job of giving charity. According to Source 2, ”One of the most important roles of a Medieval princess was dispensation of charity which was considered her participation in social life. For this, various social events could be held, or charity could simply be given to the poor on regular basis.” Charity was immensely helpful to kingdom life. Cimorene also abandoned this duty of hers. Since she did this, she has no participation in Linderwall’s social life, and the peasants in her kingdom might become famished because they can’t afford food. In addition, one of the reasons that cimorene is justified by going against medieval times’ social norms is because she simply wasn’t fulfilled with her life in “Linderwall.” According to the text Cimorene wants to take lessons which are not normal for a princess to take and she feels ,”It is of the utmost importance to my life and future happiness.” (p.4) This shows that Cimorene is not the average princess and she doesn’t want to live up to everyone’s expectations of her. This also illustrates that cimorene doesn’t enjoy being a medieval princess in medieval times. As shown above Cimorene wants fun an adventurous life with things to do, and doesn’t want to learn what every other does she wants to take lessons and enjoy her life while she’s young.

Considering that Cimorene was a satirical princess, most things weren’t fitting for her. For instance, her parents were insisting she marry a prince she did not know, love, or respect. In the novel on page 7, Cimorene said, 'I don’t want to marry prince Therandil.” This confirms that Cimorene was not a normal princess judging by her actions. Also this shows that she was justified for leaving Linderwall since that was her only option in getting out of the marriage..

For someone of Cimorene’s position her choice to become a dragon’s princess was abnormal and yet it was fitting for her. her choice was a fitting occupation when she left home to be a dragon's princess for someone of her position, and yet her non-traditional personality still takes effect in her every-day life but so does her normal princess behavior.“fencing is not proper behavior for a princess.” pg.3 this shows that she was fencing when she was not supposed and that she was not performing proper princess behavior.“the castle chef taught me, before my father made me stop.” pg.11 this shows that she was taught something secretly and that her father clearly did not want her to be learning things that were not princess like.

This shows that Cimorene wants freedom and fun. She is the type of princess who likes to explore, so living with dragons could be a change. This shows that Cimorene was not happy with the marriage getting set up for her. This is also important because Cimorene is not a proper princess, when her parents told her to get married of their choice she said NO. The book states, “ ‘I suppose there’s no help for it. You’ll have to run away.’ ‘Run away?’ Cimorene said.” (Wrede 11). This shows that Cimorene is going to run away. Then she leaves her kingdom behind. In the story “Dealing with Dragons,” Patricia Wrede tells the tale of an adventurous princess who runs away from her family. In this fictional story set in medieval times, she becomes a dragon’s princess and helps Kazul (Cimorenes Dragon) become king of the dragons. Cunegonde was a beautiful young woman, she was the daughter of the Baron, and is constantly being pursued by Candide throughout the whole story-which really is about him finding his way back to her the whole time. Cunegonde grew up in the Castle of Baron Thunder-Ten-Tronckh which was located in Westphalia. She grew up rich, getting all the nicer things in life, and didn’t have to worry about anything until one day, Candide got banished from the castle and that’s where it all started going downhill. Cunegonde was separated from Candide, her home got attacked, and her family was murdered. From there, Cunegonde is passed around through a couple of men: The Bulgarian, Captain Don Issachar, The Grand Inquisitor, Don Fernando, and others. Candide ends up feeling like she isn’t as beautiful after he gets her back in the end, and really just is not attracted to her like he used to be. In fact, in the end, there is a description of how ugly she really is while she is running to Candide after their time apart. There is also a line that says “in fact, Candide had no real wish to marry Cunegonde” (Voltaire 411) when in the beginning he talks about his love for her non-stop. But now that she’s been raped, abused, and used for whatever, he thinks she’s ugly and really doesn’t want to marry her but thinks that it is a good decision. At the same time, Cunegonde understands that she isn’t very powerful and doesn’t have a lot of options. So, if she wishes to survive, she must use her beauty to her advantage. Women in the 18th century didn’t have a lot of options if they wanted a “good” life after marriage. They married someone who could take care of them since they legally couldn’t have jobs.
