Many students always wonder why they have to take a history class. I myself have wondered this question many times, because history seems irrelevant to one’s education. In contrary, history is a vital subject to one’s education. It has been said numerous times that we take history so that we don’t repeat the same mistakes we have made in the past. Students retain different portions of information when learning something new. The recurring pattern that I have retained from sitting through numerous history classes, is the sense of patriotism. The American way of life has formed its own definition of patriotism from the Mayflower to 9/11 there has been a constant recurrence of patriotism.
American Patriotism originated in 1620 when pilgrims from England faced a rigorous voyage for freedom and prosperity. Their ability to conquer constant struggle and to overcome many obstacles that were thrown at them reminds me of patriotism. Even though they stood for something that was nothing they still persevered and fought for their freedom. If we flash forward 167 and the Americans finally created their own government with the Constitution of the United States of America. On this day foes became friends, strangers became saviors, and everyone stepped up to the plate. On this day America was rattled, however it was the perseverance and the American way of life that made this country stronger than ever before. It is truly remarkable when watching footage and hearing stories of the heroism that arose that day. Firefighters walking into buildings knowing that they most likely wouldn’t make it out. Coworkers that have never met before carrying one another out of the burning towers. Strangers and street walkers giving the clothes off of their backs to use as gauze and makeshift bandages.
