(Sequence) Even though you have the ideas in your head and believe that chance will help you, proving your point with facts, and organization on paper are you best advocates to have success in college. My Score: Sequence (31), Precision (25), Technical Reasoning (25), Confluence (26) As a critical reader, I will pre-read all the assignments that will be due for the chapter that I am reading. I will highlight key points in the text so that I can look for it at a glance, and find it quickly. I will read aloud to receive both visual jargons as well as auditory. I will re-read passages when in doubt. I use first precision and sometimes read into all the detail, but I need to use my confluence and look just at the big picture. As a critical writer, I will have to put my precision to the side. I can’t focus so much on all the details. I will use my confluence to look at the big picture. Moving forward, Seyler informs us of the traits for critical reader/thinker: focusing on the facts, being analytic, being open-minded, questioning/ being skeptical, being creative, and trying to be intellectually active. Seyler also writes that denotative is dictionary definition and connotation is based off of the context. Also, Seyler describes
Paul's Case is about a young, Calvinist man who did not feel that he belonged in his life. He lived on Cordelia Street in Pittsburgh, PA. Cordelia Street was littered with cookie cutter houses, suburbanite-like city-dwellers, and a general aura of despair. Paul's room was no different. Paul felt that his abusive father, uncaring teachers, and classmates who misunderstand him aren't worthy of his presence and company. One of the reasons Paul may not have fit in was because there is a chance that he was learning disabled.

The reader can understand so much better when reading between the lines. By reading between lines the reader can learn more about the characters in the story and understand them better. Also the setting in the story is more clear and easier to see. When taking a farther look into the story, the conflicts the character face make more sense. College students mostly get nervous about all the sudden work load that they face and may fail in many steps throughout their college life. They might end up needing help and professional advice on how to get good grades and survive their college. John Langan in “Three Keys to Doing Well in School” says (that) the three most important factors to a student’s success in college are attitude toward learning, good study skills and involvement with reading. Langan emphasizes on these three main points, sharing his opinion on how these keys are important and says that one should have much self-respect and determination to earn the reward by hard work rather than relying on luck. Furthermore, Writing and taking notes is another major key when it comes to enhancing study skills. Also, being organized and having a schedule setup for almost everything helps an individual to work on time and complete the assigned work ahead of time too. Reading is also an important step to better performance in school or college as it helps you think well, increases your vocabulary and helps you become a more successful person. These factors are some of the most important characteristics that a student should develop throughout his life to succeed in life as it helps build and strengthen the future of the student.
When it comes to critical thinking, reading and writing are two factors that deal with the critical thinking process. A few key aspects of critical reading and writing are identifying the tone in ones writing, how to throughly read and annotate a text, and the revision process. In the essay, “The Maker’s Eye”, Donald Murray explains how the attitude of a writer, listening to what readers have to say and how to edit your own writing makes your work better when critically thinking in college. These aspects of critical thinking, reading and writing make will keep the reader interested and make the writing easier to translate when read.

Gary Colombo, Robert Cullen, and Bonnie Lisle in their book “Rereading America” feel that commencing college is a very disturbing experience. So many things we have to deal while starting college, but the major challenges are expanded difficulty levels and higher expectation which we are not familiar over the years of high school. In order to solve this issue, we have to remodel ourselves by taking up the challenge and rethink about our strength and flaws. To succeed in college we need to be mentally strong and dedicated towards our goal.
To John, I would suggest he focus on his sequence and technical patterns. He needs to bring more clarity and step by step instructions to his correspondence. Using technical reasoning, he could convey his message with fewer words.
Teaching students to think while reading--critical reading--should be central to any discussion of thinking skills. This is in part because the reading of textbooks has such an important role in the content fields. Critical reading is defined as learning to assess, draw inferences and arrive at conclusions based on the evidence.
In conclusion, it is clear that being a good college student is not an easy task. It required good study habit, class attendance, time management and self-discipline. It is not easy but it worth the hard work. Because, as Jerome R. Breitenbach wrote, “the education you receive in college, and the attitude you develop, will guide you for the rest of your life. Your grades will be especially important in landing your first job, or when applying to graduate
Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading critically. “A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;” (Trimble, 95) In Trimble’s quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays.
Paul was a self-oriented boy, concerned with money, wealth, and glamour, raised in a Calvinist household that supported these ideals. Through my research I have decided that Paul's eventual fate was not any one person's fault. Paul was just as much to blame as his father and teachers for Paul's suicide.
It is the dream of everyone to join college with the hope of getting a better tomorrow and a foundation for them to make it in life. However, this may not be the case with some students as this dream may turn into a nightmare. This is because many students fail to go through or others even fail simply because they have not prepared enough; not just academically but also on the personal side.
There are several qualities to have to be successful in college. These qualities can range from attending class to going above and beyond what’s expected. Success comes from the journey taken or the path chosen. Success also comes from being prepared. As a student, I must step up to the challenge and find the path to success along the way. Several ways I define success is to uphold academic integrity, have the ability to prioritize, and to motivate myself to stay on top of what needs to be accomplished.
