The poem, “Gospel” by Philip Levine gives a vivid description of what the narrator sees around them. The narrator focuses their description on nature. They make many references to types of plants like lupine and thistles. Throughout the poem, nature can be seen as and abstract creature. Nature is
The phenomenon of consumerism is quiet powerful due to the impact on individual’s lives. Society has come to the point, happiness is associated with consumption. However, the way consumerism works, is if the items being purchased gives temporary happiness. There individuals are always buying the latest products to remain happy. In the text, “The Cult you’re in” Kalle Lasn, discusses a cult-like nature of consumer culture on Americans. Lasn uses the work ‘cult’ as a metaphor; he does not mean an actual cult but American consumers seem to be in a cult-like nature. The ideal example of Lasns argument is the text, “The man behind Abercrombie and Fitch”, Benoit Denizet-Lewis, goes in great depth of the life of the CEO, Mike Jeffries, of
In a life of poverty, illnesses surround its inhabitant. From poor nutrition to unfit living conditions come afflictions that range from a cough to polio. And as a society we preoccupy ourselves with the short comings of poverty. Creating a revolving door at hospitals treating the poor for their present illnesses, but paying no mind in preventing them for the future. In SAT," Ofri describes her experience as a doctor treating an impoverished unambitious young man, Nemesio Rios. Instead of just following up on Rios' routine check up, Ofri decides to prepare Rios for the SAT so that he could have a chance to go to college. In the book Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies, by Seth Holmes he mentioned the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre and his philosophy “Bad Faith”. Holmes explains “The phrase “bad faith” was introduced by Jean-Paul Sartre to describe the ways in which individuals knowingly deceive themselves to avoid acknowledging realities disturbing to them(Holmes86). The phrase explains us, when something bad is happening in our lives, we lie to ourselves to escape the truth that we don’t have to face them. This happens to everyone when we commit a really bad mistake and we don’t want to accept it. Another way this may happen is when you’re in a bad situation and you try to replace it with something else to get your mind off of it. Basically it’s a distraction, so we don’t think about what’s actually going on.
What is a Narrative? Narrative stories or essays can expand through a wide variety. Although a narrative is telling a story, it could be a person narrative or something they have experienced. attention for the LGBT community. These shows portrayed the guests as “jokes or sickos.” Even though these guests were exploited for profits, Gamson credits this genre of talk shows for making the LGBT people mainstream and more socially acceptable than any other time during the 20th century. Gamson says that “Very few people are willing to embrace the monster or freak label, even in order to humanize
At first glance and after reading through Amazing Grace, it seems that Jonathan Kozol is going to take us on a journey through the lives of the underprivileged, but similar to the ones you read about, or hear in the news. However, this is not the case; the real underlying theme seems to be how the life and society they live in is very alike to a life in a prison, not because it talks explicitly about prison conditions in this area, but also because their lives are portrayed as being a prison. Kozol uses the views of children and adults throughout this book to emphasize this theme through their living conditions and personal lives, background and struggles.
There are many components involved when analyzing a short story such as, main characters, point of view, plot, theme, and setting. Sometimes the answer is in black and white and other times it takes critical thinking to come up with a response. Some short stories have an important real life lesson while others are simply easy to relate to. Symbolism also plays a role in short stories by giving an event, object, or words being said a deeper meaning than the surface that brings importance to the story. “The Fat Girl” by Andre Dubus, “The Red Convertible” by Louise Erdrich, and “An Ounce of Cure” by Alice Munro are stories that contain most of the components of analyzing short stories.

Losing It by Emma Rathbone was far from a favorite of mine. While I loved the idea of telling the story of a 26 year old virgin who was insecure about her lack of sexual experience the story fell flat from everything I was expecting. Main character Julia decides to
This weekend I read a book titled, “When I’m feeling angry” by Trace Moroney to my 5 year-old cousin. This book does a great job in showing how feeling angry may look like, gives examples of what children might do when they feel upset and it gives different ways to express anger in a more desirable way. Through out the book, I stopped to ask my cousin a few questions to see if he was understanding and perhaps relating to how the character handles his anger. My cousin agreed with the character in the book that when he is angry he feels like a volcano wanting to explode. He added that sometimes when he gets really really anger he can get red like a volcano too. He told me he gets angry when his parents don’t let him do fun things or when his
Everyone has different values in life that work for them. When I think of the values that were held in the past, I think of the “Love Comes Softly” series by Janette Oke that was made also into a movie. The series is based on values of Christ, family, love,

Freedom Thinking Stedman Graham once said: “Freedom is about a way of thinking. Freedom is about understanding that you can do anything that you want and freedom is about being able to take information and education and make it relevant to your own growth every single day. Freedom is not staying in the box. Freedom is not doing what other people want you to do.” It’s safe to say that Frederick Douglass would agree with this statement, due to the accounts he lived. Douglass was born a slave in Maryland in 1818. He was an African-American social reformer who longed to be free. He planned to achieve this through education, through reading and writing. During these times many African-Americans were slaves. Most slaves had ruthless masters and were treated as commodities instead of people. Somedays the studying proved to hard due to the harsh treatments shown and felt by literate slaves. He even says that he wishes he could get rid of thinking (72), but thinking is the best course of action to become free. In Learning to read and write, we see all of this, we see how some views are changed, we see how some people live, we see how hard and tricky it was to be able to learn to read and write for an African-American slave, but he persevered, he had one goal: Freedom.
Paul Moses does a brilliant job of painting the picture he did in the book by synthesizing information and even elaborating on it like he did. He relied on the records of the times he was writing about this can be seen in the block quote above as this is
