The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is a short novel about a young Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who has a recurring dream about finding treasure in the pyramids in Egypt. Santiago acts upon this dream and embarks on a journey to the Pyramids to seek his treasure. During his journey, he meets a number of people and experiences many omens that teach him about his Personal Legend and leads him in the direction of fulfilling his Personal Legend. While caravaning through the dangerous Sahara desert, the boy crosses paths with The Alchemist, a very old and wise man who possesses the Master Work. The Alchemist accompanies Santiago on his journey the pyramids, and teaches Santiago about the Soul of the World and how he can should listen to his heart when pursuing his Personal Legend. At the outskirts of the oasis Santiago undergoes trials of the nearby tribal wars. One in particular is when he and the Alchemist were captured by Arab soldiers where Santiago must turn himself into the wind in three days. He already proved to the Alchemist and many others that he was capable of doing such things but he was not confident in himself that he could. He also had to face his fears or else he would never be able to fulfill his Personal Legend as the Alchemist tells him, “No one fails to suffer the consequences of everything under the sun.” The message that Coelho is trying to get across is that fear is one of our biggest obstacles--not only for Santiago, but for all of us. As humans, we can easily fall into fear’s trap for it prevents us from making choices and taking risks that get us close to fulfilling our Personal
