What you are about to read, is a short story about the world’s evilest company. Unfortunately (for dramatic effect), you will not find out who the company is until the end of the story, but do not worry, it will be worth your time. In 1901, the company produced the first artificial sweetener, saccharin, which was later sold to Coca Cola (Nill, 1988). This chemical would eventually, though temporarily, become banned in many countries due to its strong link to cancer (Hanzai, 2014). Moving ahead to the 1930’s, this company became the United States’ largest producer of polychlorinated biphenyl’s (PCB’s) (Nill, 1988). Today, PCB’s are widely recognized as one of the gravest chemical threats on the planet. The following decade, this company, assisted …show more content…
Well, you better believe it, because this is the reality of the society we are living in. Although many have argued that GMO’s pose “no adverse health effects” to humans, no long term scientific studies have ever been done on humans. On the other hand, in 1989, 37 Americans were killed and another 1500 disabled as a result of ingesting a genetically engineered form of the food supplement L-tryptophan (psrast, 2007). Similarly, 6 years later Monsanto’s genetically engineered hormone rGBH was approved by the FDA, even though multiple studies expressed rGBH-dairy would increase the production of the chemical hormone IGF-1 when ingested by humans by almost 1000% (Willhite, 2000). As a result, individuals have a 2 1/2 to 4 times higher chance of colorectal, breast and prostate cancer. (Food & Water Europe, 2007) Now, I could go on for pages upon pages about the negative health effects of GMO’s, but that would just be depressing. Instead, I would rather inform you that Monsanto has spent over 100 million dollars in preventing legislation and laws being passed that would force the company to label products that are genetically engineered. With that being said, not only do GMOs affect the health of humans, they also affect the …show more content…
Monsanto was being sued for allegedly knowing that dioxins were extremely toxic to humans, but creating Agent Orange anyway (Dillingham, 2009). Before the trial began, an individual working for Monsanto lobbied an individual working for the FDA and ultimately, the company was allowed to present their own research on whether dioxins were safe (Hanzai, 2014). Not surprisingly, Monsanto concluded that, “dioxins posed no direct threat to humans” and just like that, the case was thrown out (Hanzai, 2014). Today, there are more than 25 individuals who are associated with the toxic triangle that is Monsanto, the FDA and the government. For example, did you know the acting commissioner of the FDA, Michael A. Friedman, is also the Senior Vice President of Monsanto? Controversial connections like this have paved the way for laws such as H.R. 933 to be approved. H.R. 933 (the Monsanto Protection Act), signed in 2013 by Obama, prevents federal courts from being able to stop the sale or planting of genetically modified or genetically engineered (GE) seeds, no matter what health issues may arise concerning GMOs in the future Sheets, 2013). To further exacerbate this injustice, in June of 2015, bill H.R. 1599 (the DARK Act), was introduced. This bill prohibits the labelling of GMOs but also makes it unlawful for state or local governments to
Although GMO can be helpful, it also can be reportedly damaging in relation with health. In 1999, a scientist conducted an experiment; feeding some mice GMO foods, and some other mice non-GMO foods. The mice that were fed GMO products showed signs of precancerous cells while the other mice were completely healthy. (Science in the News). After the information was given to the public, the researcher was fired. The public went into a mass of chaos. People stretched the story, others changed it, but nonetheless GMOs had been
Are you wearing a cotton shirt? What if I told you that cotton is genetically modified? There are many products that have been genetically modified for over 20 years, but there are a group of people that have just started worrying about it now. The definition of a GMO is to genetically modifying an organism to improve on the genetics already in the organism. Despite what people think GMO’s are safe for humans to eat and don't cause any human health risks.
GMOs are awful for your well being, are very harmful to the environment and the animals that live in the wild, and they are harmful to the future of society. While some may say that GMOs are helping the earth by fixing world hunger this is not true, GMOs are doing more harm than good in our society. Imagine what will happen if we continue to eat these foods without knowing it, they will continue to harm our body and the earth in the future. The real question is, will there be a
The human body is not designed to handle all the toxins that are put into GMO products, and as consumers, we should be informed of the potential harm we are putting into our bodies. Helke Ferrie, in his article “Evidence Grows of Harmful Effects of GMOs on Human Health” states, “…all modern human diseases are being caused by environmental toxins of our own making” (12), on the contrary, in the journal “GMOs – A solution or a Problem”, Mark Lynas claims that “… there has never been a single sustained health concern [caused by GMOs]” (132). Ferrie mentions multiple studies where GMOs have proven to “…increase the incidence of cancer, diabetes, hormone disruption, neurological, immunological and other metabolic disorders” (12). After mass amounts of research have been conducted to prove the dangers of GMOs, proof that has been gathered of the detriments genetically modified organisms bring to the human liver; researchers conclude, “… anything that upsets the liver must be… exceedingly
1. Science and Technology for Development determined that the genetically engineered foods have nothing to offer the goals of reducing hunger and poverty, improving nutrition, health and rural livelihoods, and facilitating social and environmental sustainability 2. In reality, genetic engineering reduce yields, increase farmers' dependence on multinationals, reduce biodiversity, increase herbicide use, and take money away from more successful and appropriate farming methods. B. There is no monitoring of GMO-related illnesses and no long-term animal studies. Heavily invested biotech corporations are gambling with the health of our nation for their profit.
The American Academy Of Environmental Medicine have found out, Gmos also cause organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders. They also discovered the GMOs leave material behind that leads to long terms problems
Responsibletechnology.org states that the American Academy of Enviormental Medicine (AAEM) urges doctors to prescribe patients non-gmo diets. Through their studies on animals, it's been shown organ damage, immune system disorders, accelerated aging and infertility. Various health problems have increased after the introduction of GMOs in 1996 the amount of chronic illnesses in Americans have jumped from 9% to 13% in 9 years. I’m not stating that that the modification of organisms is the reason behind the increase of these health problems, but GMOs are greatly present in the unhealthy foods of America. It is also recorded by the American Public Health Association and the American Nurses Association belittle the use of genetically modified bovine growth hormone in milk, which is linked to
The companies that produce the GMOs are certain that they will improve the production of crops, but that is all they care about they have no idea how dangerous their product is to humans. The production of these genetic foods should be stop until they are proven safe to be consumed by humans without having any allergic reactions to them or any harm to our health. One bite of a food that contains a gene from a plant or any other food that a person might be allergic to could be fatal hazard and they might not even know what happens to them. Therefor there should be no more use of GMOs in
A strong reason as to why people should stop eating genetically modified foods is because they have never been tested. The people testing the foods are the same people as the everyday consumer buying a pack of Doritos® at 7-Eleven® without knowing what may happen. GMOs have unknown possibilities this means anything can happen to the consumer. A credible author writes, “Foreign genetic material in a host can cause other genetic material in that host to behave erratically. Genes can be suppressed or overexpressed, causing a wide variety of results. One consequence of overexpression, for example, can be cancer.” (care2.com) CANCER. Is food
GMO’s have so many myths behind them and though some of the rumors out there may be true others are not. A big rumor out there is that GMO’s cause cancer and allergies. As the world makes many strides in the medical fields we are noticing many diet related medical problems and of course they are blamed on GMO’s, but is this assumption fair? There is a possibility that because we are extracting genes from one organism and placing it in another there are risks involved causing toxins and allergens to be expressed. However the foods that are produced that are placed on the market go through extensive testing through the Federal Drug Administration and if they feel the product is too toxic for consumption it will not be placed on the market. Another
The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (“AAEM”) released a paper, citing that in addition to the adverse health effects of GMO foods on humans, there are also numerous animal studies showing adverse effects. Still the FDA and the GMA continue positing biological plausibility. For instance, Bashshur notes one study in particular:
Like many other companies that manufacture chemicals, Monsanto has been under strict public scrutiny on its effect on the environment. The processes involved in the manufacture of some of its products pose potential harm to the world’s natural resources (Hocking, 2016). This has triggered demonstrations by environmental activists in various locations that Monsanto operates in. Such controversy is not favorable for the company’s public image. Since the manufacturer concentrates on agricultural products that directly affect human life, the company faces various moral challenges on the effects of its products on the society. There have been incidents in the past whereby toxic chemical traces have been found in genetically modified food that was
In her online video, "Talking about food safety," Monsanto 's lead toxicologist, Shawna Lemke says that, "In recent years people have become increasingly interested in where their food comes from, and how it is produced....there is still conflicting and confusing information about Genetically Modified Foods, but because of the intense work the scientists that work here do, we all feel confident in feeding them to our kids." Monsanto is a Fortune 500 "sustainable agricultural" company that started in 1901, introducing their first product, saccharin. They move on to produce agricultural chemicals in 1945, and by 1982 they were genetically modifying plant cells (DNA). They now have 404 facilities in sixty-six countries, and supply 76% of the world 's seeds. It seems Monsanto has a stronghold on the world 's genetically modified seeds. Although Monsanto claims that genetically modified food is safe, there are conflicting studies claiming they are unsafe and cause harm to humans, plants and animals. However, there have not been any scientific research done concerning this in the United States. How would these studies affect our supply of genetically modified food here in The United States? What about the farmers? How does this stronghold affect the farmers here in the United States? The United States Government needs to perform their own scientific research studies to assess the health risks of Genetically Modified Food, and
A Genetically Modified Organism or GMO is an organism whose genome has been altered by the process of genetic engineering so that its DNA contains one or more genes not normally found within. These genetically modified organisms are a relatively new phenomenon in the United States, introduced in 1994. However, beginning in 2014 these chemicals could be found in 90% of corn, cotton, and soybeans produced in the United States. The looks and taste of genetically modified organisms may seem inviting but are the health risks really worth it? In my opinion, I believe that while genetically modified organisms do have positive feel and comfort they pose a large health risk to all who choose to consume them.
Much of the public concern surrounding the safety of GMOs stems from the process of actually creating them. This is admittedly not a natural process, which is a surefire way to raise critic’s eyebrows in doubting their safety. However, there is no evidence that supports these myths. The Committee on Genetically Engineered Crops, The National Academy of Science, and the Board on Agriculture and Natural Recourses all agree after extensive testing and observation that there is no additional harm in the consumption of GMO food. The research conducted in animal studies, as well as chemical analysis of the crops, show no indication that GMOs are negatively affecting human health. The next allegation hurled at GMOs is that they may have
