What you are about to read, is a short story about the world’s evilest company. Unfortunately (for dramatic effect), you will not find out who the company is until the end of the story, but do not worry, it will be worth your time. In 1901, the company produced the first artificial sweetener, saccharin, which was later sold to Coca Cola (Nill, 1988). This chemical would eventually, though temporarily, become banned in many countries due to its strong link to cancer (Hanzai, 2014). Moving ahead to the 1930’s, this company became the United States’ largest producer of polychlorinated biphenyl’s (PCB’s) (Nill, 1988). Today, PCB’s are widely recognized as one of the gravest chemical threats on the planet. The following decade, this company, assisted …show more content…

Well, you better believe it, because this is the reality of the society we are living in. Although many have argued that GMO’s pose “no adverse health effects” to humans, no long term scientific studies have ever been done on humans. On the other hand, in 1989, 37 Americans were killed and another 1500 disabled as a result of ingesting a genetically engineered form of the food supplement L-tryptophan (psrast, 2007). Similarly, 6 years later Monsanto’s genetically engineered hormone rGBH was approved by the FDA, even though multiple studies expressed rGBH-dairy would increase the production of the chemical hormone IGF-1 when ingested by humans by almost 1000% (Willhite, 2000). As a result, individuals have a 2 1/2 to 4 times higher chance of colorectal, breast and prostate cancer. (Food & Water Europe, 2007) Now, I could go on for pages upon pages about the negative health effects of GMO’s, but that would just be depressing. Instead, I would rather inform you that Monsanto has spent over 100 million dollars in preventing legislation and laws being passed that would force the company to label products that are genetically engineered. With that being said, not only do GMOs affect the health of humans, they also affect the …show more content…

Monsanto was being sued for allegedly knowing that dioxins were extremely toxic to humans, but creating Agent Orange anyway (Dillingham, 2009). Before the trial began, an individual working for Monsanto lobbied an individual working for the FDA and ultimately, the company was allowed to present their own research on whether dioxins were safe (Hanzai, 2014). Not surprisingly, Monsanto concluded that, “dioxins posed no direct threat to humans” and just like that, the case was thrown out (Hanzai, 2014). Today, there are more than 25 individuals who are associated with the toxic triangle that is Monsanto, the FDA and the government. For example, did you know the acting commissioner of the FDA, Michael A. Friedman, is also the Senior Vice President of Monsanto? Controversial connections like this have paved the way for laws such as H.R. 933 to be approved. H.R. 933 (the Monsanto Protection Act), signed in 2013 by Obama, prevents federal courts from being able to stop the sale or planting of genetically modified or genetically engineered (GE) seeds, no matter what health issues may arise concerning GMOs in the future Sheets, 2013). To further exacerbate this injustice, in June of 2015, bill H.R. 1599 (the DARK Act), was introduced. This bill prohibits the labelling of GMOs but also makes it unlawful for state or local governments to
