Freedom Summer was a nonviolent effort by civil rights activists to integrate Mississippi's segregated political system during 1964. It raised the consciousness of millions of people to the troubles of African-Americans and the need for change. Americans all around the country were shocked by the killing of civil rights workers and the brutality they witnessed on their televisions. For nearly a century, segregation had prevented most African-Americans in Mississippi from voting or holding public office. Segregated housing, schools, workplaces, and public accommodations denied black Mississippians access to political or economic power.

Would the beautiful state parks that we have today still exist if the Civilian Conservation Corps never happened? Well, that is up for debate, but nobody can argue that they didn’t do a lot of work. The Civilian Conservation Corps or CCC was launched twenty-nine days after Franklin Delano Roosevelt took office. The CCC members did anything from planting trees to building trails that you can see at state and national parks.

In the Summer of 1964, the Mississippi Summer Project, also known as Freedom Summer, was organized by several Civil Rights organizations such as the Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee and the Congress on Racial Equality. The event that caused the start of Freedom Summer were that many African-Americans were not registered to vote, this was because the southern states had implemented literacy tests that were unfair and could be interpreted differently, and Poll Taxes which were ridiculous amounts to pay ("Freedom Summer"). Other causes include the case of Plessy Vs. Ferguson, which stated the “Separate but Equal” clause, and also Racial segregation. Freedom Summer Volunteers included White Northerners, and the organization was made to focus on the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, Voter Registration, Freedom Schools, and Community Centers (“Timeline: Freedom Summer”). There was a need for the Freedom Summer because Many African-American People in the south were being oppressed by Literacy Tests and Poll Taxes.

The Peace Corps is organized into groups of volunteers and trainees that are placed in different developing countries according to their cause. The topic I chose was the Wounded Warriors Project. I chose this project because back in the fall, I was at a charity softball tournament for the Wounded Warriors Project. At this event, anyone who hit a ball over the fence raised $25 towards the charity. I myself hit a ball over the fence and raised money for the event which made me wonder, what exactly is the Wounded Warriors Project? It is important to the veterans of war and I would like to learn more about it.

I heard about Job Corps at a school presentation and thought, “this is what I want to do with my life.” Job Corps will not only benefit me in the short run, but also help me set myself up for the rest of my life. I have so many aspirations: I want to make a name for myself; to give back to the people who gave it all to me: the ones who left it all behind for me to be someone important in life; defy the stereotypes I grew up hearing, and make a difference in this world of ours. In the near future I have so much to accomplish for my own well being as well as to help other people. I want to be able to live my very own American Dream including: being able to buy my own house, one under my own name, as well as purchasing my dream car. I want to start and have a stable career for the rest of my life. Above all, I want to be able to give back to everyone who helped my dream become a reality. I want to give back to my state, so that way more young adults have the same opportunity I had and better themselves. Volunteer work is a task everyone has to take on, whether they are a high school student or a prisoner in jail. Mark Shrivers novel, A Good Man, displays a great understanding and representation of Marywood’s Core value of service. Marywood states service as “A commitment to promoting social responsibility which fosters community engagement to meet real needs.” Shriver demonstrates his use of service throughout the novel many times. The Peace Corps prints and videos are persuading the viewer with emotions. The prints have a more optimistic image, such as children smiling, playing and shows an encouraging quote. The images are colorful, informative and pleasant. However, it also shows their living or school environment and how vastly different it is from America’s environment. The two brief videos that Peace Corps made, shows how to be involved with their program and how the viewer can accomplish a worldly transformation. The videos state that the audience can create a difference and the lives they change, can change theirs. The intended audience for the prints and videos were young adults since a large group of the volunteers that were show, are young and some of the work is hard on the body. Additionally you may have to travel for long periods of time. Another audience the video is aimed for are older generations that can donate or volunteer however they can. The tone for the Peace Corps productions was hopeful and their view on the subject

I grew up in an environment where I was sensitive to the needs of those immediately around me; my family, my neighbors, my classmates but my world was a very narrow one. This course has taught be to look at the world as my neighbors and feel a responsibility to the health, safety and welfare of all. I used to believe there was nothing I could do about the famine in Africa or the genocide in Croatia but I now realize that ANY small step I take is a step toward a path leading to action and understanding. One of my closest friends is a Major in the U.S. Army and she has been to Croatia, Iraq and Afghanistan; I am blessed to have her in my life because through her eyes and her stories, I am more in touch with the trials of our modern day world. “Lao Tzu said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” (Loeb, 2010).
