Peace in the Middle-East: A Speech on the Israel-Palestine Conflict
Imagine a world where you were shot, your parents were arrested, and your home was spied on. This is the everyday life of Palestinian girl Ahed Tamimi. According to her father, she and her brother have been shot, her mother has been arrested five times, and he has been arrested nine times. Their house is under a demolition order. All of this due to one thing: Israeli oppression of Palestinian citizens. In reaction for Ahed’s family being maltreated, in December, she slapped a soldier- which was live streamed on Facebook by her mother. She bruised the soldier’s brow, and caused no further harm. She was swiftly arrested by the Israeli government and left with 12 charges. After

Now imagine this: You are a respected Israeli Military Medic. At one point, two Palestinian insurgents attack one of your colleagues with a knife, slightly cutting his hand. The rest of your brigade open fires, killing one of them, and merely injuring the other. Whilst the second one is bleeding openly, helpless and considered “neutralized”, you approach him and shoot him in the head. This is the case of Elor Azaria, who was charged with manslaughter. He was jailed for nine months. These two contrasting stories represent the sheer corruption of the Israeli court and apartheid-like system that tortures Palestine whilst keeping fair justice for Israeli citizens. This clearly defines the problem; Palestinian oppression by the Israeli government. For over 51 years, this oppression has continued with US support. Overall, the continued subjection of the Palestinians by the Israelis disrupts peace in the …show more content…
The conflict does affect us at home, and exposes parts of our own Nationalism. Although it has seen the US’s hypocrisy exposed, it also shows that the Two-State plan that calls for Israel and Palestine to exist side by side has been secretly opposed by the United States for a long while, that information not coming to light until recently with President Trump embracing a One-State plan as well. When, in 2011, the Palestinian president put in a request to the United Nations for membership, a step towards Palestine’s true goal of acquiring stateship, the US was very vocal about vetoing the decision if it managed to reach a decision in favour of Palestine. In the end, A majority vote was not reached, but Palestine was upgraded to a non-member observer state in a vote of 138-9, with the United States being one of the few along with Israel. Despite saying that it was a leading nation in facilitating peace between the two, and in 90’s actually being such, as soon as the Bush administration took over things fell apart. The Palestinian president, a violence-objecting, peace-willing man who was a frequent visitor to the White House, was labeled as a ‘terrorist’ by President Bush. Bush called for a new president, who was elected within a month. At this point, the administration’s machinations were revealed- the Palestinian support was nothing more
“Alright pal, you got me,” beamed Finny. Phineas, the only perfect person in the world (hyperbole), just admitted that I had beaten him at something. Once this realization hit me, a moment of pure joy sunk in, until it quickly passed and was followed by an overwhelming sense of disappointment. It wasn’t enough. Without further thought, I quickly flipped Finny, who was caught off guard by his euphoric state, over and pinned him to the ground (parallel structure). To my surprise, after the initial shock left his expression, he began to laugh. Finny had finally been beaten at something athletic, and all he could do was laugh.
What surprised me most was that the information that I had learned was the complete opposite of the truth. Palestine has went through so much trauma and suffering because of Israel. They hardly ever have enough to live off of. Israel doesn’t want people fighting against their laws, they only want Palestine to do what they want. Israel has taken so much from Palestine, and they will suffer until someone stands up and breaks the chains on Palestine. Our two countries, the US and Israel have some values that are similar. We both love to be with family on holidays. We all help each other in times of need, and we all strive to have a better future for our children. Give them the life they deserve to have.
Fueled by the prospect of becoming heroes and lacking the maturity to understand the dangers they are seeing, young Palestinians are easily provoked to enter into harms way. The children on the front lines of this uprising are not accidental. The Palestinian Authority (PA) has intentionally provoked children to drop their toys and pick up stones against the occupying forces of Israel. A number of Palestinian teenagers, some as young as 13 and 14 have gone on suicide missions because the societal conditioning has deceived children into believing that combat and a heroic Death for Allah are expected of them. The subject matter of the PA national curriculum and state-owned media coach the children into armed conflict. The objective; to irrevocably plant seeds of hatred into entire generations. The children are almost conditioned to take up collective behavior that conforms to violent ideological social movements. For many in the Palestinian society the one goal in life is death. The PA leadership consistently accuses Israel of violating human rights for the killing of innocent children while they are fully responsible for placing the children in the heat of the battle. This is a cynical attempt to undermine human rights tensions.
The book “Three Wishes: Palestinian and Israeli Children Speak” by Deborah Ellis offered incredible insight into the lives of the children involved in the Arab-Israeli conflict. Unfortunately, I found many of the facts – and many of the viewpoints expressed by these children – incredibly upsetting. After reading about the treatment of Palestinians by the Israeli army, I was angered by the lack of action from the international community concerning the complete disregard of children’s basic human rights. Additionally, the world refuses to condemn the Israeli oppression of Palestinians out of fear of coming across as anti-Semitic. Peace cannot be achieved if the world continues to abstain from acting and children of both sides grow up believing that peace is impossible.
“Since the beginning of October, according to the Red Crescent Society, 44 Palestinians, including those engaged in militant activities, have been shot dead in Israel and the West Bank, 17 of whom have been killed during demonstrations and riots. Since the escalation of Rosh Hashana on September 15th, there have been more than 1,100 attacks, 8 Israelis were killed and 188 were wounded, most of which are civilians, by Palestinian assailants.” Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Kidra said, “Israeli strikes raised the death toll there to 135, with more than 920 wounded, and the new round of airstrikes raised the death toll to at least 342 Palestinians, many of them civilians.” The consequences because of the cruelty of others, it has lead to many more deaths, injuries, and loss. Just like The Jews of medieval Europe came to be subjected to periodic libels, attacks, and expulsions.
September 5th, 1972 is a day that will forever live in infamy for the Israelis. During the 1972 Summer Olympics, located in Munich, Germany, eight Palestinian terrorists killed two Israeli olympians, and held nine others hostage. Ultimately, after much deliberation and poor planning and execution of rescue operations and intervention procedures by German officials, all hostages were found dead along with five of the eight terrorists. On the opposite end, this day will for live in glory and triumph for the Palestinians and their supporters. This day made the struggles of the Palestinian people known. Many of them, after hearing the news, cheered for their fellow Palestinians. The Palestinian legacy of the Black September attacks is that they
This wall is made of iron. This wall is impenetrable. If Israeli soldiers are ready to kill a young girl that possesses no credible immediate threat, and if that incites no considerable credible opposition against Israel from outside the Arab world, how are the rest of the Palestinians supposed to have any hope of resisting Israel? Therefore, this and other acts like this may not simply be overreactions, or perhaps motivated by racism. In the spirit of “The Iron Wall”, these acts serve to demonstrate to the Palestinians that they have lost the war and it is time for them to surrender.
The psychological long-term effects of political violence on children are severe and extremely traumatizing. Also proven by www.healingdivides.org, many more children have developed psychological impairments than physical disabilities. In a recent study, it was found that 50% of injured children have developed post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition, around 34% of Palestinian school-going children have developed the sam disorder. In another study based on 1000 school aged Palestinian children by www.healingdivides.org, 547 children reported that they have experienced at least one largely traumatic event during their life. The most common events were of political traumas by the Israeli Army. Next, among 270 children who had experienced political traumas by the Israeli Army; 125 were injured, 96 had a family member killed, 45 had been imprisoned/beaten up and four had their houses destroyed. The remaining 341 children of the 527 had been diagnosed as having full post-traumatic stress. This study displays how the Israeli Army is having a huge impact on the children and their lives. It is hurting them in ways which are unimaginable. Moving on, it has been confirmed from www.healingdivides.com, that girls between the ages 5-14 are most vulnerable. This is because they are experiencing more hormones and tend to get more emotional, causing more impact mentally on their brain. Among the youngest children, the most common signs of distress are crying and clinging to their parents. According to www.healingdivides.org, children of ages 6-12 experience more of aggression and rebellion as signs of fear and anxiety. Lastly ages 13-18 are most likely to suffer from risk behaviour, feeling of helplessness, frustration and withdrawal. More than 500 children had experienced horrible heart-breaking events which will stay in their minds forever. Even though many have been injured, more have been mentally maimed which in
Palestinians have slaughtered at least 34 Israelis — stabbing them to death in stores, in synagogues, in their apartments and on the street, and ramming them to death with their cars. Daring to step out onto the street almost anywhere in Israel has become a game of Russian roulette these
It is from this “police force” that many of the human rights violations committed historically and presently in the Arab-Israeli conflict are coming into the light and
Bob Hawke once said; “Unless and until something concrete is done about addressing the Israeli-Palestinian issue you won't get a real start on the war against terrorism.” Perhaps Hawke put into a few simple words one of the most complicated issues within our world today, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As Israel continues to strip the Palestinians of their land and fears it’s very existence because of the Palestinians terrorist acts, there seems to be no solution in sight. The world appears to be split and all over the place when it comes to this matter. According to The Middle East Institute for Understanding approximately 129 countries recognize Palestine as a state while many others do not. Over all the political matters within this issue not only affect Palestine and Israel but the world as a whole, as the Middle East and the West seem to disagree. This has had and will continue to have an enormous impact on many political affairs all over the world particularly in the current fight against terrorism. Personally I feel that the Israeli Palestinian conflict while being a very complicated matter has a simple solution. Within this issue I am a firm believer that the occupation of the West Bank by Israeli forces is extremely unjust and must come to an end. Once this is achieved a two state solution will be the most effective way to bring peace to the area. The occupation of the West Bank violates political and legal rights, human rights, and illegally forces Palestinians
The conflict between Israel and Palestine is just one of the many facets that have shaped modern day politics in the Middle East. It is a conflict rooted in generations of violence, discrimination and prejudice that is complicated by a history older than any of the modern day superpowers. Ever since the creation of the state of Israel by the 1947 UN partition of Palestine
There 's a lot of violence going on in the West Bank. There are thousands of Palestinians in the streets now that there have seen so many acts of violence. The recent reporting’s feature single independent attacks from young Palestinian men. In the past, there have been more collective acts of violence, but now a day there are single independent person 's. Due to these actions of violence, the citizens have continued to riot. This has probed police interaction with the protesting rioters and again more violence. A Political solution that many experts believe is needed in order to correctly combat this issue there have been many
Gaith (2014) describes an incident where israeli soldier take children as young as 11 into custody and do many bodily harm to them in the process. The way children are treated goes against the promise that Israel made to protect children rights. “Violence against palestinian children detainees on rise” (2015) states that in the first 6 months of 2015 there was 10 percent increase of violence against palestinian children in israeli custody. They also say that children are forced to sign papers in hebrew a language they don’t understand stating that they weren’t abused and that it was only an interrogation. According to these statistics, “I’ll treatment of Palestinian children remains widespread and systematic in the Israeli military detention
The Israeli-Palestinian issue has been an ongoing conflict since 1917. This conflict started right after the Holocaust as a huge number of Jews fled to Palestine. Later on, the Israeli forces almost occupied the whole land over the years. Currently, the Palestinians own about 11-15% of the land, while Israelis own the rest of the land (Farah 40). As of today, there are about five million Palestinian refugees in foreign camps and they are unable to return (Farah 40). Not only the Israeli forces occupied the land and forcibly evicted millions of Palestinians, they also operate a two-tiered system in the country that gives better treatment to Israelis while imposing harsh conditions on Palestinians. For example, Israeli civilians are allowed to
