The idea that peaceful resistance can positively or negatively impact a free society is a topic that requires much thought. Our basic freedoms in this country allow us the right to peacefully protest an injustice that has been done and permitted. One can stage arguments that favor both points of view. The difficulty comes in questioning which laws are debatable and which are not. Do we peacefully resist to laws that protect life or do we resist to laws that seem unpalatable to us personally? I believe we, as Americans, need to be very clear on where to draw the lines. The laws that our nation has adopted are extremely important to the functioning and growth of a proper and stable society. Since religion was outlawed and deemed illegal to practice, my grandfather was kicked out of medical school and sent to live in a concentration camp/gulag for 18 months because he was a Christian. Anyone would think that had he been a detriment to society and a danger to individuals, he should be detained. His basic freedoms to believe in God were strangled and the Cuban government, for a time, decided to imprison certain youths and adult men in order to "re-train their thinking" and adopt the communist thinking in a force-able way. The laws had been changed under the Castro dictatorship to suit his preferences and there was no regard for the welfare of humanity.
