There are two major events that have occurred within the past seventy-five years within the United States. Those two events are the attack by the Empire of Japan at Pearl Harbor and the September 11th terrorist attack. The Address to the Nation after each event states significant parts of the event and background of the attacks. The Address to the Nation after each event contains logos, ethos, pathos, and literary elements.
On December 7th, 1941 “the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” Many were killed in the attack and some of our naval fleet sunk because of the torpedo’s. On September 11th, 2001 a deadly terrorist attack occurred causing the fall of the twin

Logos is a literary device that can be defined as a statement, sentence or argument used to convince or persuade the targeted audience. An example from Franklin Roosevelt’s Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation “Yesterday, December 7th, 1941- - a date which will live in infamy- - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” When Roosevelt says this he is saying that he believes the logical thing to do is to go to war with Japan. Another example from George Bush’s 9/11 Address to the Nation is “America was targeted for attack because we’re the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world.” Bush believes this is logical because America is known for its freedom and opportunities which becomes a target for terrorism. “Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured, and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at and around the world from further attacks” is another example from the 9/11 Address to the Nation. In this Bush is saying the logical thing to do which is to help the wounded first. Another example of logos from the 9/11 speech is “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings but they cannot touch the foundation of America.” Bush is trying to say that America is a morally strong country and will not be hurt by this but will only become
Logos, ethos, and pathos are essential components used in advertising. By learning to recognize logos, ethos, and pathos in advertising, we are able to understand the message and what is being portrayed. (Albert et al, 2014), suggested that Aristotle postulated that a speaker’s ability to effectively convince an audience is constructed on how well the speaker appeals to that audience in three different areas: logos, ethos, and pathos. These appeals together form what Aristotle calls a rhetorical triangle.
This supports his central idea because he is saying that the attacks did not and will not stop the function of the United States businesses or financial ability. The president uses Logos here because he sounds confident and states things that will happen. Another central idea that President Bush conveys in his address to the people is, that the people remain whole and united. This can be noticed when he says, “A great people has been moved to defend a great nation” (Bush). This supports his central idea because it shows that the people of the United States are ready to defend themselves and the others within their nation.
Writers use pathos, ethos, and logos in their writing to appeal to their audience. Pathos is an appeal to emotions, ethos is an appeal to trust, and logos is an appeal to reasoning or logic. Frederick Douglass's, " What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" is about his views and the views of many slaves towards the Fourth of July. He uses ethos, pathos, and logos effectively to convey his central message.
December 7th, 1941 is a date known by many people, both American and others. On that day, over three hundred Japanese fighter airplanes attacked the naval base on Pearl Harbor. It was a surprise attack nobody had expected, and because of that, Japan managed to do a lot of damage. About 3000 people died, and the United States lost many military weapons and soldiers. In this paper, I will explain the happenings leading up to the attack, and how the United States reacted after the attack. I will also answer the question of how the attack affected the United States entrance the war.
Logos is presented as a form of logic and offers the most relatable method of communication to an audience, as it is so commonly used. Since Aristotle can be the most authoritative on the three forms of appeals, logos can be viewed
9/11 was a very traumatic event in the United States. On 9/11, a series of terrorist attacks took place. There were a total of four hijacked planes that was involved with this historical event. Two planes went right for the World Trade Center or the “Twin Towers.” A hijacker flew the third plane into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed into a field in rural Pennsylvania. Thousands of lives were ended that day. On the night of September 11, 2001 at 8:30 PM, the whole nation came together to listen to President George W. Bush’s speech. His use of ethos and pathos is good for explaining the issue and being able to talk about what has happened. His use of logos, or logic, is successful because he gives reasoning for what he did when the attacks first happened and how he handled everything.
Aside from the use of pathos, President Bush also uses logos, which is the persuasion through logic. President Bush informs the country that “these acts of mass murder [are] intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat” (Bush 1). This is a form of logos because logically the terrorist group attacked because of their hatred of freedom, and the United States was a symbol of that freedom to many people. President Bush uses logos in this situation because he wants to not only persuade his viewers that this is done by a group of terrorist, but also to inform those who do not understand why this event happens. Towards the
Logos is the use of logic or reason to persuade an audience that the speaker’s idea makes sense and is pertinent to them.
The past 120 years have brought many changes, as well as surprises, to the United States of America. There have been inventions such as the automobile, the airplane, the television and even travel in space. There have been changes like the World Wars, Prohibition, the Great Depression and the cold war. Through the years, the American people have encountered joy, peace, and tragedy. One of the greatest tragedies experienced by Americans occurred on Sunday, December 7, 1941, the bombing of Pearl Harbor Naval Base. One could consider this incident the first act of terrorism against America. The attack and defeat of the United States at Pearl Harbor forced America into World War II. This single act left a tremendous impact on society and is
In American history two tragic events have become iconic in American society. These events are the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the attacks against America on September 11, 2001. On December 7, 1941, the American naval base Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese empire. On 9/11 the World Trade Center was attacked by Islamic men. These men hijacked two planes and crashed the planes into the World Trade Center in New York. A third plane was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon in Washington DC. A fourth plane crashed into a field southeast of Pittsburgh due to resistance from the passengers and crew. The American presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and George W. Bush gave speeches. The speeches were designed to inform and to reassure the American people. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the president at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, gave a speech to Congress which was recorded so the American people knew what had occurred. George W. Bush, the American president during the September, 11th 2001, event, addressed the nation later on September 11th. In the
Bush successfully uses logos throughout this speech. Bush is very direct with the statements he uses to prove his points and to stand firm for America. Bush is very clear that the events that took place on 9/11 will not have a lasting effect on the American people. He states, “we will stand together to win the war against terrorism” (Bush, 2001, para.
Logos is defined as an appeal to logic. I feel like he uses this the most out of all of the other ones because this speech is meant to appeal to logic because it is reasons on why we need to end the war. The first time he uses logos is when he starts talking about why we are in need of peace. In the speech he says “We entered this war because violations of our right had occured…” (1). I feel like this is a logical explanation as to why people go to war and why this war had begun. Therefore, it appeals to your logic.
Examining their similarities and difference can provide a better understand on the impact of one group or countries decisions to attack a state and the social and political consequences that follow. The anatomic bombing of Hiroshima Japan was conducted by the United States on August 6th, 1945 during the last months of the war. The explosion wiped out 90 percent of the city and immediately killed 80,000 people tens of thousands more would later die of radiation exposure (Bombing of Hiroshima). In the process decimating the city itself leaving it a wasteland. 56 years later on September 11, 2011, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Queda hijacked four airlines within the United States they then proceeded to carry out suicide attacked against the United States. Two of the planes where flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York while the others landed in a field and into the pentagon. The two events marked some of the saddest most horrific days in our worlds history creating discussion on the definition of terror.
Yesterday, December 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan”(Roosevelt). Although the dates have been changed the theme is the same. September 11, 2001, the United States, was suddenly and deliberately attacked by Islamic terrorists who used American planes to attack three sites on American soil killing thousands of Americans. Sadly, these terrorists entered the airports, boarded planes, and attacked the crews with weapons that they hid in their luggage.
The unforgettable dates in America’s History are the days in which America was deliberately attacked. On these dates American lives were lost – many women, children, and men died. These dates are the only attacks America has ever had on her homeland. One of those unforgettable dates was September 11, 2001, where terrorist groups attacked America’s cities, a day in which America realized that there was real evil in the World. Another date that will always be unforgettable is December 7th 1941. On this date American lives were changed forever. America was attacked on our shores for the first time in our History. Many asked who could ever dare attack America like this, or who could ever find the courage to attack America like this way? This attack was not done terrorist groups; this time a country deliberately did this attack. On December 7th 1941 Japan decided to attack America. This attack meant war; this attack was the attack that woke the giant up. The eyes were on America now, how would America respond, how would America take revenge? Did this mean that America would be involved in another great war? America responded firmly, America showed that the attack was a huge mistake for Japan. Yes, America lost many lives in this surprise attack, but America would show their mighty strength. This is why December 7th 1941 is an unforgettable date in America’s history.
