December 7th 1941 Japan decided to launch an unexpected attack on the United States pacific fleet. Just before 8am Japan dropped hundreds of fighter planes on the American naval fleet at Pearl Harbor which is in central Oahu, Hawaii. The Japanese destroyed close to 20 American naval vessels, including 8 huge battleships. Although America had a lot of major losses at this stage, Japan didn’t know about the American aircraft carrier at this point. All they knew was that the naval ships were the most important and them being oblivious to these panes. America could now fire from miles and miles away and had the potential to destroy a lot. The United States code broke the Japanese planned ambush, and were able to figure it out before it happened, which prevented them from potentially loosing this fight. On 4th June, the Americans found the Japanese fleet. While the Japanese were re-fuelling, they were quite venerable. This meant that the Americans ambushed the Japanese and destroyed 4 fleet carriers. The Japanese had 322 aircrafts and 5 thousand soldiers on board while these carriers were being destroyed. Japan had major losses on this day, but America didn’t go un injured either. With 147 aircrafts and more than 300 sea men were also taken down. The Japanese where not going to surrender and the Americans did not want to give up on this war either. America decided the only way to end the war and make the Japanese surrender, was to go to extreme lengths. A B-29 atomic bomb was dropped over the Japanese city, Hiroshima. This was the world’s first atomic bomb and the world was very surprised about the damage that it made. This explosion wiped out 90% of the city and immediately killed 80,000 people. Tens of thousands then died later from radiation exposure. This wakeup call still didn’t get the Japanese to surrender. So, America dropped another atomic bomb, this time in Nagasaki.
