This base was originally a normal bay until the late 1800s when an agreement between America and Hawaii was made. At this time, Hawaii wanted to make their sugar industry stronger by taking away the money needed to send sugar into America. America accepted this, but in return gained access to Pearl Harbor and changed it into a refueling station for its army. 10 years after this agreement, America won a war against the Spanish, and gained land within the pacific such as the Philippines. Pearl Harbor is not just any ordinary national landmark. 76 years ago the naval base in Hawaii was bombed by the Japanese. There were many bombs used in Pearl Harbor such as the 98 Land Bomb, 91 Model Torpedo this bomb did most damage to the ships, and 99 Anti-Ship bomb which took out the USS Arizona this bomb weighed around 1,750 pounds (or around 800 kg). Early on the morning of December 7, 1941 the Japanese Navy launched a surprise aerial attack on the U.S naval base in Hawaii known as Pearl Harbor. The attacked killed thousands of American servicemen and women and injured just slightly over 1,000 more. The U.S. Navy took a huge blow to its Pacific Fleet with many of its battleships being damaged or destroyed. The bombardment by Japanese aircraft also crippled the U.S. airpower at the base destroying over 200 planes. “Japan hoped that the attack would cripple the U.S. Pacific Fleet and deter it from slowing Japanese advances in the region” (The Daily Signal). Relations between America and Japan had been on a downward slope with its alliance with Germany and their aggressive behavior in Indochina.

The American’s hoped that dropping two atomic bombs in Japan would in fact bring an end to World War 2, as they would be forced to surrender, without American soldiers needing to invade Japan. Many believe that the USA also wanted to prove its superiority to the rest of the world and this was the perfect way for them to do so. Six days after the attack on Nagasaki, Japan surrendered to the USA and the war was announced over.

So the United States needed to find a different strategy; they began to fire bomb all of Japan and gave the Japanese multiple warnings one of which clearly stated to Japan that if they refused surrender, they would meet “prompt and utter destruction.” After these attempts at peace the U.S. had no choice but to drop two atomic bombs, the first and last nuclear warheads to ever be used in history. The two bombs named “Little Boy” and “Fat Man,” dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively, lead to the deaths of around 200,000 people.
