a list of annotated references drawn from pedagogical journals in business, how each teaching approach meets the needs of learners in specific ways, and the strengths and challenges of the approach.
The proposal is now under review at two leading academic publishers. Another medium-term project is creating a global network of academics partnering closely with practitioners, managers, and refugees focused on all resettlement issues.
For my higher education-focused research, a medium-term project involves securing global partners to pilot the service-learning/community-based teaching student evaluation of teaching and learning (SET) instrument we have developed through the Center for Civic Engagement and the Center for Service-Learning. Another component of my work with the CCE is serving as a Faculty Mentor and Advisor to the Clinton Global Initiative University activities. In this role I provide coaching, mentorship, and training for students developing social innovations in the focus areas of poverty alleviation, education, peace and human rights, climate change, and public health. This October, I will escort our student participants to the conference in Boston, MA at Northeastern University.
In the SOM, I am one of the two faculty members responsible for all assessment data in the Business & Management degree program. Additionally, I have served on short-term working groups like awards committees, redesigned our teaching evaluations with the chair, and regularly assume tasks as assigned by the chair and Dean.
In all these roles, I have sought to support or define the charge of the committee while bringing my organizational development and training background to support process improvements in workflow and decision making. In these roles try to model positive organizational citizenship behaviors by being prepared, being responsive to committee leadership, sharing my views in a productive manner, and asking questions about process and procedure. In the future, I hope to serve the SOM in whatever roles are needed and serve the College in leadership positions such as the Director for Service-Learning and in the emerging Teaching
I was the activities director and as activities director, I executed and supervised extracurricular activities, programs, and field trips. I created and designed promotional materials for all activities, wrote and published school newsletters, and managed social media content. Being an adolescent in this position, gave me a better insight on what the students desired and I, in turn, gave the students a greater experience in that area. I will take that drive, determination, and experience, and everything I learned from it and apply it to my schoolwork and my overall college
The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) is the primary professional organization for school psychologists in the U.S. NASP is dedicated to improving the mental health and education of students.
From this passion, I have worked in my community to become more globally minded. I was incredibly fortunate to be selected by my high school to attend the 16th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, in which I listened to Nobel Prize winners talk about peacebuilding around the world, further inspiring me to work in social reform. This past July, I was selected to attend Camp Rising Sun, where I developed my leadership skills while living with 60 young women from around the
This is a category that I feel we are slowing getting better at. There is a wide variety of classes whether it be here or at Indian Hills that teaches students the basics of business. I feel as though more in depth in classes should be taught on how to own and run a business rather than how a business works. The idea of teaching students about business laborers is taught more than being business leaders. This is why business leaders are a lot less common. Teaching students that they can be more successful than working under someone is something that should be done
Diversity encompasses numerous characteristics including socio-economic background, ethnicity, special needs, gender, and giftedness (Cazden, 2001). Today, classrooms are getting more varied and diverse with students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and students with a disability. It appears that teachers must meet the needs of all students successfully and individually to effectively teach a classroom of diverse students. This paper will first identify three challenges involved with ensuring that teaching strategies are
The purpose of public education is to enable students to be contributing members of society. Without it, the world would not be as we know it today in a very intelligent and complex society. Education is important in very many ways, probably too many to be listed. But I believe that among all other things that it allows students, by being educated, to live their lives in a way in which they can be successful in whatever they do. By learning about the trials and errors of those who came before us permits students to make well thought out decisions later on in their life. I personally hope to be able to better my students' lives by educating them about the overall curriculum and standards brought about
In this heavily pretreated patient population, pemetrexed, a 2nd generation antifolate agent produced an objective response of 26% (4/15) in patients with thymoma. 2 complete responses and 2 partial responses were documented, whereas there was only one partial response in patients with thymic carcinoma. The response rate of 9% in patients with thymic carcinoma suggests that pemetrexed is not active in this more aggressive phenotype. This is the first study to prospectively demonstrate the clinical activity of pemetrexed in thymic malignancies and solidifies the role of pemetrexed in the second line, and beyond in advanced thymoma. Prior to this, a Phase I trial of pemetrexed conducted in Japan demonstrated a partial response in one patient
At my ongoing placement year at KPMG, I was recently assigned as the In-charge for a group of three summer undergraduate interns from the months of June – August 2016. My role included acting as a guide to the new recruits, showing them the ropes of the various functionalities of the unit, and being their first point of contact in case of any issues or challenges that may arise at work. This was a very good experience that gave me an insight on leadership in the professional environment, and also gave me the chance to see the importance of not only to be a “teacher” in a position of leadership but also the relevance of being a “student” as well. At university, I had the opportunity to be the Treasurer of the FXU chapter of Enactus, a society
Over the past year, I have been involved in several committees at the department and college levels. When I began my service at UDC, I was a member of the Faculty Senate for two years. This allowed me to learn the university culture and the importance of shared governance. Thereafter, the committees in which I volunteered to serve were, not only interdisciplinary and collaborative, but were those that served the needs of students. For example, in the past, I served as a member of the College of Arts and Sciences Grievance Committee which met as needed to resolve instructor/student conflicts. My colleagues on the Committee were representatives of every division in the College. The challenge of meeting the student’s needs as well as being
Planning and directing this service project taught me to lead by example, delegate responsibility, and be a conscientious organizer preparing me for the demands required of a leader in today’s society. I plan to use this experience to continue to serve my community and nation. Service to me is not just another thing that I can add to my college application, but is a deeper commitment. Service forges an unbreakable bond between me and those I serve, and a bond that I cherish very
I serve as a member of the SEM senior leadership team to assist the Interim Vice Provost for SEM with strategic planning for enrollment in order to determine effective strategies toward achieving desired outcomes. On a daily basis, I serve as ombudsman for the Enrollment Service areas of SEM meeting and responding to emails and phone calls from students, parents, faculty, staff, and upper administration. Moreover, I serve on several university committees to include the Academic Regulations Appeals Committee (acting chair as needed); Transgender and Inclusion; Compliance and Integrity; Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society (Vice President for Public Relations); and HR Redesign. To ensure compliance with federal law, I do FERPA training, as
Ms. Rector is very willing to take on challenging tasks which require a great deal of organizational skills. She has been a great support for the staff and students who participated in
I am a biology major. Our task was to find an academic journal that pertains to our specific major, I did just that. I ventured to the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences to obtain my article. I am glad I did because the material is fascinating and heavily relates to my interests. The article I choose is called “Shared Genetic Predisposition in Peripartum and Dilated Cardiomyopathies” which has a large number of contributors. This article has heavy uses of jargon that even I had a difficult time understanding.
I am pursuing doctoral studies in the International Development program at the University of Ottawa under the supervision of Dr. Rebecca Tiessen. I have completed the coursework portion of the program in addition to one of the two required comprehensive examinations. I anticipate beginning the field research outlined below in the Fall Semester of 2016.
She stated that her major roles and responsibilities as a faculty member is to teach classes, participate in the Advisory Committee meetings to assess ways to improve the program, reach out to local high schools to recruit students, and connect with different universities for articulation. She also shared some of the workshops that she put together for students as she invited counselors from her department to come to class to help students to write their resumes, practice interview skills, and share internship opportunities in the field of industrial design.
