I am aware that the mentorship chair position at PRID is vacant. Rose Trabert( CCBC mentor) had this position. She and I worked very well together at CCBC, coordinating mentors and mentees and teaming with students on a particular job site. After a few months, I was asked to take over the site. I accepted the position. Now, I am busy mentoring CCBC students at two sites. Rose has asked me on a few occasions to mentor students for PCRID. As much as I wanted to I had to decline the offer because, in addition to mentoring interpreters, I also mentor scientists and I am the Program Director for the DC Metro HBCU Alumni Alliance Inc. As a peer mentor at the College of San Mateo, I volunteer my time to help incoming freshmen thorough the rough transition of high school to community college. As a underrepresented student who moved to the U.S from a third world country, I work with a lot of students like myself and make sure that they have all the tools and resources to do well in their academics. I have meeting with my mentees every week to check their progress throughout the semester. In addition to weekly meetings, I also have one on one tutoring sessions to help my mentees if they are struggling in their classes, especially math and science.

The key to success lies in the ability to collaborate with others, which requires interpersonal skills. Throughout my profession, I have maintained a positive rapport with colleagues, parents, students, and administration. I attribute these productive partnerships partly to my attitudes about and toward others. By effectively communicating, listening, and questioning, coupled with a friendly demeanor, others find me approachable and a person with whom they easily work. These traits will contribute to my achievement as a literacy coach if selected for this position.
Reflecting upon my first year as a peer tutor, I must say that it has been an excellent experience because of what it has provided me. Strictly speaking, my ability to teach has improved, I have obtained many skills, and have found ways to use what I have acquired, to help me in the not-so-far future.
These last two weeks of mentoring have been going very smoothly for me. I feel as if my peer mentoring gears are finally revving up as I’m starting to understand how to be a successful peer mentor. The reason, I think, for my recent success as a peer mentor and the collaboration with the peer mentoring team is due to the weekly articles. With the weekly articles, I’m able to realize what made previous collaborations in my life so successful and what made the more unfavorable groups unsuccessful.
