During the past eight weeks of this course I enjoyed learning so many new writing strategies that I did not know before. This course has been a very intense and challenging class, with much knowledgeable information that I have gained in these short eight weeks. I will explain the things I have learned over this time such as, how I selected a topic for my persuasive essay, some key concepts I have learned from my research, my peer review feedback evaluations, how my classmates helped me understand points of view, and how my classmates provided me with additional writing strategies. When trying to find a good topic for my persuasive essay it seemed to be a bit of a struggle. I chose teen pregnancy and to convince my readers the cons of early …show more content…
These eight weeks I learned how to perform proper research and not just to Google something and believe the first thing you see. I have learned how to find a credible source and the signs showing that that source may not be so trustworthy. I learned during my research that when a credible source is found to not just summarize the information into your essay but to use that source and citations from that source to create a supporting argument. When supporting credible evidence is used in a paper it gives the reader trust worth information for them to go off. I know now to always have an author and to know how that author is related to the information to make sure it is a credible piece of research to …show more content…
I remember reading Stacey’s paper about internet pirating, and the harm it is causing to people. When I first started to read her paper, I knew from the start it defiantly wasn’t a topic I was interested in. As I continued to read I starting to instantly get a feel for her standpoint and immediately was interested. With the great supporting evidence she had obtained it really made me more interested in her point of view. Reading other classmates essays really gave me and opening eye to the different thinking we all have as individuals. We do not all think as one, we all have our own
When I first got accepted into Stuyvesant High School, I heard countless of rumors stating: “Oh the workload is terrible”, “The competition is so fierce” or “Out of schoolwork, extracurriculars, or sleep: you can only pick two.” I found it hard to let it faze me, since I graduated from one of the most prestigious middle schools. However, the rumors transformed into reality when I stepped into Mr. Nieves’ Freshman Composition Class. The workload at the beginning of the year was brutal, coupled with assignments from other core classes that seem unaware of the workload of other teachers. Reading assignments were a regular, and there were journal entries and occasional quizzes to keep us in line. What made it bearable was the friends I made in that class; everyone had their own opinion about the topic we were talking about, and listening to other perspectives really broadened my horizon and enriched my learning experience in Stuy. Another thing that this class has taught me is the importance of time management, a skill that I will carry on for the rest of my high school career and life. When I choose to sign up for Mr. Nieves’ AP American Literature class in my Junior Year, I was hoping to relive the discussion-based lesson plans and meet more outstanding peers. I was not disappointed, to say the least, reflecting through all the experiences at the end of the course. The lesson plans he laid out for us were an interesting mix between small lectures and class output, and what I
Throughout this semester I have learned many valuable resources, and tools. The big thing you taught us was how to write and argument paper. Also I have learned different tools on summarizing, how to better my skills for peer reviews, new library skills, and MLA format. Most of these I already knew, but you taught us them more in depth, and you gave me better understandings of them.
It is still so surreal to reflect back on my first semester as an incoming college student in the ENC1101 course, analyzing at my progression as a reader and writer in literacy. Since the first day of class I set in stone my goals for this class: receive a 4.0 GPA, develop my connecting theories skills in writing, and become more aware of objectives for each Unit throughout the course. All of these goals became achievements that not only make others proud but most importantly give me self pride. In order to earn the grades and achieve these goals, I went after every opportunity that I was given as an incoming college student, such as office hours and extra credit. By taking this course I have gained confidence with the utilization of literacy, and made an addition to my group of impactful literacy sponsors. Once students are finished with high school they assume that there is nothing else to learn beyond the stereotypical five paragraph essay, but they are so wrong. I was able to obtain so much knowledge about numerous course concepts from Writing about Writing, articles, and my professor. These concepts will carry on with me throughout a bright future of writing courses, job interviews, and any other skills that require literacy. The four outcomes listed below will help illuminate how I improved as a writer, by being a driven college student and going out of the way to earn my achievements in this course. In the first outcome I improved comprehending scholar texts,
I learned how to respond orally and in writing to evaluate, analyze, and critically assess the ideas and meaning of diverse texts by composing summary and strong response, and exploratory research paper. Summary and strong response paper taught me how to be firm and fair way to thinking. This is very useful at work. I can use this to improve my
I believe that all of the new things I learned this year will benefit me exceedingly for future goals I am reaching for, in particular, the scholarship essay. Next year I will be senior and I will be applying for many different scholarships throughout the year. After receiving a very good grade on that paper, I am confident that I will write several other great scholarship essays in pursuit of grants towards my college debt. Another important lesson I learned for the future, is my ability to know how to cite sources correctly, and give an author the credit they deserve. This information will be very valuable to me not only next year in Composition one and two, but also on papers that I will have to write in
While taking this class, I have developed as a writer, arguer and college student. My writing style and organization have greatly improved this semester, as I have learned through writing several different papers. As an arguer, I have
My journey through Writer’s Composition has been a rocky rollercoaster with ups and downs, but from these experiences I have grown as a writer overall. The essays I have written for this course demonstrate that I have developed critical thinking and have shown minor improvements in my communication skills. They also demonstrate that though I have made some progress in personal responsibility and general writing skills, I still have work to do. From Writer’s Composition Two, I have developed an understanding of persuasive writing, and I now am able to pick a topic or a claim and argue it in classic argument writing.
Review of my course, I have learned some new techniques that have improved my writing and learning how to tone, grammatical errors, and writing format such as MLA style, and how to use them in my writing. Looking for appropriate essays for my research essay was the hardest part since I must read every essay related to the topic thoroughly, and look for points that can support my arguments. As for the argument part, I have learned how to provide an argument, and how to look for reliable sources in OC library and to properly quote and paraphrase. My improvement of writing skills can be seen in each essay. Before class. I have to read a lot of readings and it made me nervous. This is like an impossible mission, but I am glad that I finally go
I’ve been writing essays and papers for at least six years with several of the years writing an average of an essay weekly. My writing is definitely not perfect. It leaves numerous improvements to be desired, but the practice I’ve had has left me with several characteristics that I greatly appreciate about my writing. Likewise, while taking Writing 122 this term, there are various improvements that I desire to make in my writing as we dive into the finer aspects of persuasive writing and argumentation.
As quoted above, teachers face a wide variety of challenges when trying to differentiate instruction for ELLs with LD. This is why early identification of both ELL status and LD is vital so early reading interventions can begin and students can have the most opportunity to benefit from the collaborations of their ELL teachers, Special Education teachers, reading interventionists and their general education teacher. This collaboration helps to create efficient and effective means of bridging the knowledge gaps, which will in turn provide a more comprehensible instructional experience for ELLs with LD.
Throughout the semester in this WRT 106 class we were assigned different assignments, each with a different purpose but all having to do with one main topic. The topic I decided to focus on this semester was police brutality. It is safe to say I have really enhanced my knowledge on this topic. Each project provided more and more knowledge to myself on this topic because of all the research associated with the assignment. The assignments throughout the semester were challenging, interesting, and had a process behind them that involved a lot of revision and feedback from many of my peers, but in the end of it all there were many learning outcomes as well. Looking back on this class, I have realized just how much my writing has improved since the beginning of the semester and that first assignment.
By far, my favorite paper from this semester had to have been the multi-modal project. Although the assignment was not a paper, my power point presentation seemed to interest majority of the class. The things I enjoyed most about the multi-modal was that we’re able to write in a digital format, which allowed us to freely express ourselves, giving our readers the opportunity to receive our full understanding.
Through the assignments of our active reading journals I learned how to look deeper into thing and really explore their entire meaning. Taking something simple that I read and writing about experiences and what I thought about it really help this ability grow throughout the semester. Through the discussion in this class I learned a lot more about each chapter. I looked forward to the discussion because I enjoyed hearing everyone else’s way of thinking. Something’s mentioned in the discussion I would have never thought about. Although I didn’t participate in the discussion as much as others I felt like it got better throughout the semester. I have never really been one to open up to big crowds and share my opinion. Due to many reasons. But the discussion allowed me to tear down a little bit of that wall. Both of these experiences are something I know I will experience throughout my entire college career and learning them the first semester is something that will really help me along the way.
For my peer reflection assignment, I chose to review a video posted by Lana Pachuca. I chose her video because I have watched most of my classmates videos over the past few weeks, however this was the first week I was able to watch one of hers. Also, her counseling session was focusing on helping a client deal with coping skills for anxiety and I was interested in seeing the outcomes of the client using the coping skills over the course of a week.
My reflection of my fall paper has been very useful for my current semester. I have taken the advice from the fellowship workshop to keep in touch with my professors and get to know them so they will be there if I need them to write me a letter of recommendation, which I did need for a summer study abroad trip I applied for. I have also started working on my thesis proposal so managing the thesis has been useful for me. This workshop helped me find resources which I was able to find a dataset that I am planning to use for my thesis.
