It helps you, the tutor, with fulfilling the lesson requirements if you can ascertain in advance any special learning requirements or needs your learners have during the time they are in your class. This may, for example, be access for a wheelchair, being aware if someone is dyslexic, if someone has particular religious beliefs which must be catered for or whether someone needs to take medicine at a certain time. Then, when aware of any special needs, ensuring that these needs are met in a caring and professional manner.
The need for tutors is overwhelming. Tutors help fill the gap between the teachers and the students. With so many students in each classroom, the teacher can't give each student the one-on-one attention that some students need. This is where tutors come in to play. Tutors have been a key instrument ineducation since as far back as the 1500's (Gordon 9). Tutoring is almost as old as educating children. Tutoring younger students is also still going strong in the twentieth century. Today it is more~important than ever due to the increase in students and low budgets that some schools have. As stated by Edward E. Gordon in his book, Centuries of Tutoring" Schoolinghas dominated the twentieth century, but tutoring still holds an important
Being a part of my school’s peer tutoring program has been the most gratifying experience of my high school career. As a student, I can relate to those that struggle in a subject and are unable to connect with the material being taught in class. I have worked with students who have lost confidence in themselves because of the difficulty they were having in school. To be given the opportunity to assist students to reach their academic goals is fulfilling. As a peer tutor, I edit essays, share scholarship searches, assist with homework, and provide studying tips and test taking strategies. I enjoy working with my group to develop habits to be more successful. With each higher grade earned, test anxiety relieved, and confident smile of those that I help, I know that the work I am doing is
Peer tutoring, is simply helping your peers to the best of your ability, with a subject that they are struggling with or just want justification on. I personally have been tutoring others since I was in seventh grade when I began helping elementary school aged children with their homework after school at a community center near my middle school. Tutoring became a newly found passion of mine at that time, and I have enjoyed the opportunity ever since. When I saw that Antioch offered tutoring as a senior class, I was ecstatic, and I signed up immediately. If I am not mistaken, similar to signing up for service learning, one must have a teacher recommendation to take this particular course. There may be other guidelines that I am not aware of at the time, but believe me, taking peer tutoring is well worth it. As a senior, you have to worry about applying to colleges or jobs, applying for scholarships, getting community service hours, working, finishing your capstone project, taking senior pictures, making invitations and announcements, finding internships, and so much
I’m definitely not the best student in the world, but I sure am one of the hardest working students I know. It was very easy to find me because I was always either at work, school, home, taking care of my grandma, or babysitting. I definitely had my head screwed on tight. I do believe that because I was/am taking care of so many people and trying to help my parents out financially, my grades have slipped quicker than I anticipated. I took on two study halls my junior year, and am taking on two study halls my senior year also. This definitely dropped my grade point average but I don’t regret it. I spend my study halls tutoring the students at my school. I specifically tutor for the Writing center and when I’m not tutoring for that, I’m helping
This tool would address MP’s LD because peer instruction allows students to discuss problems in a low-risk setting, thus relieving the student’s anxiety. It allows MP to explain her thinking by sharing
I enjoyed tutoring when my students fully understood how to find the solution for the problem and start enjoying Math. Peer tutoring is interesting for me and for my students as Math become enjoyable by practicing repeatedly. The more you practice and remember simple steps, the more you fall in love with Math.
Tutoring help me by improving my grades . I started going to torturing when I was in second grade. Second grade was hard me because I didn’t do my math ,english, science homework and I was repeating the second grade which was harder because the work was different from my old school. Also, the work was difficult to keep up with , so I told my mom if she can sign me up for tutoring. It took her two - three weeks to find me a tutoring club. which it help me in life.
During instructional time some teachers encounter difficulties spending one on one time with the students in their classrooms, especially those students with special needs. Teachers complete many tasks on a day to day basis in their classrooms and many times face the challenge of offering individualized instruction to those students in need of it.
I have tutored in less structured environments, such as helping friends and classmates with, particularly difficult homework assignments. And I have tutored in a volunteering position, particularly with English, French, and Biology. My academics also show that I am a dedicated learner. I have taken several different sciences, math, and writing classes that give me a broader range of topics to pull from. To me, the best way to tutor someone is to determine what they are having trouble with and why. From there, it is about tailoring each experience to each student. Some are visual learners, so graphs and images will work better. Others are auditory learners, so hearing the problems will help them better work out the answer. I will strive to ensure each student improves and make it so that they are not frustrated by the process. Sometimes, learning new things is hard, and it is my job to make the process fun, interesting and pushes the students to be better than
One strategy/ intervention that I would like to know more about is peer-assisted learning strategies, especially for those in secondary education beings that is the level of students that I serve. What works clearinghouse defines “Peer-assisted learning strategies (PALS) as a peer-tutoring instructional program that supplements the primary reading curriculum. Pairs of students work together on reading activities intended to improve reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. Students in the pairs read aloud, listen to their partner read, and provide feedback during various structured activities,” (What Works Clearinghouse, 2012, p. 1). Being a special education teacher working with many struggling readers I am often finding myself with limited strategies that keep my students engaged, let alone excited about reading. “Extensive research has shown repeatedly that systematic
For example, my nephew is partially deaf and his hearing aid helps him to hear things more clearly. What his hearing aid does not allow him to hear he is able to interpret from his teacher with the use of sign language. This allows him to get all the tools needed to be successful as the other students. I believe student that learn with their peers have higher self-esteem, and feel better about themselves. A good example of supplemental aid is a child in a wheel chair and ramps are where they are needed. This student is in a regular class because their disability does not prevent them from learning at the same rate as her peers. The student grades can even be better their peers. Because this child was giving all the aid and universal design they needed to be successful academically. The benefit of this was the child preform as their peers, build confidence and in my opinion was able to feel like they were not too different than the other children. I also believe this is a great example of inclusion in the classroom. Disability student among their peers. Student are not treated different due to their disability but are giving support to help achieve their academic goals. This can be done by modifying lessons like reading out loud
After school tutoring will be provided assistance in math, English, social science and +history; students will be able to have one-one private conversations with their tutors. The purpose of the program is to guide students to become independed of their own learning, tutors will be responsible to help students to set goals and to recognize their strengths. Some of the benefits of receiving tutoring is, students will improve study skills, build strong relationships and create a positive attitude towards learning. On a recent study found that students with learning disabilities who received support of a trained tutors earn an average or better grades on quizzes and test (Hock, Pulvers, Deshler,Schumaker, 2001), without the help of tutors Ells students will not be able to achieve the same results. The majority corps members do not have any prior background information on how to read nor write, volunteer’s will be able to design several lesson plans that will help corps members to become more familiar with the vocabulary and help them adjust much
Tutoring taught me a lot about how to teach in the most effective way for that particular students, how to gauge when to listen to the ideas of others and when to provide my own, and how to make ideas more understandable and relatable. All of these skills are essential to being a mentor and would aid in creating the ELI experience for the future
Using academic advising is essential for me as well because it will offer me a personal connection with the institution of my interest. From instance, improving educational outcomes for students is an important issue for educators. Tutoring programs have the potential to turn academic failure into academic success. Personally, tutoring has been an important part of my education. Over the past years speaking the english language has been a necessity, however with learning this new language there is a lot of difficulties that one has to overcome. As a beginner of foreign language, my english tutoring sessions at the TRIO program allowed me to drill my writing and reading skills. Learning a whole new language in six years has been the result
