Discussion: These experiments were established to find which fuel, out of Pentane, Propan-1-ol and Propan-2-ol would be the most suitable to take on a camping trip to cook with. As shown by the graphs below, Pentane contains a lot more energy than the other two fuels, this means it is more flammable than both Propan-1-ol and Propan-2-ol but is also a lot more dangerous because it can get out of control easier, as seen in the tests conducted. The aim of this experiment was to determine which fuel, out of Pentane, Propane-1-ol and Propane-2-ol would be the most appropriate to take on a camping trip to a national park where wood cannot be used to burn. Factors that need to be considered are: • Heat of combustion (flash point) • Heat of vaporisation (boiling point) • …show more content…
Pentane, which is the most flammable out of the three fuels is also used up the quickest, this isn’t ideal if you want to use it as a fuel to cook with as you would need to take more of it with you. All of the fuels heated the water up fairly quickly and although the time taken wasn’t measured, Pentane did seem the quickest to heat up the water whereas Propan-1-ol and Propan-2-ol were approximately the same. Overall it Propan-2-ol appears to be the best choice to take camping as it has the lowest flash point which means it will still ignite in temperatures down to 11.7⁰C, is not as dangerous as Pentane and does not get used up or evaporate as quickly and heats water up fairly rapidly as there were no uncontrolled fires in any of the tests and accurate measurements of mass were able to be recorded as the Propan-2-ol didn’t fluctuate like the Pentane
The burn rate of the mixture was recorded with a video camera and the results recorded and timed. The resulting footage was reviewed and the duration of the combustion noted on a tenth of a second basis. 4 grams of Alliant Green Dot double-base smokeless flake powder with no KClO4 added was also recorded twice in the same manner, to give a baseline burn time and averaged.
b) A full propane tank and an outdoor gas burner (We recommend the Jet Burners for cooking crawfish)
The most reactive substance in this lab was the crushed liver core, it produced the most amount of heat, bubbles, and the biggest flame during the glowing splint test. The manganese dioxide and the liver core were also very reactive and they both produced a flame during the glowing splint test. Next, the potato core produced a slight reaction, but it was not as extreme as the other substances. Finally, just the hydrogen peroxide and the boiled liver core had no reaction and did not produce a flame during the glowing splint test.
The product mix for the camping category at Cabela’s is impressive. A camper can get everything they need for great adventure at Cabela’s store and/or online. The Web site has a marketing campaign that lets the consumer choose what kind of camping adventure they want to take, backcountry camping, family camping, or day camping. When you click on the type of camping you would like to do, you are directed to product offerings for your choice. The offerings are comprehensive and allow you to plan your camping trip. Being able to see what products available helps the consumer have confidence that they are prepared to go camping.
It was desired to compare a theoretical value of enthalpy of combustion to a literature value. To do this, the theoretical value was calculated using a literature value for the heat of sublimation of naphthalene, the heat of vaporization of water and average bond energies, given in Table 1 of the lab packet.1 Equations (1) and (5) were used to calculate the theoretical enthalpy of combustion of gaseous naphthalene, where n was the number of moles, m was the number of bonds, and ΔH was the average bond energy:
While camping is generally an inexpensive way to spend some time outdoors, the simple meals that follow will can help campers stay to a very minimal budget. It is important for beginner campers to realize that there are many simple meals that can be made without purchasing specialized camping cookware (which can be very expensive!). If you don't have any cookware that can be used over an open fire, check out your local thrift stores for simple cookware that can be used. A frying pan (cast iron is preferable) and pot for boiling water is enough cookware for most camping trips. There are also many foods that can be cooked in aluminum foil alone without the use of any other cookware. Develop meals around the materials that you have and foods that you like to assure an inexpensive trip. Here are some cheap and easy to make meal ideas to get you started. Pancakes make a cheap and easy camping breakfast. A plastic drinking cup with a snap on lid is great for mixing the batter (by shaking the sealed cup) and pouring onto a pan. Instant rice that is made from boiling water is another inexpensive meal starter. Either eaten alone or with meat and vegetables, instant rice is filling and very cheap. Other foods made from boiling or hot water that are inexpensive and can be the basis for cheap camping meals include Ramen Noodles, oatmeal, and instant potatoes. The campfire baked potato is one food that is cheap and easy to make while
Data gathered from the National Vital Statistics System says that from 1999 to 2011, a total of 16,911 deaths in the United States for an average of 1,301 deaths per year that was associated with exposure to excessive natural cold. Many of these deaths could have been prevented if a fire was built to warm the victim, or a signal for help. In the following paragraphs I will explain how to build a teepee fire to whomever is reading this. It will cover all the basic skills and techniques needed to build a successful tepee fire. I will also give some tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years.

Wildfires have always been a part of our lives on this rock we call Earth. Over the years we have developed tried and true ways to battle and extinguish them, but in the recent past it has become more and more of a problem considering their increase in size and weather patterns. These factors have been termed with a phase every American knows all too well, “Global Warming!” The western half of the United States has had to deal with these fires more than any other area of the country. Of the western half, the state of Colorado has seen its share of some of the worst wildfires. Since the 1970 's the normal number of flames in excess of 1,000 sections of land every year has almost quadrupled in Arizona and Idaho, and has multiplied in
Mass of water x 4.2 (water’s specific heat capacity) x temperature change = energy transferred from the fuel to the water
This charcoal may be burned in today's coal-powered electric generators. Methanol makes a good automobile fuel, in fact it is used in professional automobile races. It may someday replace gasoline.
The aim of this experiment was to test the heat of combustion over a period of time, and the energy required to combust alcohols with different carbon chain levels. It was hypothesised that the higher the carbon chain of the alcohol present, the faster the heat of combustion will occur. Meaning more energy will be released for a higher carbon chain. After calculating the results from the experiment it was found that the hypothesis was partially supported. The reasoning for this is as the alcohol that posses a higher carbon chain, generally increased there reaction rates. However there were a few exceptions to this rule.
Since fire is a key to survival that most people overlook, we have found a great way to start fires, which will enable you to cook and stay warm. This fire starting kit contains a ferrocerium rod and a metal striker. It has a lanyard to keep it where you are able to find it along with an emergency whistle so you can call out to others. The tinder has a waterproof storage compartment and it is great to have during any
Choosing the right type of tent stove often requires a bit of research to determine which features will best meat your individual needs. For instance, the TMS STOVE-2346 Portable Military Camping Tent Steel Wood Stove is designed for use in an outfitters tent with a stove pipe vent. Along with its easy access cleanout features and removable cooking
Have you ever went camping with friends or family and admired the welcoming campfires that were built? Roasting marshmallows, sharing stories, or just sitting and absorbing the nature around you are just a few of the many enjoyable activities that can be done with a bonfire! However, what may look like a simple set-up might be more complex than one would assume. In fact, there are several steps a person should follow when constructing a campfire. Practicing these instructions can not only lead to a more successful, thriving bonfire, but can also guide you to becoming more safe and aware. When my dad taught me how to build a fire, it was an overall bonding experience. He was patient with me through the many failed attempts and constantly reminded me that safety was the most important factor. The skills that I learned from him will continue to come in handy any time my friends or family want to gather around a campfire.
