PepsiCo is a global food and beverage leader with net revenues of more than $65 billion and a product portfolio that includes twenty-two brands that generate more than $1 billion each in annual retail sales. PepsiCo’s main businesses - Quaker, Tropicana, Gatorade, Frito-Lay and Pepsi-Cola - make hundreds of foods and beverages that are consumed throughout the world. It currently holds 36 percent of the total snack-food market share in the U.S. and 25 percent of the market share of the refreshment beverage industry. Frito-Lay has tried to combat the issue by offering Baked Lays, Baked Cheetos, SunChips, and other healthier alternatives. These alternatives are claimed to be healthier all-around. For example, the Frito-Lay website has a special area devoted to health that describes the ingredients of Frito-Lay snacks and encourages consumers to practice moderation in snack food consumption. As an employee, I am fully aware that PepsiCo does not provide the healthiest snacks and beverage for consumers. I, myself, do not eat or drink our products, especially the “Fun for You” category, on a daily basis. However, I was always under the impression that as a socially responsible company, PepsiCo tries it best to provide healthier choices and is very transparent with the contents going into our products. In fact, one of the goals of our CEO Indra Nooyi is to invest more in health food. The company has already claimed that $10 billion came from healthy snacks the company offers. What is more, to tackle this issue, the company hired health officials. Formerly employed at institutions like the World Health Organization and the Mayo Clinic, these Pepsi employees are now researching healthier ingredients to put in PepsiCo snacks.
