Perception Is Not Reality

Have you ever thought you heard something, but there was nothing there? Have you ever thought you saw someone in the corner of your eye, and when you looked there was no person there? When we look down from a high building on people, do they appear small like ants? Aren't there thousands of occasions when we do misperceive? What is reality and perception? Mainstream science describes reality as "the state of things as they actually exist". So reality is simply: everything we observe. The opening statement of the article Looks can deceive: Why Perception and Reality Don't Always Match Up by Christof Koch reads as follows; “When you are facing a tricky task, your view of the world may not be as accurate as you think” (Koch, 2010) In this article Koch argues that a human’s conscious perception of the world is neither static or accurate. That people everywhere are incapable of being one hundred percent objective and therefore their awareness of objects surrounding them is dependent on factors such as personal strength, confidence, fears and desires. Koch states that being human is equal to “seeing the world through your own, constantly shifting, lens” (Koch, 2010)

Do you think perception is reality? I do not think perception is reality. A lot of people perceive things that are not reality. Almost everyone sometimes perceives different things. Everyone has their own way of perceiving things and there are a lot of people in the world.

A long time ago the difference between perception and reality was defined as the act of understanding in contrast to the act of being real. Reality could be tricky; most of us including myself depending on scenarios of our lives tend to give in to ideas which are not applicable to reality as a whole. Optical Illusions fool your brain by seamlessly, making your brain think that something still, is actually moving. This is a prime example of your brain just perceiving, and not actually seeing the reality of the image. Seeing is not believing because your eyes see things that are different than what is actually happening. This can happen due to many reasons such as, letting your emotions cloud your own judgment, seeing an optical illusion, or even not adding up the details and failing to realize what is actually going on. Seeing isn't believing, believing isn't seeing. Think about it- lots of people haven't physically seen Antarctica but know it exists. Sometimes people don't have to physically see something to believe what is happening around them. Certain actions lead to different beliefs and different ways of interpreting things.

The line separating reality and the illusion of reality is a blur. The line separating the narrator’s self-aware expression and his story telling is a blur. The line separating Ambrose and the narrator is a blur. All of this may blur understanding. It is clear, however, that these blurs exist because of the “funhouse”. A funhouse, Lost in the funhouse, in which exist other funhouses. Various funhouses exist in the story and in the writing. For this reason, the title Lost in the funhouse is very significant.

There are many situations in life which are related to reality and they can be illusional because of your own perspective. a quote that supports this is “ Reality is that which, when you stop believing it, doesn’t go away”. This quote explains that reality is something that even if you don’t believe in it or if you don’t think its true it still doesn’t go away. You can’ deny the fact that that fact is true no matter what. You can make a situation unreal just because of the way you think or you don’t want to face the truth. There are four different sources of knowledge: perception, introspection, reason and memory. All our knowledge roots from our perception. Perception is the way humans sense the world outside the body. We perceive through our five senses: see, hear, smell, taste, and touch. Humans gain knowledge through experiences and experience through perception. Usually we can trust our senses to perceive our surroundings effectively but there are times we misperceive. Illusions, hallucinations or impediments of the accurate flow of information to our senses are examples of misperceptions. For example if someone hits their head causing their vision to blur or impedes them from effectively processing what occurring around them, then they shouldn’t trust their senses. Another example would be an anxiety attack causing a signal of threat to the brain also preventing the person from correctly processing their surroundings. If nothing can prove we are misperceiving then we have good reason to be believe our senses.

Our environment and the people we are around shape our perception of what is real. Reality is our grip of what is true and false, right and wrong, what is real and what is not. So reality can be distorted by our belief in it. We can sincerely believe something is right, but be sincerely wrong.

“Reason is the illusion of reality.” A quote from Hazrat Inayan Khan, the founder of The Sufi Order in the West in 1914 and teacher of Universal Sufism. People do accept reality but when they start to find a reason of their reality, illusion happens. The meaning of reality is the world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them. On the other hand, illusion is defined as a thing that is or is likely to be wrongly perceived or interpreted by the senses. There are a lot of reasons why people often go back and forth between the reality and illusion. When a person have an illusion, it does not simply means that he/she cannot accept the reality, however, it may be because the person wants to feel more about the reality.
