THE EFFECT OF PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS
There are many athletes that have confirmed positive for performance enhancing drugs (PED’s), which are also commonly referred to as a process called “doping.” Competitors use medications such as stimulants, human growth hormone, anabolic steroids, supplements and other methods to help them elevate their performance. The reasons many chose to “dope” are obvious; more strength/quickness leads to better performance, recognition and can often lead to bigger contracts and endorsements. These drugs increase energy, stamina, provide quicker recovery and muscle mass and can prolong careers or provide quicker recovery after injuries. However almost every sport you can think of has been marred by these abuses

Different forms of testing are done in most all sports, but users spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to conceal the drug use. The mindset of many of the users is that they need an edge to get, or keep a position, recover from an injury, or extend a career. The methods and types of drugs used can depend on the results desired or testing protocols, and are sometimes highly sophisticated cocktails or combinations of several drugs designed to mask any trace of the drug in the users system. For example, many baseball players used steroids because it makes them quicker, faster and stronger, some athletes have been known to take the drugs between innings. Some drugs can even provide testosterone enhancement, such as bioidentical and synthetic hormones, which can enhance overall physical performance in a myriad of activities. Although synthetic hormones do not yield as many harmful side effects as bioidentical, they are both methods of enhancing physical activity. Some of the drugs, such as stimulants (which have been around, and abused for decades) not only deliver strength or higher muscle mass, they can even improve energy and vitality for normal, everyday, activities; which is why they can become so …show more content…
Further, if an athlete won a title during the time of their steroids, they risk being stripped of the title, medals and records. The MLB was accused of “looking the other way” when popular players Barry Bonds, and Mark McGuire, Sammy Sosa were setting all-time records in the mid-to-late 1990’s, but it still took until 2005 for the MLB to implement strict testing. Lance Armstrong won 7 Tour De France titles, but was later stripped of all titles and records due to his drug use and
Over the years, this has been forgotten as people focus only on winning. From 1968 on, hundreds of Olympic athletes have been caught doping. PED’s are considered cheating in today’s sports. Although every athlete is determined to win, PED’s have no place in sports. When athletes resort to using these drugs, the endanger their health and their safety. An example of this is the death of Danish cyclist Knud Enemark Jensen who died in the Olympics from the use of amphetamines which caused him to lose consciousness and fall from his bicycle to his death. Another consequence of PED use is setting a bad example and being a bad role model. In 2007 many fans were let down when Barry Bonds tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. Many fans, both young and old, looked up to Barry and were disappointed with his choices. With so many baseball players using performance-enhancing drugs today, the integrity of the game has been lost. The players who use PED’s negatively affect the players who play the game without cheating. One of the worst consequences of all for using PED’s is being suspended or banned. Since the 1960’s, the technology for PED testing has improved and more athletes have been caught, suspended or
Drugs, they are a wonder of medicine. They can be very helpful, but they can also be very dangerous .Some athletes use peds, (performance enhancing drugs) for muscular growth and or endurance and an example of them are anabolic steroids. They give the user more muscular endurance and growth so they can work out longer and grow more muscle in a shorter amount of time. These drugs are used in athletics to help the athletes win and have pretty bad symptoms, not only that but it is unfair to the rest of the competition for them to have that kind of advantage. athletes usually are compelled to use drugs because they want to win at all costs.this, win at all cost, mentality is a reason why athletes use PEDs.we need to improve the regulations of peds in sports.
In reality athletes are using sport enhancement drugs to gain an edge on performance, make more money and gain quicker results in their profession. If athletes are found using sports enhancing drugs they could be fined, stripped of metals, trophies and face suspension. But ultimately their name is ruined because there’re known for cheating. Mark McGwire admitted to using a sport enhancing drug when he broke the single season home run record in 1998(Cons). There was so much controversy over him cheating, it impacted him negatively. With the career he had, he was supposed to make the hall of fame, but due to cheating he still hasn’t got inducted. This should change because he broke
The growth and use of performance enhancing drugs makes them no longer a taboo subject among professional athletes, and is starting to become in fact rampant among athletes. There appears to be no end in sight when leagues like the NFL and NCAA have weak testing programs.
Artifice; the chicanery committed everywhere yet perceived by so few. Unfortunately, easily deceived Americans have engendered a reality replete with this phony yet prevalent skill pinpointed in numerous aspects of today’s society. In his book Empire of Illusions, Chris Hedges argues that “the most essential skill . . . is artifice,” ranging from political theater to consumer culture. In Hedges’ quote, essentiality is best defined as unfortunate but necessary, as artifice causes undesirable effects on a person's conscience. Although the idea of artifice is exceptionally useful and even imperative in many political, economical, and cultural spheres, gun control politics are a prime exception. In present day America, the controversial topic
The main belief among young athletes is that by using drugs (especially performance-enhancing drugs), they will gain a competitive advantage among the competition. However, no matter the purpose, taking steroids or other drugs not prescribed by a physician is illegal and needs to be closely monitored at all levels of athletics. Some people might believe that mandatory drug testing would cause turmoil
Athletes partaking in performance enhancing drugs is another sport specific risk behaviour to achieve victory. Taking performance enhancing drugs gives an extra edge and is a short cut to good performance. It allows one to perform under any circumstances. In fact, stimulants are the most common types of drugs that are misused. Stimulants reduce tiredness and pain. Further, it increases endurance and explosive power due to the reduction of pain. The earliest reasons for the use of stimulants is because of the restricting barriers to pain. Nevertheless, this causes more injuries as they are pushing their bodies past what they are physically capable of. However, they are not aware of this because at the time the athlete is no responsive to pain.
Some athletes that have used performance enhancing drugs have not suffered the medical consequences but have suffered in another way. One of the most famous player in all of baseball Alex Rodriguez had won the American league most valuable
There has been a debate of epic proportion for the past few decades on whether professional athletes from around the world have the right to use performance-enhancing drugs. As for now these world athletes are not permitted to use most of the performance-enhancing drugs that are available by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The athletes are randomly tested by their professional leagues. Each American league has their own method of dealing with athletes who abuse banned substances. These methods of punishment can range from a fine to expulsion from the league.
Steroid use is ever present in the world of professional sports and is making its way down to the collegiate and high school levels. A large reason that PED use in professional sports is because the testing process is so poor. Many athletes, including boxing megastar Mike Tyson, have come forward after their career on their use of PED and even other drugs. Mike admitted to using urine other than his own to pass the tests. “However the existing testing program may have put too much emphasis on quantity and may have neglected quality. The above mentioned 1.76% of “findings” is in contrast to widespread belief that at least 10% of all elite athletes are doping” (Maennig, 2014, p. 1202). This emphasizes the fact that the current tests in place are more worried about testing larger
Using performance- enhancing drugs has become the major part of any athletic life since the early Greek time. The first attempt for athletes to increase their performance was during the 8th century BC Greek Olympics, according to Wikipedia.com. It was documented that Olympians ate sheep testicles that increased their energy. Later, scientists confirmed that this strange method was very effective (wikipedia). However, lets look at the time that is a little closer to us, and we can see the bright headlines, “Doping has been acknowledged as a problem since at least 1960” or “95% of players in the NFL use a performance enhancing drug such as steroid”. It seems horrifying. Is it a competition of pharmacologists? Some athletes have become so addicted

Performance enhancing drugs, or steroids, are defined as substances used to improve physical performance. There are many types of steroidal performance enhancers. The first of these performance enhancing drugs are anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are also known as androgen steroids, and they are used to increase the muscle mass and strength of a person. A natural anabolic steroid is testosterone, which your body naturally produces. Some athletes take straight testosterone which is another way to boost your athletic performance. This has the same effect as anabolic steroids, but it is natural and can be found within the body. Anabolic steroids are so effective and appealing to athletes, because they allow athletes to recover faster from a
Performance-enhancing drugs (PED 's) have been an issue for many decades now for the medical and sports field. Olympic and professional athletes have been using them to gain an upper hand on the competition, but some may ask if it 's really worth it? Studies show that performance-enhancing drugs have been proven to negatively affect the health of athletes who take them. Simply put, performance-enhancing drugs could either improve athletic performance or can be extremely dangerous, in certain situations, deadly. There have been strict rules and drug testing in the professional sporting organizations, as well as in world competitions. For example, in the summer of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, in two of the
In New Zealand, this year the laws surrounding drugs in sport have been updated so that they are now at the same standard of those of the World Anti-Doping Agency's 2015 world anti-doping code. This meant increasing the penalty of those caught using performance enhancing drugs from a 2 year ban to 4 years for first time offenders. This means that an athlete that is caught using drugs at the Olympics, they will miss the next one. The laws have also been changed so that all supporting staff/team members of the athlete are subject to these laws as well and therefore they can receive banes as well. They also extended the consequences to anyone who tries to cover up any doping that is occurring. These law changes were set in place to
