The novel, Perks of being a Wallflower, displays an adventurous journey of a high school freshman growing up into the world. Written by Stephen Chbosky, a teenager named Charlie struggles to make friends and enjoy his high school experience. Throughout the story, he creates and breaks new bonds between diverse and special characters. The main theme of Perks of being a Wallflower is growing up. However, under this theme, there are multiple subcategories. For example, within the theme of growing up, Charlie meets new people, experiences changes within his family, gains new friends, and developed advanced literary abilities. To begin, one of the most prominent part of growing up is the influence of other people. Most of Charlie’s decisions happen in the plot of the story. Near the beginning of the book he has no friends in the first week of high school, throughout the plot Charlie gains multiple. The plot of a book is the sequence or events that happen throughout the story. An example of a major plot point in the story is when he meets a boy in shop class, referred to as “Nothing.” …show more content…
The main conflict of the story is while he is dating a girl named Mary Elizabeth, he kisses Sam. Sam is Nothing’s step sister. When the two teens were introduced to Charlie at the football game, him and Sam had an instant connection. That night he writes, “I would really like to ask Sam on a date someday. I really would. She is so nice” (pg 21). Charlie characterizes same as very beautiful and nice. Characterization plays a big role in the book as well. Chbosky creates a clear picture of each character in the story through Charlie’s letters. Even though the descriptions aren’t as advanced, because of Charlie’s age, he still is able to create vivid imagery. For example,”Sam has brown hair and very very pretty green eyes. The kind of green that doesn’t make a big deal about itself” (pg
‘If people were rain, I was a drizzle and she was a hurricane.’ Miles Halters feelings about his what he thinks is the love of his life Alaska Young in John Greens Looking for Alaska could quite easily be mistaken for words spoken by Charlie about secret love Sam in the popular film adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower directed by the writer of the book Stephen Chbosky. Both Green and Chbosky chose to place their young protagonists in confronting yet relatable situations in which they must confront death and love all while struggling their way through high school at the same time which not only impacts themselves but those close to them as well. Both books enlighten the readers with the important themes of emotional sanity, love and belonging.
The storyline of Charlie Brown is focused on a very small social circle of young children. One of the main animated character is Charlie Brown who has various insecurities. The author made a common connection between himself and the character. He was a child who others preyed on and made a mockery out of. The comical was used as an example of a great American un-success story, where the character failed at everything he attempted to do. Charlie Brown was always prone to bad luck.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is the story of a unique high school student named Charlie and his journey of self-discovery throughout his freshman year. Charlie’s personality changes drastically from the beginning of the book to the end of it; and this is what I want to focus on. First I am going to detail Charlie’s personality at the beginning of the book and then use Erik Erikson’s theory of Psychosocial Development, Kohlberg’s theory of Moral Development, Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development and an article about adolescent bulling to analyze them. I will then use examples from the book and film to illustrate his growth in the respected areas. Through these major theories of psychology I will show Charlie’s evolution from a wallflower to a human being.
In the text,”Charles” it states, “The teacher spanked a boy, though”. This is a important part of the story because it is the first time the Charles was brought up which starts the story. But if this setting wasn’t how it is the story would be different and the events that happened may have not happened. Also in the story it states, “He kicked the teachers friend¨ This shows that Charles is not a good student and is alway acting up. To sum it up, the Charles the the little boy is talking about is always acting up and getting
The book and the movie for The Perks of Being a Wallflower are extremely different, and I believe that the movie is much better than the book. The book is written much differently than the movie. There are lots of scenes that are in the book but not in the movie and that are in the movie not the book. The movie focuses less on the bigger, depressing topics than the book does. The characters in the movie are also much different than they are in the book. Their personalities are very different in the movie than the author described them as in the book.
Movies are constantly created by producers and writers to convey a particular meaning to their audience they are reaching out too. The meaning can be interpreted in several ways. For example, one can understand the meaning that was intended by the creators, or it could be an individual’s own understanding of a storyline in the movie. As a movie can be viewed through different perspectives, a dominant male named Louis Althusser created the theory of Interpellation and the Role of ISAs and RSAs to help further understand movies. Althusser’s theory explains that people in power will remain in power and others will be controlled by those in power (Hartt-Fournier, Lecture 2). Furthermore, the role of ISA, known as the Ideological State
Charlie is mocked and bullied at school, and nobody wants to be friend with him. He is counting down the days he has left since the first day of high school. He eats alone, walks alone, and he is invisible. Even though, his family care about him and support him, he doesn’t share anything with them. Until he meets Mr. Anderson, his English teacher. He sees the potential in Charlie, and encourages him to read and write, as well as participate in the outside world. Later on, he becomes friend of Patrick and Sam. Sooner, he is introduced into their world, a group of people of punks, film buffs, goths, music lovers, stoners, and writers. He goes to the party where he
Sociology is the scientific study of being behavior in human groups (Schaefer). There are very many examples of sociology in the movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but I view alienation, deviance, and gender roles to be the most prominent. This movie is about the struggles of a teenage boy named Charlie’s freshman year of high school. Charlie is seen as a social outcast and he just barely makes it through the year with the help of his best friends Sam and Patrick. Throughout the movie Charlie experiences most of the basic struggles of starting high school and some. This movie is very relateable since it gives a more realistic view of high school for some people. Charlie , and the audience, learns the importance of love and friendship in growing up in today’s society.
The book is aa coming of age letter-style novel written by Stephen Chbosky. This is the story of a fifteen-year-old male teen going through changes in his life. Charlie has an older brother and sister, but is still quite coy. He finds friends in Sam and Patrick, whom introduce Charlie to their buddies, and goes to parties with them. He goes through different types of relations with these people, being their friend to not socializing with them, because they were upset with Charlie, to ultimately reuniting as friends, writing all these thoughts to an unknown pen-pal.
“Things change, friends leave. And life doesn't stop for anybody” The novel The Perks Of Being A Wallflower can be perceived as a coming of age novel as the main protagonist Charlie blooms into adulthood. This novel was written by Stephen Chbosky and narrated by Charlie as he writes a series of letters that are written to a ‘friend’ who remains anonymous. This allows the reader to delve into Charlie’s mind and go with him on his journey through freshman high school year. Charlie has two best friends, Sam and Patrick (both seniors) who really help push Charlie out of his comfort zone and influence him to participate in life.
In the novel, the characters seem to break each other’s hearts in sort of a domino or cycle pattern and it’s all focused on one character. This character is Charlie and he has had a crush on one girl named Sam for the entirety of the book since she is introduced, but he’s very nervous and shy when he is around her. After he begins to get comfortable around Sam, she begins to realize that he is interested in her. Even Though she leads him on by kissing him, Sam isn’t actually interested in Charlie the way that he thinks she is. Sam only sees a friendship in Charlie, while he sees more and he -wants to be with her. Sam claims that there is an age gap that makes her believe that she couldn’t be with him. While Sam sees this age gap and uses it as an excuse, her friend, Mary Elizabeth, likes Charlie and wants to be with him. Charlie thinks that Mary Elizabeth is a very pretty girl, but she doesn’t measure up to Sam. once Charlie and Mary Elizabeth have officially
From the start, Charlie was the definition of innocence. His whole personality wreaks of it. Chbosky shows you that Charlie doesn’t always understand the others around him, he is extremely smart and talented but he doesn’t really “get” people. You see
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a novel about coming of age that is seen through the perspective of Charlie, a young ‘wallflower’ that is starting high school and experiences the troublesome teenage life filled with drugs, sexuality and love. Charlie writes this book in a series of letters to an anonymous person. Charlie is the main protagonist of the story who is apprehensive and a kind-hearted boy however he has many problems happening in his life that he doesn’t like to concern others with “I just don’t want you to worry about me, or think you’ve met me, or waste your time anymore”. I admire Charlie because he is very considerate of others and although he is shy he overcomes this fear when he tries to find friends and step out of his comfort zone” Normally I am very shy, but (Patrick) seemed like the kind of guy you could just walk up to at a football game even though you were three years younger and not popular”. In return Charlie is rewarded with his first real friend at high school. I also admire Charlie for his mature attitude towards finding new friends and moving on from the death of his friend Michael. Charlie really needed to start interacting more with people, during the story we find out that Charlie misses having a friend and that being alone can be difficult and cause negative effects “It would be very nice to have a friend again. I would like that even more than a date”. I think
The topic of this benchmark is irrelevant because if a parent wants to control what their child learns in school then they can homeschool them, and if they make any excuse of why not to then they are admitting that the school that they are currently at is more suited to better teach the child. This means that they are admitting that the stuff they don't like about the curriculum is still better suited for teaching the child because it is a part of the better system.
Everyone has a movie that helped them through a specific time in their life. Either they watched it over and over again, or it was related to what they are going through. Perks of Being a Wallflower is the movie that influences me the most. This movie is continuing to help me deal with my journey of being in high school. I relate to Perks of Being a Wallflower because I was a scared freshman, watched my senior friends graduate, and now I am the older sister to a freshman.
