Have you ever taken a look at any other lifestyle besides yours? Well Marjane Satrapi has always lived in Iran, and she is pretty used to her lifestyle. If anything, Marjane is now trying to understand the changes in her lifestyle and why it’s happening. Marjane Satrapi’s understanding of the lifestyle in Iran is affected by three things: imperialism, social classes, and religion.
The first photo demonstrates imperialism because the girl playing with the dolls represents a bigger country that is controlling smaller countries (the dolls). The definition of imperialism is “the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies.” The dolls have to be …show more content…

In her story her country Iran is being taken over by Iraq. The people of Iraq are coming in and telling everyone how they need to live their lives. In the book Persepolis, imperialism is represented because Iraq is trying to take over Iran and they can’t do anything but fight back as hard as they can. An example of this is on page 15, when the movie theatre is put up in flames. The book says in the bottom frame “The BBC said there were 400 victims. The Shah said that a group of Religious fanatics perpetrated the Massacre. But the people knew that it was the Shah's fault.” This is an example on Imperialism because it is showing that because Iraq is coming in and taking over, if the people don’t listen bad things will happen. The definition of religion is “a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.” This picture relates to Marjane’s life because where Marjane lives is all based around her religion. The way they dress, what goes on in their homes, and what they can and cannot obey. In the book Persepolis, religion is represented when Marjane went out of the house wearing a jean jacket and sneakers and got taken to the police station. By doing this, Marjane could have been executed. An example of this is on page 6 when Marjane does not know what she thinks of the new veil that every girl had to wear. She says in the top left frame on page 6, “I really didn’t know what to think of the veil, deep down was very religious but as a family we were very modern and avant-garde.” This shows religion in the book because Marjane’s religion, makes the veil is a big part of what the girls have to wear in their everyday lives. Religion is definitely one of the big things that affect Marjane’s life, because the guidelines they have to follow basically tell them that they either live their life this way or they shall be shamed
