Confinement, Oppression and Rebellious Nature in Persepolis. by Joonyoon Tan In the book Persepolis authored by Marjane Satrapi, she writes about her life experiences growing up in the midst of a revolution in Iran which involves war and oppression not only to the Iranian’s lifestyle choices but also to the religious beliefs of the people. Marjane lives in a society where freedom is taken away and one certain religion is forced upon them, what she wears, where she goes and what she does is tightly restricted and constrained. Being a rebellious, independent, determined and strong-willed person she is, she finds it difficult to live by the strict rules and obligations that were forced on her, particularly involving a woman’s rights which was affected largely by the Islamic regulation …show more content…

In the beginning chapters, Marjane’s parents supported political movements by joining demonstrations against the forced rules for every woman to wear the veil during the Islamic revolution in the year 1980, which portrays the freedom of speech. Marjane at such young age was forced to conform to their government’s ideologies for the society, and to adapt to harsh environments with war and bloodshed. To live in a democratic and civilized country like Malaysia means that the citizens of Malaysia have freedom of speech and should know our rights. For instance, recently a Pro-citizen movement rally was held not only nationwide but also all over parts of the world. ‘BERSIH4’ was successfully held peacefully without any chaos or bloodshed which usually happens in rallies in other countries. These rallies were supported by citizens of Malaysia to speak out for the future of the country, to save the country’s economy and balance after the spreading scandals of the Prime Minister’s act of corruption being uncovered, people lost trust in his rule and show their rejection by joining the
