The media only reports the barbarity and atrocities of countries experiencing turmoil, ignoring the lives and achievements of the people who live inside. This ignorance removes the humanity of the people living inside these isolated nations. One of these countries is Iran. News outlets frequently show Iran as a primitive and vile nation where everyone is an Islamic terrorist ready to strike. In reality, many of the citizens of Iran want to live a normal life and the children are no different. Marjane Satrapi captures her experience as a child growing up in revolutionary-era Iran through her graphic novel Persepolis. The book follows ten year old Satrapi with her wealthy parents in the capital city of Tehran. The people overthrow the king of Iran, the Shah, and eventually religious extremists take control. Their subsequent tyrannical and conservative rule of Iran contradict Marjane’s family’s progressive values. In her graphic novel Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi writes about her growth from an addled child into an expressive young woman through the recognition of her own values. Marjane starts as a conflicted child during the climax of the Iranian revolution due to the conflicting values of the government and her parents. Once the revolutionaries establish a theocracy in Iran, they quickly implement Sharia Law.
