We have all been in situations where we had to survive. Whether it is school, family issues, or even death we have all survived something. But what does it take to survive? There are many attributes we use to survive like hope, guts, and resilience. But the one that is most used and most important is perseverance. Perseverance is needed to survive because if you don’t persevere than you won’t be successful and you won’t be able to get anywhere. You need to try to be a better person because of what you have been through which takes perseverance. Eugene Black, Heinz Skyte, and Edith Goldberg are some people who have been through some tough situations and survived. They have all been in the Holocaust and had to see and experience some life scarring events but they all got through it because they persevered. …show more content…
He had three sisters, one brother, and parents. But one day he was returning home from school was surprised to see a German military lorry outside his home with his two sisters and father on it. His mother eventually joined the rest of the family, but the German soldiers had to use force to get her on. An SS man slapped her across the face and pushed her onto the lorry. Eugene, like the rest of his family, was forced onto the lorry. They were dropped off at Auschwitz Birkenau. He was completely showered, shaved and given a number 55546. After about ten days of arriving at Auschwitz Birkenau he was chosen for slave labor. The Germans sent Eugene to Buchenwald and then to Dora Mittelbau where slaves made rockets underground. Eugenes job was to carry rocks to trucks for twelve to fourteen hours a day. Because he had very little food and was not in good health he got pneumonia after five months of being in Dora Mittelbau but a doctor later cured him. He was released from the camp and later decided to join the British
He had been to many labor camps for five years and seven months. If he had stayed at a labor camp called Stalag VIII, he would’ve starved to death like the Russian POWs did. He was forced to work on the Autobahn near Krems, Austria. The Jews were given the most dirtiest and the most dangerous jobs. Their lives were threatened, they were beaten, and they were always hungry.
Eugene saw an SS man hit his mother across the face and push her on to the lorry. When Eugene arrived at his house he was not allowed in and was forced onto the lorry with the rest of his family and other Jewish people from the ghetto. The Jewish population was being forcibly gathered together to a nearby brickyard. Eugene and his family were ordered into railway cattle trucks and from there transported to Auschwitz Birkenau. After being shaved bald and showering Eugene was given his number 55546 and his striped uniform. Eugene was then separated from his sister's, mother, and then also his
They drifted for 47 days before they were taken to a hospital and questioned before being transferred to Execution Island. There they were treated without dignity and their food was served to them on the ground and they were poked with sticks. After a while he was transferred to Ofuna.
Humility. Courage. Resilience. These are things you need to survive through tough times in life. Through resilience, we can learn from our past to grow our communities in the spirit of a hopeful future by being humble and courageous.
thousands of Jews, but he was arrested two years later and taken to Auschwitz. While he was
Determination When faced with problems, the people with determination are the ones who solve and vanquish it. After a catastrophic event, there are always people who live to tell the tale. Many of these survivors used their determination to survive against physical, mental, and emotional hardships. Elie Wiesel, Paul Rusesabagina, and John F. Kennedy are examples of this. In the memoirs, Night by Elie Wiesel and An Ordinary Man by Paul Rusesabagina, and the article, “Sixty Years Later, the Story of PT-109 Still Captivates” by Stephen Plotkin, Elie Wiesel, Paul Rusesabagina, and John F. Kennedy were intent on staying alive in times where it was easier to give up.
The first way the underlying lesson of perseverance is proven is through Wiesel’s actions. Elie Wiesel displayed perseverance in the face of adversity several times with his action. Throughout the whole story Wiesel continued to work hard to survive despite how difficult it was. One great example occurs during their run to Gleiwitz, when malnourished Wiesel runs over 40 miles in the
Perseverance is the ability to keep fighting for what you believe in. But what is the extent of this? How far would you go to defend your opinion? How many supporters do you need? 100. What is the difference between a 100? 50.
Alaa Khalil Ms. VanSchaik English 10H 06 March 2024 Survival How are some people able to overcome every difficult situation they encounter? Is it a motivational one? Perseverance. The need to be alive? Whatever it may be, everyone handles situations differently, which also includes their thought process during and after the situation.
One example, is when Mattie wanted to give Nell away to the orphanage because it would be easier, she persevered and decided it would be better for Nell if Mattie kept her. This shows, that sometimes it might be harder to persevere, but its better in the long run. Another reason, is when Mattie was at the coffeehouse with Grandpa and they got robbed, she thought about just sitting there and letting them take all of their stuff, but she persevered and chases them away. This proves, that when you persevere you will get rewards, which in Mattie’s case was not getting robbed. As you can see, persevering is better, even though giving up is
Although, it seems like many who succeed, who’ve fought through unconquerable situations, were able to keep fighting through the power of love and the will to fight back. Holocaust survivors can undeniably be considered experts in the battle against death and the struggle to stay alive. One example is Elie Wiesel, a Romanian-born Jewish writer and
It is a concept that has been shown to me by my parents’ struggles throughout their lives. My dad persevered to get where he is today. He grew up fairly poor and was determined to make a better life for himself, so he didn’t let anything get in the way. Even when he was eighteen living in a dilapidated nine dollar hotel and hanging power lines in the bitter Iowan winter, he didn’t give up. He said that even though he felt hopeless, he knew he had to preserve. Perseverance is not giving up when facing struggles and my dad is the embodiment of that concept. By my dad persevering through his struggles, he showed me that I cannot let obstacles be my demise. Another person who has displayed perseverance in my life is my mom. When I was about four, my loving, caring grandma died. This greatly affected my mom, but even though she was in pain she put on a brave face for me and my brother, and I think that this is a great example of perseverance. This also makes me want to be brave and have perseverance when I face challenges in my own life because if she got through hard times in her life then I can too. The people around me have shaped my idea of perseverance by the way that they have displayed it in their
Eli: (H) Are you strong enough to push your body to the limit and not give up?(B) That is what it takes to survive.(T) In the stories Most Dangerous Game, Trapped, and My escape from North Korea all three main characters had three characteristics that helped them survive. For example, they sometimes would hand the prisoners a bar of soap so they would think that were actually going to take a shower. Usually in this case they were just led to the gas chambers. In these gas chambers, a form of Zyklon B was dropped in there, and once it made contact with air it changed to the gas form. After this, the bodies of the dead were taken to the crematoriums. Jewish prisoners were given the jobs of transferring the deceased bodies to the crematoriums. Every day many died. Almost one million people were killed in Auschwitz alone.
What is perseverance? Perseverance is the ability to go on when things seem hopeless. It is also a measure of success, or at least how much sacrifice one is willing to make in the name of success. As students, it is impossible to achieve personal success without having a goal, or direction. The goal and direction that often propels us to achieve is perseverance. Perseverance is the ability to forge ahead despite setbacks that threaten to undermine all efforts to succeed.
