In the story A Long Walk To Water, written by Linda Sue Park, one theme of the story is perseverance. Both Salva and Nya face hardships, but no matter how hard their lives are, they keep going. Perseverance is an important theme to A Long Walk To Water. The first example of Perseverance is when the war broke out, and Slava ran away from his village for safety, wondering if he will ever see his family again. Salva still kept walking thinking how his family would have been proud. The second example of Perseverance is when Mariel disappeared and was thought to be dead. Salva was heartbroken that now his only friend was gone, but fought through the sorrow and kept going toward his goal, knowing Mariel would have done the same.
In the book A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park, Salvas home country is in the middle of the civil war and it reaches his village, he must flee and leave his family at only 11 years old. Now he must walk with the other Dinka tribe members through Ethiopia, southern Sudan, and Kenya in search of somewhere safe to stay. They face many hardships such as trying to find food and water to supply a whole tribe everyday. And also walking through the burning hot desert day after day. Perseverance is important in the book because Salva has to keep a open mindset and still stay hopeful through all of the challenges he faces.
The first parallel that can be drawn between the book and society that supports the theme of perseverance is tied together by the parallel of being brave enough to put yourself on the line for what you believe in. He does this in search of the base his mother is being held captive at, and is being helped by his electroclan partners. In the process of saving his

Perseverance is an important theme in A Long Walk to Water. Salva has to persevere through his doubt, pain, and fear. One example of Salva showing perseverance is when he doubts that his family is alive. He realizes that they would have wanted him to live so he puts his sadness behind him and decides to move on. This shows that Salva perseveres through doubt and that he is persistent. Another example is when Salva decides to keep walking and pushing through the pain of his chipped nail and thorns in his feet. This proves that Salva perseveres through pain and he is determined. Perseverance A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park is a dual narrative about a civil war in Sudan between the Nuer and Dinka Tribes. It shows the hardships that a child from both tribes live their every day. Thomas Edison once said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to succeeding when they gave up”. This quote reminds me of the hardships Salva faces. Though he faces many hardships he doesn’t stop.
When drastic times occur and sweep one of everything they own, do they have a plan of action? Will they be prepared for a life without power, resources, and stability? Many times when people are faced with this situation they find themselves unprepared and unable to live in such conditions. They lose the connections with the world, the water they drink is likely to get contaminated, and the scarcity of goods is a threat to themselves and anyone left alive. Everywhere around them there is death and destruction leaving them isolated in their own dystopia. Pat Frank’s Alas, Babylon illustrates a nuclear bomb simulation. In such a way, he gives the readers a taste of isolation and survival needs when facing such drastic times.
