Perseverance The short story By the Waters of Babylon written by Stephan Benét has three main points that relate to the theme of perseverance; when Jon disobeys the rules, he decides to cross the river and discovers that the east should not be forbidden. Jon starts to head east, and express his dilemma when he states “My heart was troubled about going east, yet I knew that I must go.” (Benet 85). Going east is forbidden and you are punished if you go to the there. But Jon must follow his gut feeling and go where his feels is right. Jon starts to head east and comes across obstacles that could interfere with his journey “I do not know the customs of rivers—we are the People of the Hills. I tried to guide my raft with the pole but it spun around.”
