The Million Dollar Baby was one of the most anticipated movies for the year as the movie was based around a female boxer, and at the time this wasn’t very common. I was also very excited to watch Clint Eastwood as he is one of my most favorite actor/director.
The movie was not directly relatable as in I have not gone through a similar experience. Although, many of the emotions the characters were feeling and the different situations they were put through were relatable to me, to a certain extent. During the scenes where Maggie is seeking Frankie’s expertise, it brought up memories of my past. It reminded me of the days when I would spend countless hours on the field with my dad playing soccer, running drills, etc. It gave me the memory of how keen I was on becoming the best, just like Maggie was.

Maggie is full of drive on becoming the best she can be as a boxer. Her determination to die with dignity is also seen, along with her relentless boxing dreams. Frankie also presents this as he keeps reaching out to his daughter with letters even if it means that the letters are coming back to him unopened. Perseverance can be present in everyone, whether it’d be to find a new job, make the basketball team, or maybe start a new family. I connected so much with that aspect of the film that I felt like I wanted to start a new passion or activity where I would have to invest a lot of time and perseverance in so that I can come out feeling victorious after achieving what I set out to do. I felt like I was a part of Frankie’s team and that I was with Maggie during all the training sessions, workouts, and fights. Inside it felt like the team had my back and were supporting me as well during the
Paper #2 The book a Thousand Pieces of Gold is about perseverance. Perseverance is when one overcomes a hardship, endures through it, and accomplishes it in the end. Perseverance can help one through numerous types of situations and endure things they may not have thought possible while giving them the strength to achieve the next problem. Lalu persevered many obstacles in the book a Thousand Pieces of Gold, which allowed her to conquer the next difficult situation.
In the book A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park, Salvas home country is in the middle of the civil war and it reaches his village, he must flee and leave his family at only 11 years old. Now he must walk with the other Dinka tribe members through Ethiopia, southern Sudan, and Kenya in search of somewhere safe to stay. They face many hardships such as trying to find food and water to supply a whole tribe everyday. And also walking through the burning hot desert day after day. Perseverance is important in the book because Salva has to keep a open mindset and still stay hopeful through all of the challenges he faces.
Maggie strives to be improve her community and assist her people. She has devoted her life to their rehabilitation by earning a degree from Dartmouth to be able to organize local control of the schools and form a women's shelter. After this inspiration had shocked Ray, he comes to yearn for the same connection she has with her people as he never got chance for isolating that part of himself.
I watched “42” this weekend. The movie is based on a few years in Jackie Robinson’s life as the first Black man to enter Major League Baseball. It was amazing.
During the 1930s, discrimination against African Americans was extremely prominent in southern towns. These towns characterized African Americans using different archetypes despite their actual personality, which widened the gap between the two races. In her book To Kill A Mockingbird, author Harper Lee uses the character of Tom Robinson to show how said archetypes against African Americans provides justification for racial mistreatment for white southerners. In the book, Tom Robinson, an African American man, is accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell. Atticus, his appointed lawyer, finds many faults in Mayella's case, saying, “ I am confident that you gentlemen will review without passion the evidence you have
The author portrays the message and theme of persistence, resilience, and grit throughout the entire story. We understand
The movie I chose to watch is Courageous. The precipitating event in this movie is the car accident that takes the life of Emily Mitchell. Her father, Adam Mitchell, and the rest of her family are traumatized by the sudden death of their 9 year old daughter/sister. In thinking about information that would be gained in the first contact with Adam Mitchell, one thing that stands out about his previous state of mind/functioning is that he was somewhat uninvolved with his children, taking them for granted. This fact can also be a trigger for how he processes this event, causing a crisis for him as he realized his
How many times in life have you struggled but got through a difficult time? That is called perseverance. The definition of perseverance is “Steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.” Synonyms are persistence and determination. It originated from the latin word perseverare. Right now the world has been filled with natural disasters, from hurricanes to wildfires. Everyone that this affected has been forced to persevere through it because there is not much that they have the ability to do besides staying strong. In all of the nonfiction literature we have read there were many different examples of perseverance from many different people. I decided to choose three. For my first example Melba Pattillo Beals from “Warriors Don’t Cry”. There is numerous examples of the Little Rock 9 and her doing something despite difficulty. For the second example of perseverance I chose Maya Angelou. Through her life there were countless times that she was faced adversity and still achieved success. My third example is Earl Simmons (DMX) from the book “E.A.R.L”. He went through a tough time at almost all time growing up and he never gave up and achieved success. Perseverance creates success; therefore, when you stick through something you can accomplish what you want.
When I stepped onto the blue mat in this new gym, I knew this was where I wanted to be. After years of dreaming of going to this gym, reality finally kicked in and I was ready to start my journey. I had cheered for five years in McKinney, Texas and I started out loving it. That gym made me realize cheer was my sport. The reason I loved it so much was because of my coach, Raul. He was like a brother to me and pushed me to do my best and try new things even when I was worn out and felt like giving up.
The decision that Frankie made had a huge impact on his relationship with God, self and others. First, after helping Maggie die, Frankie felt a disconnection from God. His relationship with God would never be the same again, since he had knowingly committed sin. Secondly, Frankie’s relationship with himself changed as he felt guilty for what he had
can relate to as a women and also can relate to the characters from the film.
The 1950’s was a time period were men and women came together and started a family with a white picket fence; this is a very inaccurate observation of this time period. One thing we won’t miss about the 1950’s is the gender inequality. During this period women were inferior to men, women didn’t have the same opportunities as men. According to page 31 “ Women who became pregnant specialized in raising children” were as though today women can have children and return back to working, and they also have the same chances as men. The family concept in the 1950’s was something we lack in today’s society, almost everyone was married with children in the 1950’s whereas though is less likely for people to get married today. The economy flourished there
The film, Million Dollar Baby, is a very powerful story of a young woman by the name of Maggie. While she experienced a very difficult upbringing, Maggie had never lost sight of her goals, and is living proof that anyone can overcome any obstacle that they may be faced with. Maggie’s dream was to be a professional fighter; it was a dream most girls do not share, but it was her passion. She began attending a gym owned by fighter trainer, Frankie Dunn. Dunn was well renowned in the world of fighting for his style and persistence and had brought many men into the ring with promise of a national title, but wanted nothing to do with a woman fighter. Maggie
In the film Babies, 4 infants are being observed for the first two years of their lives. Each babies comes from different culture, which shows how the various customs can impact the child’s development. Ponijao is the youngest one in his family and lives in a village in Opuwo Namibia. Bayar lives in Bayanchandmachi, Mongolia. Mari is the first child of a couple who lives in Tokyo Japan, and Hattie lives in Sans Francisco California. The film shows the babies develop cognitively, physically and socially-emotionally, during the infancy and toddler years. The Infancy and toddlerhood period is from birth to 2 years. “This period brings dramatic changes in the body and brain that support the emergence of a wide array of motor, perceptual, and intellectual capacities” (Berk & Meyers, 2016, p.6).
There is nothing ordinary in Frankie’s world, now inhabited by Eddie and Maggie. Frankie has lost his daughter’s respect and is trying to get it back. Eddie, an ex-boxing champion who has lost his eye in his final match, is now living in the gym. Maggie is maniacally obsessed with becoming a boxing champion. In a way, these diverse and complex characters are made for each other. Frankie and Maggie need one another. She seeks a mentor and trainer and he needs a person to care for in order to overcome the loss of his daughter. Eddie is there to balance the fragile relationship between Maggie and Frankie. These intricate relationships allow Clint Eastwood to treat matters of love, respect, and success insightfully and thoroughly. The main subject of the movie is the relationship between Frankie and Maggie and the tough decisions, which Frankie makes so that Maggie can fulfill her dream. As the audience sees it, it is not always easy to make the right decision. Sometimes they are so obscure and controversial that one really can’t decide what to do and which way is right. And, it becomes even more complicated when one’s decision affects not only him or her, but also a person he or she loves and cares for. In this sense, Million Dollar Baby is really about the sacrifices that people sometimes make in order to achieve success, fulfill their dreams, or care for their loved ones.
