Personal Anthem: Kayla Hietpas
Individuality: Individuality is very important in my society. I think this because people should be who they want to be. It shouldn’t matter what other people think about them. There are a lot of people who don’t do things because they are afraid of what people will think about them or say about them. I value individuality very highly because if everyone was the same and did the same things people would be boring, and boring to talk to. Individuality is very important in my society because then people could find common interests with each other, and make friends. If everyone was the same everyone would be friends with each other and I don’t think that would work out. I don’t think that would work out because it would be very boring. Also, it’s a good thing to have in a society because you can learn different things from other people. They can teach you knew lessons in life. Additionally, I think individuality is very important because it gives people the opportunity to do

Furthermore, individuality is important because people can be happy with themselves and not try to fit other people's standards. This causes people to be more satisfied in life. Which makes them have a better life, so they are generally more happy. Individuality is vital to society because it creates leaders. People who stand out in the crowd and do their own thing. Most of the time people start to follow the leaders. Which can make the society a better place. Individuality should be cherished and not shut down. Many people think it is bad or “weird” to be different, but being different is good. Being different can help change the society for the better. Like how Martin Luther King Jr. fought for African American’s rights which changed the world for the better. To conclude, individuality is a very important in my society because people should be different from each other, it can change the society for the
It brought us the Civil Right Movement to help black people get their rights and help destroy some of the cultural divides in america causing overall equal treatment . So individuality maybe seem hard and impossible but people have done great things with it. Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is a very unique novel. It encircles individualism and makes the reader think of how people can conform to society and do as they are told without knowing the consequences and results of their decisions. Also, it teaches the importance of self expression and the freedom that comes along with being your own person and having the power to choose what path to take in life. Figurative language is used often in this book and in a variety of quotes that have great importance to the theme, plot, and conflict of the novel.
Relationships between the individual and society vary between cultures, religions and ethnicities. Nevertheless, throughout history, how the individual is seen in society varies accordingly. In Medieval Europe, China and Islamic countries, religious beliefs and different philosophies greatly contributed and effected how individuals in a community acted and interacted with their society and other countries. Different lifestyles and common norms contributed to the differences in relationships because how the community interacted with each other influenced the way society acted in general. In some societies individualism was stressed where as in others the importance of community was emphasized. As a result, these ideas shaped the way society
I strongly believe that individuality should be valued over conformity. Today I will tell you how precious and rare individuality is, and why we should value it over conformity.
Individualism in today’s society is the “belief that each person is unique, special, and a ‘basic unit of nature’.” The individualism concept puts an
Have you ever thought of living in a place where everyone is the same and no one is different? Boring, right. In the book Anthem, Ayn Rand fully expresses her thoughts about the role of individualism and society. Anthem is a dystopian novella, written in 1937 and published in England in 1938. The book is about a society, in which there is no “I” and only “we” is allowed. The dictatorship of Anthem tries to keep the members of society brainwashed by focusing on the importance of obedience and equality which justifies restricting people from pursuing individual freedom and limiting their knowledge and vocabulary. Anthem is a critique of the political movements of Fascism and Communism in Europe during the 1930’s
From the first sentence of Anthem, what society deems appropriate to believe is evident. Page 19 says, “We strive like our brother men, for all men must be alike” (Rand 19). The quote reveals a loss of individuality and the importance of uniqueness. Throughout the society, the idea of the group before the individual and a loss of self are extremely conflicting to Christian values. Christ followers
But I still wonder how it was possible, in those graceless years of transition, long ago, that men did not see whither they were going, and went on, in blindness and cowardice, to their fate.” Dystopian societies often deal with the lack of importance of Free Will/ Individuality. Individuality is an important concept which was ignored completely in Anthem. Anthem was a novel wrote by Ayn Rand in 1937 to elaborate on the time period which she grew up in. Dystopia is a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease and overcrowding. Dystopian novels usually start out with a perfect society or utopia. However, as the novel progresses, the reader and characters realize that this perfect society is the total opposite. Dystopian
The quote that I chose from Anthem is, “I am. I think. I will. My hands… My spirit… My sky…
Individualism is a big idea that is portrayed in Anthem to mean valuing the unique characteristics of an independent human and what great contributions these characteristics can make. One image in the collage is a bright lightbulb shining amongst dim, uniform lightbulbs, which relates to individualism in Anthem because Equality thought differently than the rest of his brothers who were taught to think alike. The phrase “made to be noticed” relates to individualism, because it implies that all humans are unique and have at least one quality that separates them from the crowd. On the collage, there is an image of two white stars and one brown star in the middle, which represents that under the concept of individualism each person stands out from the rest and are different than the others around them. The next image is of a bright light shining as an individual’s brain
Ayn Rand, the author of Anthem, states, “The mind is an attribute of an individual. There is no such thing as a collective brain.” This statement means Ayn believes highly in individualism. Individualism is a belief in the freedom of action of individuals. Ayn Rand’s theme of individualism is not a sin is developed and supported in many of her works such as Anthem through the characters, Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000, and their actions.
A girl is going over to her best friends’ house who she hasn’t seen in 2 months. She arrives at her house and sees that there are other girls there. Everything was going fine, but then things get strange. Her best friend asks her if she wants to go to the mall to steal a shirt. Is she going to steal it? If she said yes to her friends, even if she doesn’t want to do it, she would be following the crowd. This means she is following what her friends do just because it may make her look cooler or more popular. If she told her friends that she didn’t want to, that means she is being an individual. Being an individual is doing something that is right for yourself and others. If someone is their own person, this means that they have their own strong
Freedom of individuality is seen as the essential form of freedom according to Mill. The freedom of thought and speech, discussed in Chapter 2, do play a pivotal role in ensuring freedom, however, they are viewed more as a means to an end rather than being something that should be pursued for its own good. The freedom of individuality is essential for human progress and development and “it is only the cultivation of individuality which produces, or can produce, well-developed human beings” (Mill 70). It is this stressed importance on the importance of
According to the dictionary, individuality is “the particular character, or aggregate of qualities, that distinguishes one person or thing from others.” In other words, individuality consists of the qualities and characteristics that make a person who they are. The general public is constantly saying that every single human being on this earth must be and act a certain way to be popular, but people should embrace their individuality and show it off because it makes them unique. In a world full of crazy expectations and varying definitions of perfection, being different is a burdensome undertaking. People need to be original, creative, and diverse to truly be themselves and break the ongoing cycles of culture today.
Another important point is that the behavior of human beings with each other. Because character of anyone plays an important role in the life of every person. If we observed our present conditions in our country, then we can say
