Personal Approach to Family Therapy Solution Focused Brief Therapy Martin Kariuki Eastern Nazarene College June 30th 2015 Personal Approach to Family Therapy Solution Focused Brief Therapy Postmodernists view of Solution focused Brief therapy (SFBT) is a counseling approach focusing on solutions instead of problems. There are no fixed truths or realities, and whatever the client presents is the reality. Therefore the client, not the therapist, is the expert. SFBT is a goal directed approach to brief therapy that uses ideals such as scaling questions, exceptions identity and solutions. Exceptions suggest solutions. Harpo had been in the custody of the Department of Children and Families from age 11 up to age 22. Harpo has diagnosis which includes, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (sexual abuse as a child), Bipolar Disorder with psychosis, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Major Depressive Disorder with psychosis. She also has Mild intellectual Disability, and learning Disability. Shortly after supports started she refused to participate in either residential or vocational supports and withdrew herself. Her behaviors began to quickly decline. Harpo is currently 6 months pregnant. When she became aware of her pregnancy, she stopped taking all prescribed psychotropic and antipsychotic medications. She is currently homeless and refusing shelter being offered to her. Since she stopped taking her prescribed medication, Harpo’s behaviors have become notably erratic, volatile and violent. Numerous civil actions have been brought against her, including Assault and Battery, sending threatening and harassing text messages, violating restraining orders taken out by the parent of acquaintances/former classmates, and violating a No Trespass order taken out by the disabled mother of her boyfriend. Harpo and her boyfriend have split up and she no longer has plans to live with him.
