Personal Career Analysis: Clinical Social Work I chose clinical social work as my career to research. A clinical social worker helps people who are mentally ill and finds treatments and organizations for them to be involved in. I am interested in this field because I love helping people, and I want to be there for people with mental disorders. After I took the “Kuder Skills Confidence Assessment,” my code was SAE, which stands for Social, Artistic, and Enterprising. I honestly feel this describes me well. Being social means I have the “skill to communicate, relate, teach, and help others,” and being enterprising means I have the “skill to lead or influence others in order to sell them a product, service, or idea” (Kuder, 2015). According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, “clinical social workers must have a master’s degree in social work and two years of post-master experience in a supervised clinical setting” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014). My plan to meet the education requirements for being a clinical social worker is to get my bachelor’s in social work at APSU and receive my master’s at APSU also. There are several upper level course requirements within the Austin Peay State University Undergraduate Bulletin that will help me achieve my goal of being a clinical social worker. Social Work 3420 - Human Behavior in the Social Environment will allow me to understand how people function in all environments and different cultures (Austin Peay State University, 2015). Social Work - 3770 Research Methods will allow me to properly analyze different social groups such as gays, lesbians, women, and people of color and come up with a proper solution for social problems affecting these oppressed groups (Austin Peay State University, …show more content…
I love learning about different people and understanding their hardships, so volunteering at a social service or a non-profit organization would be an amazing opportunity. Another strategy is to “join a social work organization while in school and seek leadership positions” (University of Tennessee, 2011). Joining a social work organization would be highly fascinating and allow me to learn more about my career. I would love to do both of the strategies given, because I will learn an enormous amount about social
Social work is a career that finds and chooses you, rather than you selecting it. Social work has always been an immense portion of my life even when I had no recollection of what social work entailed. My life revolved around so many situations that had a social worker stepped in, my life would be totally different than it is today. Many individuals and agencies lack the compassion and empathy for oppressed people. Having been in many circumstances, has given me the experience and background that influenced me to go into social work, as well as the understanding of my role and responsibilities that I will assume as a professional social worker, and my reasons for selecting the program at ASU School of Social Work and thoughts on how the Mission Statement addresses my career goals.
I believe social work is a passion and is consistent with my personality traits: loyalty, commitment, and personal servitude. This passion coupled with the forthcoming skills gained from an MSW degree at Florida International University, I will have the honor of becoming a professional social worker with unlimited possibilities to advocate, provide direct services or lead an organization-all of which will lead to my ultimate goal of positively affecting the lives of vulnerable people. FIU offers a quality, high-intensity program that will surely equip me with the tools to do this great profession and act of public service
There are several goals that I hope to achieve by pursuing a graduate degree in Social Work. Pursuing a MSW will provide me with the knowledge, tools, and skills-set that will be fundamental to the achievement my career goals outlined below.
Working in the social services field was always my dream. Whether working with children, family, adults, elderly etc. this career path is so broad it instills the hope of a career opportunity. My first year working in this field was in 2010 when I interned as an intake specialist in an outpatient drug treatment facility, while completing my bachelor’s degree in human services. Thereafter, I was able to branch off in various areas such as a case manager at a domestic violence shelter, housing specialist, substance abuse counselor and now a family services specialist.
While a bachelor’s degree is usually not required for entry into this occupation, employers increasingly seek individuals with relevant work experience beyond high school certificates. Associate degrees in subjects such as social work, human services, gerontology, or one of the social or behavioral sciences meet most employer’s requirements. Some jobs may require a bachelor’s or master’s degree in human services or a related field such as counseling, rehabilitation, or social work.
Social work involves passionate individuals who are dedicated to helping others by providing services to vulnerable children, families or individuals in need, while constantly looking for ways in which we can improve society. This discipline is dedicated to helping people find solutions to their problems in order to make the world a better place. I chose this field of study, because I find the job of a social worker rewarding. I have always enjoyed helping others and knowing that I have made a difference in someone’s life. It is no secret that this is a challenging career; however, the feeling of knowing that you made the world a better place is indescribable. I have simply decided to make my passion of helping others into a career. I know that in order to make my passion a career I will need to get the best education and training possible.
In order to become a licensed social worker in the United States, one must hold at least a Bachelor’s in Social Work (BSW) from an accredited program. With a BSW or a degree in a related field, the individual is able to provide the most basic of services to their clients such as casework or being a mental health assistant (U.S. Bureau Labor Statistics, 2016). However, in order to provide clinical mental and behavioral health services, a Master’s in
When I first thought about getting a degree in Sociology, I did not realize how wide the focus could be. It seems like the possibilities are endless. Before narrowing down my search and accessing my goals, I felt quite overwhelmed and did not have much faith that I would be able to narrow it down when there were so many different interests and passions I had when it came to making the world a better place. While there are several different possible careers that spark my interest, I do have a couple of main focuses that have been in my thoughts for quite some time.
I decided to apply to the social work master because I have encountered a lot of different experiences, problems, and achievements over the past four years. Similarly, I have always had a deep desire for helping others in a caring and supportive way. I faced many obstacles through my adolescent years such as: having an eating disorder, self-harm, and depression. After going through therapy, I realized that I wanted to help young people to overcome problems and to be able to help them to move forward in life. I want to make them comprehend that change is possible as long as the person want it.
To be able to fully and effectively help my clients I must be able to have certain traits. As stated in the results of the assessment, I have a concern about people. As a Social Worker, I must be able to make strong relationships with my clients. Having empathy for others will give me the ability to work well in my job. In my results, it showed I liked to come up with different and new ways of doing things. This is very beneficial to being a Social Worker because I need to find solutions to my clients’ problems. To be an effective Social Worker, I must use some of my personality traits on the
Significant relationships and life experiences that have I have had in giving or receiving help that have motivated me to enter the field of social work would be my dealings with other social workers I have worked with at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Southern California and my life experience as a military child and my experience serving, retiring and making a successful transition from active duty service member to civilian from the Navy. I am the only child to my biological parents. My childhood seemed normal, standard and carefree. My early beginnings were uneventful and ordinary. In elementary school I performed well academically, and participated in the Boy Scouts.
Starting from being a certified nursing assistant, to becoming a unit secretary for a hospital that specialize in wound care, I have always known that I wanted to help individuals in need. However, I noticed that I was not happy with helping individuals in medical need. It wasn’t until I decided to continue my education that I introduced to the world of social work. Going up with a single mother that suffered from drug abuse, my family depended on social services for a lot of assistance, from everything such as food stamps to family counseling. This life experience helped guide my thoughts on pursuing social work as a career. I know that I want to help individuals that are down on their luck, but I want to take it one step farther, by providing individual counseling to adults that may need more one on one time, than what is normally given from a social service agency. Counseling will also give me a chance to do what I love most and that is to talk and get to know the individuals that I am helping make like changing decisions. Working as a clinical social work has my interest because it does not put limits on what I can do or who I can help, and it will set me up for my future goal of becoming a licensed clinical social worker. Being my own boss and changing my community is my dream job, opportunity and goal. I am currently on my way with changing my community and living my dream, because I am currently working for a non-profit
I chose social working as my career because many other people go through tough situations and have a difficult time talking to relatives or friends to help them through a tough situation. I thought of becoming a social worker so I can have the ability to change the lives of others. Social work is one of those careers you can truly make a difference in people’s lives. I want to become a social worker because life isn’t about just helping yourself it’s about helping others as well, which is what social workers do for a living. Child and family social workers protect children and families in need of assistance. Many families and children don’t feel comfortable talking to just anyone about obstacles they have faced in their lives which is why
My interest in social work developed during college. I always had a interest in helping others in one way or another. I joined a sorority in college, Delta Sigma Theta, which is based off of community service. During the week I would volunteer to tutor children that were struggling in certain areas of school. I would talk to these children and explain to them the importance of education and try to influence them as much as possible to try their hardest in everything that they do. I would also go to nursing homes, with other member of our
