How my personal profession counselor education development is influenced? During my years in the studying for my Master’s Degree (accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) I have been thinking of a career in Counseling education. What pushed me into a Doctorate degree is the prospects of jobs and a strong academic standing to perform the job. I have the ambition to one day teach at a university. I had to research on the topic and ask my professors then what this field entitles. At each point, I noted the challenges I will have ahead of me and what I needed to overcome the challenges. I concluded that graduate studies will give me an advantage over others when we are applying for the
I would like to pursue counseling as my career and become a successful leader in the field. I have always had a passion to assist people in emotional distress. As a qualified professional in the counseling field, I would be able to identify their problems as well as offer them the most appropriate solutions that may help them deal with their situations. However, working as a professional counselor requires that I possess the relevant skills and knowledge that would enable me to offer quality services in which I think that I can obtain the skills at Capella University. As a
This reliability study was designed to test the inter-rater reliability of a newly developed measure of counselor competence for person-centered and experiential psychotherapy techniques. Developed by the authors in hopes of improving counselor training and supervision outcomes for therapists specializing in a person-centered approach, the Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapy Scale (PCEPS) is a rating scale containing two sub-scales (the person-centered subscale and experiential subscale) with which trained observers can rate the adherence and competence of therapists to a person-centered approach. The aim of this study was to investigate whether inter-rater agreement existed in ratings of therapists on the Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapy Scale (PCEPS).
A counselling relationship is likened to being on a journey - a beginning, middle and end (Smallwood, 2013). During the beginning phase the client develops sufficient trust in the counsellor and the relationship ‘to explore the previously feared edges of his awareness’ (Mearns and Thorne, 1988, p.126).
Becoming a mental health counselor wasn't an easy decision to come about. Hard to become prior to choosing to be a mental health counselor I have a desire to be a special-education teacher, specialize in working with children on the asperger's spectrum of autism. The reason I decided to choose to change my professional goals was because I thought as a counselor I will be able to work with children on different disabilities and adults on a one-to-one basis. Dream experience as a preschool teacher, many colleges have said that I have a sense of counseling and understanding when dealing with children and people. My previous class prior to this class give me a better understanding of what my goals are and how to reach them. So I truly believe

I researched the Texas state laws and the Oregon state laws for the licensing of professional counselors. The Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors requires a graduate level degree, supervised practicum experience, passing score for the National Counselor Exam and the Texas Jurisprudence Exam, and an internship. Texas offers two levels of credentialing which are the Licensed Professional Counselor Intern (LPC-I) and the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). As a LPC-I, the person is allowed to practice as a counselor while gaining the experience and intern hours needed to be a Licensed Professional Counselor (Counseling licensure in Texas, 2015).
As I started my college career at Tuskegee University, where I double majored in psychology and English. I was passionate about creating social awareness and helping people, but I was unsure what career I was interested in after graduation. I thought about attending graduate school for Counseling Psychology, but I just was not sure about it. I spoke to a professor in the Counselor Education program at Georgia State University and discussed my interests with her. She suggested I look for a program accredited by Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) School Counseling. I enrolled in the School Counseling program at Clark Atlanta
Becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) has important components to consider. The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) define counselling, along with psychotherapy, as being “umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies” (BACP, 2012: 1). In addition, counselling is provided by practitioners who “work with people over a short or long term to help them bring about effective change or enhance their wellbeing” (BACP, 2012: 1). Those who practice counselling in a professional manner undergo intensive training and personal development, the latter of which has been “defined in terms of self-awareness and change” (Wheeler, 1996: 75). These changes, according to Johns, “influence the
Did you ever wake up and think how can I live up to the expectations of a licensed counselor? I know I do – everyday. Where are the resources that can guide me in the right directions when I am faced with a situation while practicing? The American Counseling Association is the resource that can provide me with tools that can facilitate my development as a future counselor. After I get my LCPC in the state of Maryland, I want to counsel children and adolescents with severe psychological trauma. The ACA website has an entire section on ‘trauma and disaster’ for children through adolescents.

In order to pursue my dream career in being an addictions counselor, I require a higher level of schooling to ensure that I will be doing a good job and be the perfect fit for my clients. There is a lot of courses that one can take in order to be an addictions counselor, but for me I got my eye on three. Firstly, I will need to have more studies in maths, this can be about any high level math class like algebra or business mathematics. For example, Indeed shares that you need to use math to understand how to build successful statistics (Ring). Thus, as an addictions counselor, I must be able to calculate factors like a drugs dosage and what it means to my client quickly in my head. Secondly, I will need to know about alcohol and drug abuse to be an effective counselor, this class is essential to be an addictions counselor.
With the diversifying population in America’s schools, a profession school counselor should be culturally competent to meet the needs of all students. “The transformed professional school counselor is culturally competent, respectful of human diversity, and a school leader in ensuring that oppressive systemic barriers to academic, career, college readiness, and personal/social development are removed (Erford, 2015, p. 173).” A school counselor needs to have a deep understanding of a variety of cultures to meet the personal, emotional, developmental needs of a student using individual and group interventions while being aware of their cultural and spiritual needs.

I have conducted an interview with a professional counselor in order to further understand the experience of being a counselor. The interview that I conducted explores the requirements of maintaining and receiving a counselling career, the experience of being a counselor, and what characteristics or skills a professional may have. The Individual who agreed to the interview was a counselor by the name of Susie Facio. Susie Facio, through this interview, will be giving us a look at what influenced her to become a counselor, what her work entails on a day to day basis, and what qualities and skills she has acquired in order to become a successful counselor.
