Introduction With an ever expanding social network, humans today have the ability to communicate with a stranger somewhere else in the world in a matter of a few clicks. Taking this into account, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and many more continue to grow their user base and consequently data regarding their user base. As social media companies turn data collection into knowledge, and as a society we become more intertwined, it is important to consider if the data is protected, accurate, and provided with consent. Subsequently, it is apparent that the use of personal data to understand users and their habits is a growing trend and provides social media platforms the opportunity to market products differently and even help users facing a mental illness. Keeping this in mind, this study revolves around whether personal data is accurate and should be used to help those showing signs of mental illness. The Interview Protocol for this study was generated by the IS 375 – Discovering User Needs for UX creating a semi-structured interview composed of “Get To Know You” questions followed by Behavioral Questions, and Main-Purpose questions. Specifically, I interviewed two people who’s answers are the basis to the analysis, however, themes and general conclusions are based upon 15 interviews conducted by IS 375 students. Privacy has become a prominent topic in academic and social debate throughout the country. In “Term of Service” by Jacob Silverman, Silverman argues that American citizens today are unaware that their private information is often shown and are no longer safe from the public eye. After all, the integration of social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter has made it impossible to keep anything private. Sharing life events on social media has become the new social norm in the United States. However, this new trend has left the online community with a false sense of security, leaving them venerable against data mining, profiling, and unknown surveillance issues by third party miners across the country. With no end to this threat, how can causal social media users defend themselves without any assistants? The federal government should adopt stronger privacy laws like they have in Europe. They should come up with a digital bill of reforms to help better protect the online community, better inform the public about data mining threats, and companies should get government approval for any data retrieval before they are used for financial gains.

They are super nice and without social media I would have never had that experience I would have to play be myself all the time and have no one to talk to. But now I have the chance to make friends and have fun with them even tho they live far away. Also colleges and most jobs look at your social media account to see what kind of person you are and if you are able to work so not only can you have fun but you can also potentially make money from it and you can make friends.
