Personal Essay On Being American

An American can be defined by a variety of things. A natural born citizen is just as American as an immigrant searching for a new life, just like in “America and I” by Aniza Yezierska. An American can be a rich businessman or it could be a dedicated soldier like in “Veteran’s Day: Never Forget Their Duty” by John McCain. An individual’s definition of being an American is shaped by their life experiences. A person’s view on being an American is different because of experiences, such as being a veteran, being an immigrant, or living in poverty, all of which affect one’s perspective.

What does it mean to be an American? In my eyes to be an American means to have privileges, rights, and freedom. America isn't perfect, but it is one of the only countries that have rights given to people of different diversities and gender. America does not have tremendous poverty. Instead we have choices given to us by the people who fought and died for the American people. Without George Washington and the other patriots who planted the first seed in the ground and help plant the American nation we live in now who knows what America would be like now.

According to a 1998 definition an American is anyone who loves life enough to want the best that it has to offer, anyone who understands that to achieve the best in life requires action, exertion, and effort, anyone who understands the need to use one’s mind and wits to meet life’s challenges, anyone who understands that achieving the best in life requires risks (Hudgins, page 1). Upholding liberty is undoubtedly the greatest ideal; an ideal deeply vested within the minds of Americans. To be an American is to uphold liberty by understanding one another and showing respect for the individual. The Bill of Rights outlines this very well, with speech being the first right set forth as unalienable. Being American is not just the residency in America, it is the wholehearted upholding of these consummated truths. Blind patriotism is neither more American, for is glosses over the point of understand others. American is just the title for those who uphold these common goal, and act it out within the shared world.

What does being an american mean to me? Being an american means that I have freedom to do things that I want,liberty,and the pursuit of happiness which the military fights for. Another thing I have is rights that means that I have choices to pick things that I want to do in life like pick a job or do whatever because of the military fighting for are country. I also have justice which means that things are fair and you have a fair trial if I go to court and can not just go to jail.

Being patriotic is not the only aspect that defines what an American is. Although, it is one of the main concepts used in America that people use to define what it means to be an American. When people show patriotism, they show that they respect the country, and take pride in the country that they live in. Most people believe that there is more to patriotism than what people think there is. “Patriotism is a love and a duty, a love of country expressed in good citizenship,” (McCain).

The American Identity, one that defines us all, would therefore be our courage and devotion among all other emotions to stand up for our rights, independence, and our freedom.

America’s foreign policy affects each and every person in the world in terms of prices, taxes, supply of gasoline, and the lives of our soldiers also depends on how we associate with US. This country can bring hope to the lives of the poorest people in the world. It is because of their persona that they are able to respect the lives of others who are not even their own. But, being an American is not only based on the rights, freedom and privileges the American people get, being American is based on the hard work and sacrifices the people of american do in order to get what they want and what they want to be. Being an American is easy to understand for some people, they think the rights and the freedom is what makes an American. It is really obvious that the reason for being American is the freedom it’s country gave to its people. Americans was given more rights than any other group of people in the world. Being an American means to have opportunities that are available to us that others don’t get in other parts of the world. The United States of America is a country that is based on being a free country for citizens to have more freedom than anywhere else. In my opinion, the American Identity is shown through the ideas of its people, and their willingness to take risks. The creation of The Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were two ideas shown through the people. Americans were willing to take risks no matter the circumstances.

The American Ideological Consensus is that “…the American people have shared much of the same ideals, the same basic principles, and the same patterns of belief” (McClenaghan 104). When America filled itself with ideologically homogenous people, their beliefs started to define our nation and became American identities. If asked what they think of America, peoples of other nations would say that the roads are made of glass, opportunity is in the air, and civil rights are plentiful. The American Persona is basically the average person or personality of America; what they say, think, and how they act. Rational choice theory is an assumption that people always make prudent and logical decisions that usually benefit or satisfy them to their own personal interest. In my opinion, being American is eating a lot and gaining weight. I consider myself a strong identifier in being an American. I would say that I fit the typical stereotype of an American. I support the choices Americans make and remain loyal even through the bad decisions. When natural disasters or unexpected tragedies happen in America, I feel instant empathy towards everyone that was effected, even if I have never met them.
