Personal Essay: Radiation Therapy

In 2016 approximately 1,685,210 cases of cancer will be diagnosed, and 595,690 people will die due to this disease. My uncle, unfortunately, was a victim of this deadly disease. My family and I witnessed the effects of this and it impacted us all strongly. I watched as my uncle underwent all the surgeries and treatments, and progressively got weaker and became fragile. The whole experience made me reflect upon myself and I desired to make a change, and help expand the research to develop a cure to end cancer.

Most Dangerous game argument paragraph Sanger Rainsford did have a right to kill General Zaroff. First off Zaroff said in the story when he was explaining the game to Rainsford that, “I am to follow, armed only with pistol of the smallest caliber and range” ( Connell 5). This is not fair to Rainsford because a gun is more easy to kill than a knife. This would make an acceptable example of a good reason to kill Zaroff because Zaroff did not play the game fair. The stigma of sin haunts the history of the Puritan community, Hester wore the scarlet letter as a reminder to herself and the community of her grave sin of committing adultery. In the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne Hester Pryne commits adultery and in result has to wear the scarlet letter for the rest of her life. Pearl the result of her mother's sin is a living, breathing example of sin. Pearl is seen as a demon because of her evil nature, a series of events occur which changes the puritan community's thoughts on Pearl by the end of the novel.

According to the American Cancer Society, half of all men and one third of all women will develop cancer within their lifetime (Cancer.org). These figures are staggering. Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and is a terrifying and unpredictable disease for many cancer sufferers. As such, it is imperative that healthcare workers have a thorough understanding of the various cancer diagnoses, treatments, and preventative strategies necessary to combat this devastating plague. Skills at managing not only the illness itself, but also the psychological and social side effects

Give people diagnosed with a life limiting illness, a better understanding of the different types of cancers and management of the issues they may encounter as their disease progresses.

Cancer affects everyone – the young and old, the rich and poor, men, women and children – and represents a tremendous burden on patients, families and societies. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world, particularly in developing countries.

Growing up, I have had to endure the loss of many family members to the devastating disease we all know as cancer. My family history varies from the different types of the illness from lung cancer, leukemia, breast cancer, ovarian, and so on. My mother and grandmothers on my mother's and father's sides suffered from ovarian, leukemia, and breast cancer respectively. I have seen the horrible effects it has on the victim and their families, and knowing that pain and grief personally, makes me believe that I would be a great nurse in oncology. I want to help those going through what could be some of the toughest times in their lives if not the toughest.

Cancer has played a huge role in my life recently. It started when dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer when I was a junior in high school. He tried to remain strong and act like he wasn’t scared, but you could tell he was terrified and depressed. On a few occasions I went with him to his radiation treatments and I was immediately impressed with the radiation therapists. They were always smiling, and trying to make the worst time of some people’s life better. When my dad talks about his cancer experience he always talks about how much of a positive impact his radiation therapist had.

The prime condition of success ,the great secret ,is to concentrate my energy , thought ,and capital exclusively upon business in cancer .Having begun in research ,resolve to fight it out , to lead in it , adopt every improvement ,have the best machinery, and know the most about it .Two passions ,simple but overwhelmingly strong ,has governed my life : the search for knowledge and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.I have sought knowledge . I have wished to understand the causes of cancer . I have wished to know why people die . And I have tried to apprehend the breakthrough in cancer treatment written by Gleevec who discovered the approach was to target the disease at the cellular and subcellular level .A little of this ,but not much , I have achieved.I long to alleviate the pain of cancer . As the mathematician Jules Henri Poincare said, Science is built with facts just as a house is built with bricks .I would take approaches as many scientists do .Scientist start an investigation by finding out what other scientists have learned about a particular problem.After known the facts have been gathered , the scientist come to the part of the investigation that requires considerable imagination . Possible problem are formulated. The scientists plans experiments,performs calculations,and makes observations to test hypotheses.When hypotheses are confirmed ,they are incorporated into theories. When historians and common people alike look back at the Second World War, one person stands out among all of the people who had a part, Adolf Hitler. His atrocities and crimes are well documented across the world but one question which has many people puzzled is, why did the people of Germany support Hitler and his Nazi regime? Also how much were the German people to blame for the events that occurred during the National Socialist Party’s regime? Were they just to blame as Hitler himself or did they have no fault in what was going on? According to Gotz Aly and his book, Hitler's Beneficiaries, the answerz to the former question is simpler that one might think. According to Aly, Hitler simply brought his peoples consent.

My paternal grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 7yr old. At this age, I was too young to comprehend what was going on, but I do remember the significance of the situation and the impact that it had on my entire family. It truly influenced me. My research done on Radiation Therapy substantiates that this field has a strong impact on people’s lives both physically and mentally. Within this past year my maternal grandmother was also diagnosed with breast cancer. Seeing the effect that a positive support system can have as well as the success that the radiation therapy has had on her has reinforced my desire to be able to pursue a career that would allow me to help people get through tough times in their lives by being able to provide physical care as well as emotional support.

I also have experience working in a Oncology department as a Radiation Therapist. I'm often asked if it is depressing working with cancer patients. Like you I have made many attachments and have found it very rewarding. There is no doubt it can be a very difficult job, but I have met so many wonderful people who have share so much with me. For a short time I also worked in an Emergency Department as a Radiographer. I also liked that very much. The adrenalin of what was coming in really kept me on my toes. It sounds like you have a lot of experience working in two very challenging departments.

Cancer is a major issue in our country today due to it having no cure, and it’s one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. I’ve been personally affected by this tragic disease by losing my uncle to colorectal cancer at the age of twelve. This disease has caused significant losses of life; therefore, it is my goal to join a team that has as its objective to finding a cure for cancer. Specifically, I will become a physician in order to become a part of the solution to cancer.

What do cancer, radiation, and technology have in common? The links between the three are quite extraordinary. Cancer is a disease that accounts for 13% of all deaths in the world (Delfino and Day 1). The disease has an impact on patients, friends and their love ones. According to WebMD, radiation is energy that travels in the form of waves through radiation therapy. Through radiation therapy, radiation is used to stop, slow or cure the growth of cancer. With technology, radiologists can treat cancer patients through radiation and special computerized imaging (WebMD).

In 2007, it is predicted that almost 1.5 million people will be diagnosed with cancer in the United States (Pickle et al., 2007). More than half of these cancer patients will undergo the use of radiation as a means for treating cancer at some point during the course of their disease (Perez and Brady, 1998). Cancer, a disease caused by an uncontrollable growth of abnormal cells, affects millions of people around the world. Radiotherapy is one of the well known various methods used to treat cancer, where high powered rays are aimed directly at the tumor from the outside of the body as external radiation or an instrument is surgically placed inside the body producing a result of internal radiation. Radiation is delivered to the cancerous regions of the body to damage and destroy the cells in that area, terminating the rapid growth and division of the cells. Radiation therapy has been used by medicine as a treatment for cancer from the beginning of the twentieth century, with its earliest beginnings coming from the discovery of x-rays in 1895 by Wilhelm Röntgen. With the advancements in physics and computer programming, radiation had greatly evolved towards the end of the twentieth century and made the radiation treatment more effective. Radiation therapy is a curative treatment approach for cancer because it is successful in killing cancerous tumor cells and stop them from regenerating.
