Personal Essay: The Issue Of Abortion

When touching the subject of abortion, one must consider that there are two sides battling for control. That is right, abortion has literally turned into a war zone where even the unlikely of individuals do the unthinkable. Each side has their motives and methods for contradicting the other. For instance, there are cases and events that support both sides of this issue.

Abortion has been an issue of heated debate in the United States for numerous years. Legislation has ruled it legal to perform an abortion on any gestational age of an embryo or fetus. Some people agree with the law and consider themselves pro-choice. Others are completely against abortion and are pro-life. In addition to these two groups is another group who support abortion in the first half of pregnancy, but believe abortion should be banned for the second half.

Margaret Sanger’s argument is about birth control. She wants to get out women’s stories so that people can see genuine reasons why women are for the Birth Control Movement. What she uses to support her argument is strong evidence to get the people that are not for the Birth Control movement to see the real problem. Though there may be many with true knowledge about what women with so many children go through, there must be a handful who may be blinded by their religious beliefs or other reasons. Even today we see this huge controversy about abortion and we see those who are strongly against it refer to abortion as murder. Even though things are different in today’s world with just about everything, people still feel strongly about the situation in general. I thought I was against this, but I belonged to the group of people who made a decision based on my limited knowledge and what I vaguely think is right or wrong. Sanger even brings up that it is a “type of slavery.” She brings up solid points and follows them with real life examples. These are teenage mothers that she is talking about or women who became mothers in their teen years. As she tries to continue what she considers a battle, she also voices in from abstinent couples. She uses a letter written to her about a couple who had to become abstinent because it was basically a matter of life or death for the woman. She has several women contacting her for help puts her in a position where she feels she has to reach the public, as she sees how the number of women ask her for help increases, she sees this is something the rest need to see. It is too big of a problem for people to continue to say that it is just a matter of it being wrong. It is true when she says that it is a disgrace to American ideals and constitution which guarantees to every citizen the right to life, liberty, and the pursue of happiness (Sanger 202).

This article stood out to me because even though I do not believe in abortion, this article opened my eyes to why women do get abortions. I feel like women should get the last say in if she wants an abortion  or not because it is their body and even if the man wants to keep the child, it should be the woman's last say. I feel like no matter what the relationship is of the man and women having the child, it is the woman's body and the man just has to deal with her decision because it is not his body. This article talked about family and motherhood because the author says “I’m pro-abortion because I take motherhood seriously (#3)” and I do agree with the author about that because when the child is born, the mother should provide everything she can to keep the child happy and healthy. If the mother can not  provide a stable home for her child (whether the father is in the child's life or not), the baby should be born into a family that can take care of it. Then she talks about “I’m pro-abortion because well-timed pregnancies give children a healthier start in life (#2)” and that goes along with providing the child with things/food it needs. That also goes along with if the parents are ready/prepared for the child. If a mother can not provide for her child and the father may not what the child, then I understand why
