Personal Essay: Why Do Writers Write?

The Romance Narrative is rife with traditional literary tropes. If you’ve read such tales as swashbuckling wandering knights facing magic dragons and other such impossible odds, then you have an idea of what this genre is about. The tradition dates back to the epic, and can be seen in early mythological tales such as the Illiad, or the Odyssey, and early English stories like Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, or the Arthurian tales. They include adventure and fantastical elements; heroes battle villains to determine if good can triumph over evil.

Many people enjoy and have fun writing, but then again, many people dislike having to write, including me. Writing has always been something I was never really interested on for many reasons.

Romance can be a part of someone’s life, but it isn’t always the main focus. In the article “I Can’t Think About Kissing: Strong Female Protagonists and Romance in Dystopian Young Adult Fiction”, university student Mollie Hall discusses romance in dystopian novels: “Romance is pursued, but it is a side pursuit in the female protagonist’s journey instead of the goal.” (Hall 5). This statement is true in the novel Blood Red Road by Moira Young. Saba is a girl with a plan, who has had her brother stolen from her own home. She vows to get her brother back and sets off on a journey, meeting many interesting, villainous, and kind characters. That being said, Saba finds a bit of romance. This, however, is not her main goal. This is evident during Saba’s first meeting with Jack, her need for help, and her thoughts on her relationship with Jack. To begin, the initial meeting between Saba and Jack demonstrates a romantic viewpoint in the novel. Upon seeing Jack, Saba instantly feels a sense of love from her heartstone, a necklace charm that heats up when you are near your heart’s desire:

Writing has never been a real interest of mine. The only time I had to write any of my thoughts on paper was in school. I believed that one had to have that special trait or gift in them that made them a good writer, just like athletes are gifted in their sport. After reading the articles by Pat Mora and the other one from George Orwell, there can be many reasons as to why anyone would like to write.

The relationship that I have with writing is complicated and we don’t always get along. Although we tend to make up even when I get frustrated and want to quit. When being assigned a paper I struggle with what to write. My words seem to never come out the way I would like and I’m always having to start over and over again. It starts to get frustrating after a while. Needless to say writing isn’t one of my favorite things to do but it’s apart of our everyday lives like texting, sending emails, posting on Facebook, Twitter, and so on. I personally have only used texting as my main daily form of writing since I graduated high school. So therefore I would like to refresh my memory of what I learned in high school and widen my use of writing while in this writing course.

The only way you can become better at doing something is simply by continuing to work on your craft. Whether it is a hobby, an interest, or a profession, if you don't keep working, then you will remain complacent. A year ago, I thought writing was one of those things where I would just be complacent in. Not because I didn’t wanted to work harder at it, but because I thought of writing as one of those skills that came natural to you, or you did not have it at all. I always wanted my writing to improve but never knew how.

Giovanna Navas is currently a communications major at Miami Dade College. Her dream for the future is to be an author because she loves storytelling, but feels like until her skills as a writer develop she should learn more about the publishing world and pursue a job in it. This summer, I started my own original story called, “My Never-Changing Heart”. It’s a dramatic, somewhat even pathetic, love story about a girl from South Korea and a spy from North Korea. It’s a story that was originally inspired by song lyrics. It is not complete yet, but I have planned out every single chapter. Each chapter is about six pages, and I have been uploading my story onto a website for other people to read. So far, it has about twenty chapters, and I have forty-four subscribers. My subscribers always leave encouraging comments, saying that they enjoy my story, and they ask me to update more often. Writing has never really been a passion I possess. I wouldn’t go as far to say I hate it, but, I wouldn’t want to say I love it either. For some, writing is a way to escape their own messed up worlds and creates a new, it’s exciting, adventures, and daring, but, to me, writing is such a tedious task that I as a person do not have the patience to withstand. I haven’t always disliked writing; I actually use to enjoy getting all my thoughts down on paper and coming out with my own little masterpiece my parents could hang on the fridge and boast about to their friends. The worst/best paper I ever had to write was in fifth grade; I had to describe my top three very best friends in five paragraphs or more, then let my elbow partner grade it on a scale from 1-6 ( six being the best.) I put my all into that paper; it was going to be my best paper yet.
