Reasons why I should not fall asleep on duty. If I was to get called to a traffic accident or a domestic dispute I would not be able to respond because I would be asleep. Therefore I would not be able to complete my duties as a military police officer. Being a military police officer I should up hold the standards and the law appointed to me by the United States army. If I was asleep during an active shooter event that may take place at a bank or maybe the commissary, possibly even the PX in Hainerburg housing I would not be able to respond accordingly do to my current state. I have learned a great many things from playing soccer. It has changed my entire outlook on and attitude toward life. Before my freshman year at Cool high school, I was shy, had low self-esteem and turned away from seemingly impossible challenges. Soccer has altered all of these qualities. Accountability is everything within the Marine Corps and within the working world. Unit cohesion could not exist without accountability. Good communication could not happen without good accountability. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines accountability as: “the quality or state of being accountable; especially: an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions”

Marines in the past have lost their lives from just as simple as not being accounted for. Marines never take this serious because a lot of people in today’s day of age are always just assuming their numbers are up. That factor is where leadership and responsibility fall into play. “On the night of 30 August 1988, Lcpl Rother was posted alone as a road guard/guide along a desolate trail. The Marines in in the unit just assumed that Lcpl Rother got picked up and the platoon sergeants had an all hands formation and they all reported “All present”. “At approximately 1730 on 1 September, a weapons inventory highlighted the fact that Lcpl Rother had not been seen in 2 days. From where his remains were found, Lcpl Rother could have seen US Highway 66 (National trails highway) 2 miles away.” (Almazan). Since I am a soldier these pertain to me also. They must be awake to maintain security on an area, which is their responsibility. If they fall asleep during their shift it shows that they have a lack of discipline. We need to have a steady mindset down the hill so we do not fall asleep behind a turret and get shot ourselves

Sleeping on guard duty is not tolerated by any means. If you fall asleep on guard duty a lot of things can happen. Your post can be over run, the equipment that you are meant to guard could be stolen, or the building you’re guarding could get broken into. You could face a UMCJ action for falling asleep because you’re in violation of FM 22-6 which covers guard duty. You are looked upon to perform your duty at all times and if you fall asleep you fail to do your part and cover all things that are covered in you special orders. Any violations that may occur at your post you can become a part of because you fell asleep while the violations happen. Staying awake while on duty is important for many reasons. First of all, I could potentially endanger not only myself, but also the rest of my platoon. Should an enemy slip by while I slept, they could possibly detonate a VBIED or kill battle buddies through any number of other means. Families could be destroyed because of my mistake.

The punishments may be very severe if you don’t follow the rules and orders especially during a time of war the worst case scenario is that you may be sentenced to death by court-martial. Bottom line is that you shouldn’t even try to break these rules and regulations because it can ruin your career in the Marine Corps and it can also hurt you if you ever decide to leave the Corps. School, to me and among many peers of my age, is not a distant term. I have spent one-third of my life time sitting in classrooms, every week since I was seven years old. After spending this much time in school, many things and experiences that happened there have left their mark in my memory. Some are small incidences while some have had a great impact on me.
