I am a 62- year- old single black female and only speak one language, which is English. I have one daughter from a marriage that ended in the death of my husband. My daughter resides in Cedar Hill, Texas with her son and husband. After graduating high school, I enroll at El Centro Jr. College. During that semester, I was employed part time at Republic National Bank. I accepted the job and became full- time shortly after. I then made lead (supervisor) and decided not to return to school. I am Amanda Selich, 27 years old, and have been living in San Francisco for roughly 10 years. I grew up in the East Bay with my 3 siblings and was raised by a single father. Much of my childhood was spent taking care of my younger siblings. This responsibility was so demanding I was forced to drop out of high school and become their “surrogate mother”. However at the age of 24 I was able to get my GED and finally attend college. In fact this past May I graduated from City College of San Francisco with highest honors in Science and Math.
Doris Miller, born in the early 1900s and died in the mid 1900s, was born into a poor family. Doris also got into many racial fights in high school, but at the age of 20 he joined the navy hoping to earn money for his family. On the ship, he worked as a kitchen worker but had an astonishing title as “Heavyweight champion of West Virginia” because he fought in many boxing competitions. On December 7th, 1941 his ship was under attacked by Japanese soldiers and planes, because of his battle station being destroyed he was ordered to retrieve fallen crewmen. Nelle Harper Lee, born April 28, 1926 was named after her grandmother, Ellen. Her mother was Francis Cunningham Finch, born August 14, 1888, and her father was Amass Coleman Lee, born in 1880. Mr. Lee grew up as a farmer in Florida before moving to Alabama and settling down with Francis. They had three children before Nelle. The oldest was Alice Finch Lee (1911) and she was fifteen when Nelle was born. The second oldest was Louise Lee Finch (1916) who was ten years Nelle’s senior. The second youngest child, and only son of the Lee family, was Edwin Lee (1920). Because of the mere six year age difference Edwin and Nelle were very close growing up.
Hello reader, I’m about to tell you a story of some of my life. Jessie Daniel Ames was an early civil rights activist and Texas Woman suffragist who through determination and perseverance fought to acquire voting rights for women and to change the lynching laws for blacks in the south. Jackie Joyner Kersee is one of the top female athletes in US history. Her story is inspirational. She showed that even if you do not have a lot of money you could still follow your dreams and reach your goals. Jackie was poor when she grew up but still went to school and graduated. She even went on to be in the Olympics. She is a true inspiration to all ages even if your eighty years old.
Hope is something people in this world don't really have. It's hard to find people with hope. If you know people who are courageous then you can say that they are hopeful because it takes courage in order for you to have hope.
