Personal Leadership Style I look at myself and I see an individual who wants to help others succeed. Understanding that helping other is my main goal will allow me to analyze what kind of leader I want to become. Knowing when a person needs coaching and when a person needs me to take a step away will be a key aspect to my leadership style. I want the people I am leading to feel confident with the task, but also comfortable enough they can ask for help if they need any assistance. Having a caring response to each problem will allow me to act rationally and take the best course of action. I will motivate others by allowing them to buy into my philosophy of helping others and always giving 100% of my effort. Hersey and Blanchard’s Situational Leadership Theory (1977) is a theory that is based around the …show more content…
If an employee or an individual I am working with does not have the same vision/goal, I need to reevaluate why they are working for the company. I am positive I will be working in a field helping others after graduation and if those who I am responsible for do not want to help others or complete the mission of the company, I will most likely ask them to find a different position elsewhere in the company or at a new job. I firmly believe that you cannot make someone love helping others. The drive to be at service others is a person’s own choice and pushing them to want to help others will only drive them away. As the text states, both commitment and vision requires a buy-in by the organization (Ledlow & Stephens, 2014, p. 136). A shared vision loops back into the Situational Leadership Theory regarding the commitment of the follower and although the commitment level may change, it is up to the follower to buy into the vision, and as a leader I can encourage that change, but not force
Herschey and Blanchard developed the Situational Leadership theory in order to identify where a team or individual fit in any particular situation and to match a leadership style most appropriate to that situation.
Phase 1 of the Personal Leadership Philosophy Paper presented the opinion and supporting information establishing that; leaders are products of opportunity, birth and environment, but of these; opportunity influences great leadership the most. Furthermore, it was discussed that assigned leadership is a cancer to corporate America and this point is illustrated in the following example. While employed at Deloitte and Touché Consulting Group (DNT) we engaged ARCO, a major oil and gas company, to develop and implement an email migration strategy that consisted of 1200 Arco users at their subsidiary company, Vaster Resources Inc. In the initial meeting we were introduced to a gentleman, we will call John Smith for the purposes of this paper,
My father once told me that, “everything we do— be it in academia, at work, social or family life—we are guided by principles, beliefs and values that collectively form our ideology of life.” I believe that every leader, to a certain extent, is shaped through her individual personal experience. Although in some cases, we may not realize to what extent our personal assumptions and beliefs shape our ability to lead or be led.
According to Schwartz (1997), Goizueta joined Coca-Cola at a time when the company was in trouble. Slowed by bureaucracy and with an eroding stock price, the beverage maker was slowly loosing its market share to rivals like Pepsi. An inspirational leader, Goizueta was able to turnaround the beverage maker and before his exit, the company had become one of the most recognizable brands in the world. His managerial style as Rowe and Guerrero (2010) point out was more intellectual than hands-on.
A widely recognised situational model is the model developed by Hersey and Blanchard (1969) and the revised model by Blanchard et al. (1985) (Northhouse, 2007). The theory in outline states that one's leadership style should be dictated by the type of situation and the demands of the situation at
As a leader, it is important for us to have a simple, profound leadership philosophy. I have decided to go about this by answering six prompts of my core beliefs and behaviors which are, I always…, I spend a lot of time…, I value…, I am curious about…, I respect…, and I listen… These six prompts form the basis of how I see myself as a leader and a person.
Today a lot of the things we talked about really hit home with me, and I actually cried in a room full of strangers as I told them my story and why I chose to be a leader.
The three concepts that I found the most valuable during my academic lessons at Non-Commissioned Officer Academy Intermediate Leadership Experience would be the three elements of flexibility, the five traits of followership, and leadership influencing styles. These concepts are very important to me because they will make a positive change in myself and my leadership style. My goal to change my flexibility and, my overall adaptability, would be to change my default setting of dispositional flexibility to a more positive outlook. I currently may have a stand-offish/negative outlook when it comes to change. To be a more effective leader I must will myself to maintain a positive disposition to a changing environment. The next goal would be
Ms. Corson, my second-grade teacher was a democratic leader who influenced with integrity. She was the first to demonstrate equality and justice, in my world. She became the standard which I held all leaders to from that point forward. As one might well imagine, that new standard led to a great deal of disappointment and insubordination.
A leader thinks of the group, rather than themselves aiming for a goal. A leader cares for their team and the process taken to reach their goals. A good leader balances their concern for people and concern for production to promote a fair and productive environment. When I think about a good leader, I envision a democratic leadership style because a leader should trust their team members to do their job well and be there for support and manage conflict, not delegate and belittle. When I am leading a group, I take into consideration what I am asking from my team and how I can support them. I try to guide them to easier processes and offer counter points while letting them create the final product. I focus on relationship-oriented leadership
The situational leadership model was developed by two authors, Ken Blanchard, and Paul Hersey in the year 1969. These authors based this model on the concept that leadership should adapt to different management practices and approaches to fit different situations and surpass any diversity of their encounters (Lussier & Achua, 2010). In particular, this model provides guidance on how to analyze a situation, choose effaceable strategies and adopt the most appropriate leadership style. Apparently, the two developers of the model researched and found that, given some case, leadership may fail to accomplish some goals due to adopting single
In the case Drill Sergeant at First, we find Mark Young the crew leader of 20 employee’s at a hospital. Young was determined to innovate change in the department by submitting direct and indirect cost of the painting department , as well as, reorganizing of the department with new scheduling and procedures with new expectations of performance. Young’s take in this case is he focused on task performance with his crew to attempt to align the performance of his crew with the expectation and high specifications of the hospital environment. At some point in this case, Young made a conscious decision to utilize the Authority-Compliance Management approach, as referenced by
26. Monica’s boss allows her any decision she thins is important on the spot without consulting anyone. Monica’s boss has this kind of leadership style.
Hersey and Blanchard’s Situational Leadership Theory (SLT) asserts that a leader’s effectiveness is dependent upon the readiness, or ability and willingness, of the leader’s followers to complete a task. This leadership style is an amalgamation of task-oriented and relationship-oriented characteristics that are employed depending upon the situation and the followers involved. According to the SLT, as followers increase in readiness the leader’s style is to adapt accordingly (Kinicki & Kreitner, 2009).
The principles of personal leadership emphasize that people who read the article should avoid distractions and analyze the article in its entirety. Absorbing the content will challenge the reader to think critically and respond accordingly to the material. Additionally, readers need to grasp the message within the article, so they will gain a better understanding of the content. Furthermore, I believe the article paints a visual picture on how people will celebrate your life when you pass away. Viewing a funeral of myself where I’m listening and watching everybody responses and reactions respectively, would be interesting to observe. As the attendees congregate on my behalf, for the service, I would like for speakers to indicate that I made a positive impact in their lives and influenced them to achieve whatever endeavors they desire. Leaving a legacy for others to follow will keep my memories alive and allow people to remember the principles and standards that I lived by.
