In the book, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho it shares the idea of everyone having a personal legend and following their dreams. The novel really makes you think about why you specifically were put on this earth and what you are supposed to do to make a difference. The main character Santiago believes that his personal legend was to find treasure but as he searches, he finds that the experience was worth much more than the gold. Coelho also makes you reflect on the idea of paying more attention to the smaller things that you would otherwise take for granted. Nobody has the exact same experience throughout life and everyone’s actions open millions of new paths for them to take. Personal legends are already set out for us, we just don’t know how to follow them or what will happen as we do. How I do in school, what college I go to, and what I end up deciding to do as a career could play into my personal legend, but a personal legend doesn’t always have to be education related. The biggest thing I can take from the idea of personal legends is to not be a sheep and always keep my eye out for omens. Santiago’s sheep represent people who don’t follow the omens and ignore the call of their personal legend. I don’t want to live my life and then realize when I’m much older than I never did anything about my personal legend. Also, if a sign presented itself I don’t want to miss it. You don’t know what your purpose for life is supposed to be if you’ve barely begun to live it. I am still too naive and uneducated to do anything about it. The first time to act upon your personal legend would be when there is an obvious chance for you to do something great. An opportunity has yet to present itself to me so therefor I haven’t began the journey for my own personal legend. It’s hard to find different opportunities when I’m a teenager living with my parents and going to school everyday. At first when you told me to start thinking about what my personal legend was and how it could not be what you want to be when you grow up, I had no clue what mine would be. Ever since the start of high school, I have spent more time researching my options for the future and feeling uncertain about my future more and more that I never stopped to think about what could make me live a satisfying life. Luckily we read this book and do this assignment because it made me start to think about what my personal legend in life could be. After thinking for quite a while I decided that my personal legend right now at least would to be as happy as possible throughout the rest of my life and cherish every moment possible, especially with friends and family.
