As The Spindle Turns: First Draft One would like to believe that gender doesn't affect your employment prospects, right? My husband came down on orders to bring us to Benning, it was time to update ye old resume. As a CNC machinist with seven years’ experience, working in both a proprietary production shop as well as a diverse job shop, I'm qualified to set up, tear down, perform program edits and run a variety of equipment. There is, however, one large disadvantage working against me in finding employment here in the lovely state of Georgia; I'm a woman. This is an apparent deal breaker for the shops that I've applied at thus far. It's evident to me, as everything goes very smooth in the application and pre-interview process, until they find out that the "S" in "S. McPherson" stands for Stephani. I more or less fell into this job, prior to then I worked at Universal Studios Orlando as a ride attendant for the Jurassic Park River Adventure. While I loved this job, it didn’t pay enough to make ends meet. I was told of the opening at Brevard by a person that worked there, so I applied. After passing their math test, and then the regular pre-employment checks, urine analysis, back ground check, credit check and the like, I was hired. I spent five years with Brevard Robotics, learning how to operate vertical and horizontal mills along with lathes. Since this was a production shop, I was only an operator as they had machinists that would do the change overs if we needed to swap to a different part. While I learned a lot at Brevard, I wasn’t taught much about code editing, or change overs. This proved to be a hindrance when I followed my then boyfriend, now husband, to Washington
