Coming from a background of a low income family is not an easy situation to be in. It allows me to see things for how they really are. As an individual I find it necessary to be thankful to live with what I was given. This situation made me a more understanding human being who knows the struggles of life by watching how hard my dad works to give his three daughters and his wife a roof to live under. With this in mind, being a Simon Scholar will allow me to grow even more by being the first daughter that goes to college and pursues a magnificent career .I hope to be able to help my family out financially and secure a terrific future. Ever since I was born we were considered a low income family where my mom attends to household needs and my dad is the only one who works. This brings up conflicts in the home in which both my parents burst out into arguments about money. My dad says he can’t afford to pay rent, at times, and tries to find ways out without losing everything he has worked for. As they argued, I thought to myself that maybe I should work to give my family a hand out of this situation. While they were arguing I interrupted them and told them what I thought, my dad grinned and said, “Focus on your education, be someone, create yourself a …show more content…
As well as expanding my knowledge of things, get a better understanding of the computer science world, but most of all give it all my passion to achieve my goals. Through my endeavors I want to make my parents proud of me, be able to give my future family the best as well as my parents. Being A Simon Scholar can impact me greatly by giving me the help I need to achieve my career goals, but most of all help me make my future a success story to share and inspire
My parent’s both have very hard working jobs which have inspired me to work not just hard but to my fullest extent. Money is not the only benefit, but accomplishing my goals and desires are. My mother gets what she can every week cleaning houses in the Redlands, and my father takes two buses, and one train until reaching North Miami six days a workweek. All their sacrifice is for me to have a roof and food at home, this way we can afford our duplex in Homestead. We are a low-income family in Florida who have no other family members but ourselves. Having to adjust to a new community, learning a new culture based on other traditions and an altogether new terminology has been difficult, but overcoming many of these struggles have taught me that one day I will be capable to achieve my ends. I will be helping the community that one day welcomed me, as one of their
Ever since I was a young child, my parents always told me to try my best in school, they always told me this for the reason that they never had the opportunity to have a good job because they never finished school. This event is shaping me to care a lot regarding my education. In addition to that, another event that has shaped me to become the person I am today is that since my parents don’t have good paying jobs they have to work hard to take care of me and my siblings this event has caused me to become a hard working person and to seize all opportunities to live a good life because I don’t want to struggle like my parents.
Not long ago I glance around looking at the people around me in a chilly fragrant small trailer home that smelled of pets with the dog barking and the cat sprinting across the carpet back and forth, I saw how much happier everyone was now compared to when we lived in a big clean house with a warm fireplace. That day I realized that it all comes down to the company you keep. You could live in a mansion and be miserable if the people who are there with you are toxic to the same extent you could live in a tent surrounded by friends and be as happy as a clam. We had just been kicked out of the house due to a divorce; thankfully we were prepared for it and made arraignments to stay with family. It is almost shocking the complete lack of stress
My parents have made decisions that have affected me and my brother. My dad is a very independent man. My father was born into a wealthy family, my grandpa being a doctor. I do not consider my dad to be a self-reliant person, the reason being is because he was negatively influenced by his peers growing up. My father dropped out of high school and began to work at the mere age of 16. Until this day my father is still working the same job and he absolutely hates it. He tells my brother and I to follow our dreams and pursue an education that he could have had. His life decision has influenced my brother and me in a positive way. My brother and I see his childhood as a path that we should avoid, we find his life story motivating because we want to pursue an education and be someone in this
As I open the “Staff and Volunteer Only” door in the back of the East Bay SPCA animal shelter, I slip on my black apron stained from a year’s use and walk briskly through the back hallways with bright blue tennis shoes squeaking. Friendly hellos are exchanged as I pass familiar faces all wearing their blue staff shirts. After adjusting my nametag and grabbing a set of keys attached to a red dog chew toy, I head to the kitchen to prepare food. As I measure out the kibble and pour it into practical tin bowls, yips, barks, and whines echo the halls. The clattering of my keys at the kennel door usually has the dog inside alert and jumping of joy. However, as I open this particular door, holding a specially prepared meal, the dog lying on her
Throughout the course of this project, I was pleased to see where I stand financially in my current situation. Completing the calculators allowed me a clear idea of what I would need to consider through my life to secure a promising financial future. It was satisfying to see that my field of study will provide me with a great salary. This will allow me the opportunity to live in Coconut Creek, Florida because of its affordability with my expected salary. The calculators also provided insight on the different costs and fees that go into buying a home. What was most surprising to me was the data that Neighborhoodscout provided about the percentage of owners vs. renters in the area. Most people pay rent to landlords which brings me to believe
I was born in a large city West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This city made me who I am today. This place is very big many homes, schools, and people live in this city. The part of the city I live in is not the prettiest looking area, but it is home to me. Wake up every day to look outside to see how many kids outside player basketball at the courts across from my house or walking to the corner to see who at the playground; also going to the front door to see the abandoned house with lots of raccoons, squires, cats and birds coming in and out the empty windows during the day. Therefore, looking up the block you can see a single parent with many children on the porch because they have no electricity, they are making so much noise, however, their neighbors are arguing with them because they will not be quiet. It really early in the morning. Walking down the street you can see many drug dealers doing illegal activities like selling drugs and smoke marijuana, and so much other smelly things they are smoking. You smell and see dirty houses because homeless man are staying in the vacated house or empty lot with their creation of a home like a lot sheets, a shopping cart filled with lots of dirty junk and dirty and smelly clothes. A trash can by
I come from an unfortunately disadvantaged background. I grew up in an unstable single parent home, often moving around and missing a lot of school. I have seen drug and alcohol abuse as well as a large amount of death for a nineteen year old. This is not said in an attempt for sympathy, but to explain my unique understanding of the world. I have met many different people, people who have succumbed to their addictions and their circumstances, but also people who have risen above all of the things that worked to keep them down. I have met people from every major ethnic group in the southern United States, including undocumented citizens and DACA recipients. All of these people have contributed a small puzzle piece to create the person that I
To start with, I believe students learn best when they are motivated. Being awarded this scholarship would make a big difference in my life knowing that I am one-step in changing a students life. Becoming a special education takes skill, knowledge, and patience, but at the end, I know hard-work will pays off. With this scholarship, I will take pride and strive towards
Earlier this year my aunt was left without a home. Having little money to buy a home, she had to settle for buying a small plot of land. She needed help cleaning up the plot of land, however, I could not help her because she lives in Colombia. I created a digital poster with details about a clean-up day and clean-up supplies needed. I sent it in a family group message, this was scary to me because I thought I would be judged for asking people to clean up while I wasn’t going to. The responses I received were completely the opposite of that. My family believed my idea was great and was excited get involved. Soon, I started receiving pictures of at least 20 family members cleaning up the land. After this amazing turn-out, I knew it was possible
On the wood floors of a petite brick house, I was Southern Indiana raised. I have moved five times, but that house undoubtedly built me. It carries lessons and hardships with loved ones that shaped my life.
Rob and Melanie talked all the way to the restaurant. Melanie confessed “I can’t help but be nervous, it’s not every day I’m allowed to share dinner with my grandfather. I believe he is a good person, I can just feel it. Did you feel it too? Or is it wishful thinking?”
Every month, my father goes on Mexico mission trips to provide free dental service to the impoverished. Every few weeks, my mother makes food to give to the neighborhood. Every Christmas, my family donates the money we would have used on gifts for each other to the underprivileged in our community. From an early age, I was always taught to be generous and compassionate, but I never really understood the impact of it until I heard of motel children. These children lived five miles from my home in different motels every week because their parents could not afford to rent or buy homes. My heart sank, and I knew this was my opportunity to apply my parents’ teachings.
Born in 1996 made me a nineties baby. I wasn’t the only nineties baby in the family. My brother Daniel came along two years later, and my sister Deanna three years after. My parents were both in their early thirties when they had me, and were a young and out going couple. My dad had recently graduated from seminary and became a youth pastor. My parents raised the family in a Christian household, which should be much of a surprise to hear that my parents are conservative Republicans. The Trucksess family is primarily German and Irish. Historically, the Trucksess name was German, and was most common on the East coast around New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Both sides of my family had a poor history with smoking and alcohol. God was able to bless
As I entered my teen years, my father expected more out of me than just being a good student. Dad always seemed to have projects going on around the house, and I became his helper. It did not matter what the project was, he always seemed to need my help and I was not happy about that. I had better things to do than wasting a weekend working around the house. Somehow my dad knew how to do everything and felt it was his job to teach all of it to me. I was a teenager and had all of the knowledge I would ever need, so I thought. As it turned out, most of the skills I obtained helping my father led me to a rather lucrative career in manufacturing a few years later.
